And I don't understand what you mean by "checking for updates". What is there to check? The console should do all of that automatically and in the background as the Switch does....

The Switch seems to automatically update only recently used software. Everything else is ignored and needs to be updated manually. Haven't played a game in a month or more? It gets forgotten as far as automatic updates are concerned, which is quite annoying as I feel I need to periodically check my software one by one to make sure that they are all up to date.

Oh hey I see the all software menu now. Turns out Hyrule Warriors unlocked it.

It's nice seeing more than 4 icons at once. I like it.

@JayJ I entirely agree. I am holding out vague hope, that Nintendo is planning a major overhaul of the UI/OS when the paid online service launches and there is more to that service that has been announced yet.

But it really is baffling to not have such basic functions as folders and the option to organize by alphabet or most recent or purchase order etc... Even more so when the last 2 Nintendo systems DID have that feature. At least they had folders.

@Heavyarms55 Yeah, and lame explanations for why it takes so long based upon previous generations simply comes off as a bad excuse. Do we really need everything in the next generation to take years to catch up to the previous generation? Shouldn't they just implement that advancement into their next gen UI? Why is it that we need to hold on to this bogus rule of folders needing to take years just because that is the way it was in the past?

I mean... what else do people can say?

What else can we do except being patient?

@skywake what about things voice chat, being able to send messages to friends, moving save data to an SD card and being able to have more icons on screen at once. Nintendo even included the ability to gift games to friends through the Wii shop. Nintendo don't even have to add the messaging system to the UI, they could do similar to the 3DS and have version of doodle instead that can be downloaded. These are things I'm thinking of that the Switch could've easily had from day one. I doubt these would slow down the UI all that much.
I could include a camera which the 3DS and WiiU have, but I don't really see this as a necessity. Although some people would've been happy with it. The Wii could also run video clips and display photos from a standard SD card, again, not necessary but was something the Wii could do.

Why do libraries and book shops sort their books by alphabetical order (to the authors name)?

Because I don't have to find games on your Switch I just have to find them on mine. And frankly sorting by "last accessed" makes content you personally access far easier to find. Stop and think about it for a second. If you really did have 100s of games and downloaded a game on your Switch right now where would it be? The first game in the list right? If it was sorted alphabetically it likely wouldn't be, you'd have to search through the list to find it. By definition it would be harder to find.

I have always kept my books, music and games in alphabetical order

I don't. My collections are only ever really sorted in two kinds of ways. If I don't have many it's a stack with the last accessed content going to the top of the stack after use. Pretty much the same as what the Switch does. For a collection of 10-20 it's IMO the most intuitive way to sort a personal collection of things.

If the collection gets larger I group by genre/style then by artist/series and then sort the artist/series chronologically. And I think you'll find that a lot of stores and libraries will actually do something similar. Admittedly with a more rigid structure but if you walk into a large store that sells movies there is a fair chance they won't have Inglourious Basterds next to Ice Age.

Really, if you’re still somehow struggling to understand why sorting things out alphabetically isn't always the best way to sort? I really don’t know what else there is to say to you.

One significant improvement they could do is remove games that are on cartridge since you can't play them unless you change cart.

[insert smug comment about physical games you can just put in and have the icon moved to the front without having to search for it]

In all seriousness, folders are the bare minimum. There's no excuse when the previous systems had them.

Let's all write every day to Nintendo and ask for folders until we get them.
