It kills me when people say this. If you can't see a difference you might need glasses. I'm not just talking games but TV and movies as well.

I already have glasses thank you very much. Even with them, I still can't really see a difference.

Anyways, while don't agree with TendoBoy on a lot of things, and I mean A LOT of things, I do agree that this whole HD business is rather confusing and unnecessary, at least as far as I care to be concerned with. Sure they look a bit better, but they look almost as good on an SD TV, so what's the point? I still think it's all market bologna, and I ain't fallin' for it.

I'd rather watch a movie.

And that's another thing. Games are becoming more cinematic with each new generation. It's like we're playing interactive movies now. What happened to games just being games: Fun little diversions from everyday life.

And that's another thing that's completely throwing me off. Uncharted is the perfect example among many others.
I'll take an 8-bit Mega Man 11 ANYDAY over any brand spakin new grade A PS3 title. Mega Man doesn't need massive Michael Bay explosions, an incredibly rich plot, with tons of fantastic acting and voice actors ect ect.

I really do miss the simplicity and the facy that games were just games back in the NES days. But at the same time i'm all for Story driven and character experiences like Resident Evil which is just one example. Nintendo has kept Mario practically the same as it has always been which is a good thing. Having voice acting, a rich story and the like just isn't Mario.

Cinematic games are nice, but that just makes them more like interactive movies. I want a game where I can just enjoy how it PLAYS, not just how it looks. Uncharted has awful controls, but I admit I enjoy it because of the story, acting, character interaction, and graphics. But those things are not what makes a video game. They are secondary to the one thing that's important: Gameplay.

Games from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras didn't need to be cinematic and realistic to be fun. The whole shift to 3D has changed the way this industry operates. It's like there's this need to constantly raise the bar even higher with each new generation of consoles. There's a reason why those old games are still enjoyable to this day, because they were simple to play, and they were FUN.

I'm sick of having to pay $300+ for a new console just so I can play the same games with better graphics. I want something new, something I've never played before. Nintendo (and to a certain extent, Microsoft) understand this, and that's why the Wii is one of my favorite consoles this gen. Not because I'm playing Mario and Zelda again, but because the controller offers new gameplay experiences that I haven't seen before (pointing & motion controls).

I finally understand why Miyamoto values gameplay above all else, because without a solid gameplay foundation, the whole game falls apart. It seems many Western developers forgot about that.

And don't get me started on the whole smartphone gaming trend. I don't see how "tap tap, swipe, drag, tap tap" is a fun way to play a game.

I'm highly looking forward to the Wii U, not just for the graphics, but for how the new controller can enhance game design and gameplay. The video's I've seen demonstrating the new controller have me very impressed. And I will be sorely disappointed if Microsoft and Sony just offer the same games with the same dual analog controllers (but dey gots da BETTER GRAPHICS!!! Hurr durr).

I have a question. I've noticed some games opt for tiny HUDs and a distant "camera". Is this an influence of the whole HD thing or just developers thinking everyone has huge TVs?

Stop right there. Just, stop. Stop and think with me for a moment. Just imagine Mega Man 2, you know the game with the blue robot and the pew-pew and the dun-nununa-duhn~nuh and al that. Now imagine that where all the sprites are stickfigures, the backround is chalk-white with some black outlines for the stage, and the music is just a low hum. The intro at the beginning is completely gone. Everything else is the same, though. You still with me? If you can fathom that, please tell me: is it still fun?!

@GundamMac: Actually I have to agree about Uncharted. Though I don't know exactly who agreed with what mechanic, but i'm pretty sure if anyone has to complain about the controls, the chorus is going to be universally about aiming. It just doesn't feel completely satisfying.. Everything else about the game though is perfect.
This is coming from a guy who's opinion sides on mouse aiming to be superior anyway....:X

Why is this always an either-or thing? You can have both, you know .... but I guess Nintendo fans can't understand that because they've never seen anything pretty in their whole lives. :/

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

As long as there's Nintendo and one other video-game company, this argument is always going to be around. Do you prefer unique gameplay or better graphics? And there's never going to be an end to the argument because it's like trying to convince a football fan that baseball is better or a cat person that dogs are better. People like what they like, and that's why it's good that the consoles offer different experiences.

