Don't get me wrong, I'm new to this forum and website, and of course, found my way here because I am quite possibly a grade-a nintendo fan boy, and can guarantee to all of you that I will buy Super Mario 3d Land and Mario Kart on day one, but recently, I've just been so incredibly worried about nintendo's future.
Being the nintendo fan-boy that I am, I've been perusing the internet, studying all information relating the 3ds, wii u, and even wii for that matter. And I've been coming across a lot of negativity, especially towards nintendo's future. And unfortunately, some of the nintendo bashing on the 3ds (which I fully support) and the wii u (which I simply am ecstatic for) seem sadly true in a way. I'm starting to feel like maybe this IS infact the end of nintendo.
Before anyone rushes into calming my fears, I'd just like to mention that nintendo's stock at the moment is just god awful. after the wii u caused a 5% drop in stocks, I decided it would be a good idea to buy stock now while the company had a lil' stock booboo. Unfortunately, I've been seeing no signs of any recovery, and no signs at all that nintendo is doing anything to make their stock situation better.
I bought my stock at 25.1 a month ago. Now it's at 19.45. That's a huge decrease for a month.
Once again, I'm not coming here to make fun of nintendo, or nintendo fans, or simply spout nintendo deserves to fail. Rather, I'm just feeling worried for nintendo. Having been a life-long nintendo fan, I can't help but feel the beginning of the end. I read an article that seems to succinctly state why nintendo may fail some time in the distant future.

Of course, I can't stress enough just how much I hope I'm wrong about nintendo's future. I wouldn't want to live on a planet without nintendo..

Let's face it, you don't knock the price of your brand new game system by 1/3 within 5 months of its release if things haven't gone off the tracks a bit. But after seeing the many wonderful 3DS games at E3, and coupled with this price drop, perhaps that will be enough to inject some new life into the 3DS system. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried a bit, but it's not time to panic just yet. As I said, these 3DS first party games alone are worth the price of the system at $250, so getting the system now for $170 makes it even better.

If Nintendo could pull out of the disaster that was the Virtual Boy then they sure can come out of this.

I also think is still early to forecast Nintendo's end, but I cant say the idea hasnt passed thru my mind with unprecedented early price cut and stock decrease, 3rd party releases delayed or even canceled, and WiiU's epic fail IMO (You cant even hope to have a creative image and target a different audience if you are sticking to the previous branding, and WiiU=PS3x1.5 when a graphically competitive next gen console should WiiU>PS3x2, also 2012 is premature for next gen)

Im not worried Nintendo always manages to magically get profit of this kind of mess, and if they dont I have loads of past Nintendo games to buy and play for my entire lifespan, and as the article in your post mention I can see Nintendo teaming up with another company in the future with success. But I wouldnt ever buy Nintendo software for Sony/MS hardware.

EDIT: Think about it 2009 DSi, 2010 DSiXL, 2011 3DS... 2012 WiiU? NOA you have milked to much and repeteadly your core fans on harware, so its likely WiiU wont count with many of them, and its also likely another factor of poor 3DS sales

If it came down to it and buying Nintendo first-party games on a Sony or Microsoft console was the only way I could play them, you bet your a** I'd buy them on those consoles. LOL

Nintendo's not going to just disappear. Perhaps it'll be acquired since it's becoming more and more difficult for a company to specialise in the modern consumer IT environment.

But that doesn't mean it has "demised." In fact, I think the very best thing for Nintendo would be if it was acquired by someone like Apple.

I'd wait and see how they do for the end of the year now there's not only Mario Kart and Mario (obvious system sellers) but also a huge price cut. Fanboys like us were sold from the start with the idea but even I must admit it's been pretty dull for the year so far. There was Pokemon Black on the DS and Okamiden (which I didn't end up getting) but there hasn't been anything for the 3DS aside from OoT and the Wii has been even worse!

........ but it looks like it's going to turn around really quickly and I'd be surprised if the 3DS doesn't end up being a bigger "must have" Christmas item than the Vita. I don't see Apple's products as competitors who can take them out (buttons!!!) even though I've almost been spending more time playing small games on that than my shiny new 3DS.

Oh come on. Nintendo's future is not in jeopardy. They have made a crapload of money with the Wii and the DS. Sure now it's going bad. They have launched a new handheld and it doesn't sell as well as they hoped. But I think that's good for Nintendo. They've got noone to blame but themselves. Because now they see that they can't expect to throw a system out there at that price point with a pretty lousy launch line up and no games coming out after it. I think we can say they've rushed the system. Let's hope they learned from their mistakes when they launch the WiiU.

I remember reading "If Nintendo stops making systems, we stop making games."

It's both good and bad. It's good, because that way, Microsoft won't be able to purchase Nintendo- as Bill Gates said "Once they put themselves up for sale, I'll be the first to throw in the money." and taint the image of Nintendo just as they did with Rare (be strict with Rare as Nintendo was and maybe we'll see them bring out amazing games as they used to).

It's bad, because we won't get to play any new Zelda, Mario, Kirby, etc. and things won't be right if Nintendo isn't around providing the fun games they've been making for years.

But that's just a rumor. I don't doubt that's what was said, however.

That's complete tripe, too. Marketing speak, or bravado, or whatever you want to call it.in the real business world, things aren't that cut-and-dry, and if the time comes right, you bet Nintendo will look to be acquired.

It's also not a bad thing. People always assume acquisition means the death of a company. But then that just shows how few people understand how business works.

Nintendo will survive at the end of the day, but I think the casual audiences' wind in Nintendo's sails from the 2006-2010 era is waning.

I think you summed up my thoughts as well. This is all a bit troubling, yes, but it's not the end of the company as we know it. They went from leading-sales giant to tanking failure practically overnight, and they're scrambling. I think the 3DS will sell just find if they really push the marketing and keep a steady stream of quality releases coming. The Wii U, on the other hand, has a lot to prove, and could really end up hurting the company if they don't play their cards just right.

Didn't the N64 and GameCube see 25% cuts less than 6 months after their release? Nintendo's still here. :3

Well actually they are doing pretty fine with sales they just want more people to purchase the 3ds during the holiday season. They are also down because people are skeptical of wii u Which they shouldn't be. I don't think Nintendo has done the greatest with the 3ds so far but they will do fine. However you can't just blame Nintendo, 3rd party publishers have not been trying to make good games on the system which could have boasted sales.
