A bunch of hogwash I believe. This whole Mayan calender thing got blown out of proportion, and some have taken it to the extreme. I can't wait till we get past this date, and it's finally over with.
As for why, some people are just gullible.

If you're talking about this particular theory (the Mayan thingy), we're talking about it because it's funny (and a bit sad) some people actually believe in it.
If you're talking about why people try to find these things out in general, it's just human nature to try and figure things out, predict what's going to happen in the future.