I see your point, but then there's this:

Pac-Man (the original arcade version)
Tetris
Asteroids
Donkey Kong (arcade)

All of these games had very crude graphics and sound, but the gameplay made up for it. Graphics ARE IMPORTANT, yes, but gameplay is the foundation upon which a game is built. Without good gameplay, the game falls apart, even if it looks absolutely amazing.

As for Uncharted, Drake himself controls well, and the running is fun. But the aiming is very cumbersome and he climbs so slowly, always pausing for a second before jumping to a ledge. I know they want it to be realistic, but it's a video game, not real life.

Video games and movies are supposed to suspend your disbelief, take you away from the boringness of reality. And it's another reason why I still enjoy cartoons. Seeing a cartoon character blow up from a stick of dynamite or having an anvil crush his body is more fun than if they were just doing pedestrian (unimaginative) things. It's fun because you KNOW it's pretend.

Would you still play Mario if he was a 5'9 gruff Italian mobster who went after an evil crime lord named Bowser, trying to save his girlfriend from a bunch of lowlife thugs? And his main weapon was a flamethrower instead of a fire flower? And instead of growing big when eating a mushroom, he just started hallucinating? And instead of driving a go kart, he just drove around in a pimped out truck, running over pedestrians who were in his way?

I just described Grand Theft Auto

I've been trying to enjoy most Western-developed games, but they all feel too similar to one another. It's just the same games we played last gen, but with more detailed graphics and "OMG it's in HD!!!!" Not to mention all those developers who do nothing but copy the gameplay from other games, but just put in different characters and settings to make them seem "unique." Killzone, Halo, Resistance, Call of Duty are all pretty much interchangeable in terms of characters and story. Put the characters of Halo in Killzone, put the weapons of Resistance in Call of Duty, tweak the aiming and button mapping a bit. See my point?

I am glad that Nintendo is finally catching up to Sony and Microsoft's graphics standards, but they are ALSO bringing something new-ish. The tablet controller offers much more than just a simple dual-analog controller. It's another window to new gameplay ideas (no pun intended). Motion controls, a screen, microphone, buttons, analog pads, HD graphics... it's like the Wii U controller is the ultimate culmination of Nintendo's 30-year gaming history.

Nintendo was making pretty things before the Xbox or Playstation consoles even existed.

I have to agree with the sentiment that games are becoming more like interactive movies. It was impressive the first time but now you just want more control over the game. It's a good balance between graphics and gameplay that's needed really.

Agreed, and I really really hope that Nintendo doesn't let the awe of HD graphics get to their head with the Wii U. I want them to focus on both gameplay AND graphics equally. A 3D Zelda in HD will look incredible, no doubt, but keep the gameplay foundation that was started with Ocarina of Time.

Super Mario Galaxy looks incredible on an HDTV, yet it still retains that classic hop-n-bop gameplay that we all grew up with, and it adds the extra element of gravity and planetoid exploration.

A good game is a good game, no matter what the gameplay is like. You're kidding yourself if you think the games on HD systems are the same as the previous generation with updated graphics. That's what remakes are for.

The Killzone developers are Dutch. But I guess anything that isn't from glorious Nippon is "Western"

In the gaming industry, the term "Western" refers to anything outside of Japan.

I'm not saying all games are like this, I'm just saying many of them seem to have changed very little. There's not enough innovation, especially with PC games. You guys have been using a mouse and keyboard for over 30 years. Why not try something new? The console industry has evolved and expanded greatly with new types of controllers and gameplay. But PC gamers always seem to stick to the mouse and keyboard, and their endless supply of shooters and RTS games.
