Topic: Nintendo IPs that would work on a mobile phone.

After the lackluster reveal of Miitomo, I would like to create a positive thread about future franchises on smartphones.

Anything that is a TBS could work fine on mobile. So Fire emblem and advance wars could work fine with changed controls.

Mario vs Donkey Kong are essentially Rube Goldberg machines. The later ones could be almost directly ported, since they only need touch controls.

An Animal crossing spin-off. I think the theme could potentially attract quite a lot of people. have it be an persistent multiplayer world with many social aspects and it could potentially be a huge hit.

Warioware could certainly work, of course, it needs to be totally adapted to the smartphone. They would have things like microphone, touchscreen, gps and camera to play around with.

So what are your ideas for smartphone games?

Lackluster?

I've got a feeling that people will complain regardless of what Nintendo announces. If it's a Mario game, people will complain that Nintendo only focusses on Mario. If it's Metroid, people will complain why it isn't on a console and if it's Fire Emblem, people will call it a bad market strategy because it's a niche game. Don't expect an endless Mario runner, because we're not going to get that.

And let's just wait until we have more information on Miitomo and see how well Miitomo does before we're going to write it off.

That could work. It is also a theme that many can relate to.

What I initially thought was that they would be games that play nothing like their console versions with the IP being more of a heavy influence. I thought it would be something we haven't really seen before, although some parts of the idea are grounded in similar mobile games. Like a Pikmin game that takes elements from Fallout: Shelter and Clash of Clans. Or maybe an F-Zero game with a focus on getting parts and building your ship (and racing of course). Games that have a long 'grind' to them like current smart phones games, but are constantly adding content. It's inevitable they do a Mario game, but I'm thinking it will be the same approach as Puzzles and Dragon Mario.

I feel there is a very good chance some of these games will be IP's whose gameplay can be converted to mobile seamlessly. This would be games like Rhythm Heaven, Brain Age, and Nintendogs.

Currently Playing: SMITE, ROTTR, Halo 5: Guardians (XB1), Xenoblade Chronicles X (WiiU), Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 2 (3DS)

I can see Nintendo making a mainstream Animal Crossing for mobile (as well as for 3DS, Wii U, and/or NX to cough prevent the complaints). Animal Crossing is pretty popular in Japan and the controls are pretty simple, plus it is a game where you can pick up and play for a few minutes at a time.

Warioware: The idea of Wario being greedy on a phone would be priceless. Eat your hearts out investors

@Therad: Actually, I tend to disagree that Fire Emblem and Advance Wars will fit in the mobile....and there are three reasons why.

1. I'm playing final fantasy tactics and the controls for selecting units and performing basic functions are horrible!. The reason is that mobiles have capacitive screens which respond even with the tiniest touch. For TRPG's, that's simply annoying to get used to. Trust me, you will often get frustrated simply doing basic things like selecting.

2. Even then, the idea itself is risky because let's all face it, Fire Emblem and Advance Wars aren't really that HUGE for Nintendo especially considering the fact that they are made by Intelligent Systems.

3.The potential microtransactions that these IP's could have will damage the brands themselves let alone the community. i.e, in FE, you can't get your deceased units once they die and resetting is also not possible to do...... that is, unless you're willing to spend real money to get them back?

I don't think Nintendo would put valuable IP's to the phone as they would rather put something that makes sense for phones. I don't see how F-Zero, Metroid or even Star Fox will be there on phones.

I think that the game and watch series can easily work on the phone because those games don't do much.

I agree with Lz, WarioWare would be perfect for mobile. I just got into the series a few weeks ago, when I picked up MegaMicrogame$ on a whim. now i'm hooked, and I already have Touched and DIY. But anyway, back to mobile. I was playing MegaMicrogame$ when I realized something, WarioWare was a mobile game before mobile as a platform even existed. If you don't know what I mean, well just think about it. The reason (most) people play mobil games, is because they have like five minutes and just want to play a quick little game. WarioWare has that, its v=basically the entire premise actually. Plus, after you beat the main "story", the game pretty much turns into a score chaser, which make up a very substantial amount of the mobile market. basically what I'm saying, in waaaay more words than it should have taken, is that WarioWare would be perfect for mobile.

