Just wondering, how many songs/albums we've all got in our digital music libraries. And where do you usually get them from (e.g. iTunes Music Store, rip from original CDs, other sharing sites, etc.)?
I've got a little more than 16,000 songs, all ripped from original CDs that I either owned or borrowed. I don't download any songs from the music stores because they're not lossless quality.
Also, I recently got a reminder to back up my stuff. I had a hard drive fail on me, but luckily I routinely do complete backups. If I'd lost all those songs, all that work, I would've been devasted. Never mind all the pictures and business stuff. <shudders> Back up your files!
I use iTunes and I've got 19,489 songs currently. Most have been burned from my original CDs, but I do buy a lot of songs from iTunes as well. And I always back them up.
In my digital music library? I have about 1,000 different songs. I'd only 200 or so were bought online (usually as cheap trials to different services), with the rest ripped from my CD collection.

I didn't think you needed to back up music from iTunes (at the threat of losing them), because your purchases are recorded and you can just download them again.
I myself have just 475 songs (by Posts #1, #2 and #3), comprising of CD albums (Simpsons and Weird Al are the majority), Podcasts (which aren't included in the list), cartoon/tv themes i've recorded from youtube or acquired online, Videogame tracks (i've acquired online that i've recorded through Winamp and it's VG plugins) and of course iTunes purchases - about 91 so far (plus 1 live version of "One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn faces" I downloaded by accident - I deleted that). Spread over 152 albums or 186 different artists.
About 6000 tunes on itunes but there's probably another 3000 on CD's that I haven't put on yet (another job on an already long list ) Most are from CD's owned or borrowed some are from ahem other sources and some were free downloads (like The Jaydiohead Album,Check it out Jay Z mixed with radiohead it's excellent). I love music
@edhe, I believe if you purchase something from the iTunes Music Store, you can download it again, yes... but that's a bit if a hassle if you have thousands of songs to restore. And if you're like me and Corbie who ripped all/most of our many songs by hand, then a loss would be just crushing.
Fox, iTunes is really excellent for organizing and playback. But damn... not being able to re-download your purchases from the store (if you use it) is just terrible.
I agree, but iTunes works well with my Macbook and my iPod Touch, so I tend to stick with it. I just make sure my music is always back up on my Time Capsule.
I have redownloaded from iTunes before (I think). I have only used it maybe five times, and this was long ago, but last I checked you could redownload a set number of times in case you lose files. But in general, I think iTunes and similar programs are ripoffs. I'd rather buy the CDs and get the best quality possible without the hassle of DRM.
I've got about 30 cd's from back when I listened to metal, but now I pay 50€ a year to subscribe to di.fm where I listen to all of my trance usually.

I wish I remembered, Corbie, but it was at the very least a year ago. Maybe I imagined this. I don't even have iTunes anymore, so I wouldn't begin to know what to tell you. Sorry.
I contacted Apple support and they basically told me that I would have to re-download the songs. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being cheated. But searched every menu in the program trying to find out how to do it. I finally just gave up and bought them again.
Got about 16000 I think... All of them are lossy mp3s (in fact, whenever I get a flac file, the first thing I do is convert it to mp3) and all downloaded through P2P. I do carefully maintain it though, check every file I get to ensure which version it is and label it if it's not already. Can't really use things like iTunes or Spotify since those things doesn't carry the most of the music I listen to anyway. Oh, how I wish for a commercial Audiogalaxy... Of course, I do have quite a few retail CDs aswell (about 100 maybe), but apart from an Oceanlab CD, I never use them anymore...
I couldn't give a number, but I'm up to about 80gigs worth of music having recently edited some dross. Some ripped, some bought, some free stuff both legal and not. I won't go near anything Apple, I don't like them and refuse to follow the flock. Got a Walkman phone with a big memory card instead and I love it. I back everything up as 3 years ago I lost about 30gigs worth of carefully collected tunes, not only did it hurt, but it was a nightmare getting it all back on the computer. Also, I've gone off CD's as they will eventually go the way of VHS and I don't want to end up with a mass of something I'll never use. Plus, I am denying myself material gratification, as I woke up one day and realised how shallow it is. I used to be addicted to buying CD's, DVD's, boxset's blah blah blah and am proud of myself for breaking out that loop, and 'letting go'.
Right now I'm listening to LTJ Bukem: Some Blue Notes Of Drum 'N Bass, perfect for a Sunday morning.