@DarthNocturnal:

  • Umm.....don't expect Nintendo to use fake d-pads and whatnot because they know that having that sort of thing takes a LOT of space and considering how they made use of the DS and 3DS dual screen gaming, yeah....putting too many things on one screen to optimize it on phone isn't a smart move. Sure, you don't need quick reflexes, but you DO need the convenience to have precise controls to make selections easier unlike how its done in tactics....something which im very doubtful that Nintendo can easily do it because they have to make the sprites for the characters like 90X75 and the whole map like small enough that you don't need to scroll down. Because scrolling can be a HUGE problem when doing on touch screen.
  • Intelligent Systems is the one responsible for FE and Wars. Its not easy to give that same experience on mobile when it technically is inferior than a console system.
  • IAP is the most traditional way to enter in the mobile market. Even the company that I work with is doing it. Thing is, because mobile is not that expensive to make and since there are like what a million games in mobile already....really the IAP is the best way to do it. Tell me one game that's a fully paid game and that its reached a million downloads. Really not possible to do.
  • If it really is silly for them to not use their valuable IP, then why is their first mobile game Miitomo? Mii is basically player's avatar so why even have that basic thing to begin with? For all we know, they might use that instead of making use of other IP because the possibilities of Mii are endless and this is a better way of using games on mobile for them.

From the looks of it, it doesn't seem like Nintendo will want to make engaging games on mobile but rather something that makes sense for mobile like Miitomo.

Just some thoughts,

I get really irked when people talk about the disadvantages of trying to play games on a phone (specifically the fact that the restrictive real estate makes/would make certain kinds games more difficult to play). Now, it's not that I necessarily disagree with that, it's just that "mobile" also encompasses TABLETS, which have much more real estate, and from my personal experience, makes a big difference. (it just irks me when people talk as if mobile = phone, when that's not true)

Continuing on, though they're not as widespread as phones, I'm sure most people have access to a tablet (most people I know either have one for every member of the family, or one the family shares), and though I have no statistics to back this up, I imagine most people wanting to play a more traditional game on mobile would be doing so on a tablet rather than a phone, if they had the option (certainly anyone that considers themselves a serious mobile gamer?).

Not that the games wouldn't be playable on phones if that's all you had, but I would imagine they would go into development of more traditional games considering tablets as the "lead platform" (for the best experience) so to speak (and yes, while apps are playable on a multitude of devices, many times it will be noted that they were either developed for best experience on tablets, or phones).

If I can play Xcom on my phone using the touchscreen then I can easily play Fire Emblem or Advance Wars on my phone too. Touchscreen controls have already been used for both series so it isn't too much of.a stretch to see them on mobile, just tweaked slightly to make it more user-friendly using only touch controls.

It'd also be nice to see a new Advance Wars. The mobile audience may just be the right audience for the series now.

Yes, I like bears.

My immediate thoughts:

  • Freakyforms (anyone remember that? No? OK then)
  • FE/Advance Wars
  • WarioWare (Twisted would be PERFECT)
  • Duck Hunt? idk

@GrizzlyArctos: exactly. Or if anyone wants to try out a concept that could work, download great little war game. The demo is free and it has pretty good controls.

For mobile games the best ones are tilt, tap or turn based. Trying to do anything too complicated just messes things up. So things like puzzle games could work well and as others have mentioned games like Advance Wars. I could also see it being pretty easy to move games like Rhythm Heaven and Warioware across.

No no no, no Advance Wars on mobile phones, please. It can get too complicated for the simplicity of mobile games. I think the Advance Wars series belongs to Nintendo handhelds (although I'd like to see one with a new art style on Nintendo's home consoles).
I'd say Nintendogs or the StreetPass games are excellent for mobile gaming. They're very simple; plus, Nintendogs would be an instant hit on mobile, IMO.
