Here's one for you people to whine about: little girls usually prefer barbie dolls while little boys usually prefer Hotwheels cars.

/ontopic/ Out of all the anime I hate (99.999repeating% of anime) OP does not stand among them. OP is the only anime I like.

I can understand you hating most anime as there is a lot of garbage out there (including Naruto Shippuden). Naruto was good before it got milked into the Shippuden (meaning Hurricane Chroncles). Just like Dragon Ball was good before it got milked. However there are some good anime and manga out there. You just have to look for them. Perhaps I'll try and post a list of some you might like when I have more time.

Here are a small amount that I will suggest to you and they are Stan Lee's Ultimo, Lee's Heroman, Clayman, Black Butler, Bizenghast, The Stellar Six, .hack//4koma and maybe Undertown to only name a few.

Eh, thanks for bringing me some shows that you think I might like, but honestly, I hate anime for the kicks.
As in, even if the anime is good, I'm going to hate it just because I choose to hate anime. (this includes fake anime)
In fact, one of the main reasons that I like OP is because I saw the hilariously ridiculous censorship done by 4Kids. My favorite censorship was Sanji's lolipop, followed by the Marines having SuperSoakers instead of real guns. Also, the opening was lol-awesome, along with Sanji's voice.
I had some good memories from that, so I kept watching it in Japanese with English subs. I was sad to see that Sanji had no lolipop.

TokyoRed, on what grounds exactly do you think OnePiece is aimed at children? Nothing Ive seen about it suggests that.

I'm shouldn't even answer you because you obviously didn't read or even comprehend what I wrote earlier on this very page in response to Link-Hero. In Japan One Piece is family entertainment because there ideaology isn't at all like ours here in the USA or the UK. One Piece is aimed at children, teens and young adults. Simply look the ridiculous and even at times childish humor and characters like cute, yea adorable characters like Tony Tony Chopper to understand that.

The general audience of Shonen Jump as a whole is youth. Can you imagine a sixty year old person reading Shonen Jump?

I am seriously confused now. Market analysis puts One Piece tracking best with male demographics of both age groups 10-20 and 20-30. Interpreting those figures, the sweet spot for One Piece is around the 16-24 age bracket. 10 year olds are, realistically, not going to be interested in something that also appeals to a 30 year old. Conversely, 30 year olds are probably at the point where they're growing out of something that would also have a small following amongst 10 year olds. As with any demographic study, the extremes of the age groups are going to be adopters in smaller quantities.

Also, Kawaii character design and humour often has absolutely nothing to do with an anime or manga being aimed at a young generation in Japan. That's a misunderstanding that western people imposted on anime and manga when it started being exported, and was based on the very Disney worldview that cute = kiddy.

In reality Kawaii stuff can be very adult in Japan. From what I've seen, One Piece is an example of that.

Well to be honest most adults that I've talked with have a distain for things like manga, anime and those kinds of things. I guess what we should say is that One Piece would appeal to young adults more so than to adults (age 50+).

I have more many youth (age 10 to 16) who enjoy One Piece versus young adults who enjoy it. Most young adults that I've met from California to Georgia enjoy Naruto and Bleach although the latter more than the former. Anyway, I'm off to catch up on One Piece.

There's no anime version of One Piece here in Finland but instead we get books. And yes, I like One Piece more than any other manga that's coming out in here. At the time I'm writing this I have read all the books once again and it is the best. But I'll have to wait two months until the next book (number 55) comes out

@TokyoRed... For the most part (and this includes One Piece), Mangas aren't made for an American audience at all. Any popularity there is a bonus, and keeps the folks at Viz in a job.

So it doesn't really matter if young Californian adults look down at a manga. One Piece was made for Japanese people, where it is quite ok for adults to like Manga. That's why there are so many adults only manga.

I know this for a fact because I have been to Japan and witnessed it.

So once again, no, One Piece is not made for children or was designed to be family friendly. It has nothing to do with 'standards' that the Japanese original One Piece is laden with swears. It has a everything to do with the fact that it wasn't made for children... Just like American 'standards'.

sorry to burst your bubble, but i refuse to believe that you don't already know what you're getting into when you read something made by another culture entirely from our own. manga is made for the Japanese, no matter how many people across the world enjoy it. they're not writing for some church-going kid who's outraged at seeing women with pierced ears and skirts shorter than knee-length or the six-to-ten-year-old kids he thinks are the core audience for this kind of thing across the world, they're writing for the bored guy riding a train or the high-school kid trying to enjoy his time off from school. they don't give a rat's behind about your personal morals or what you think, so read at your own risk and keep the whining to a minimum, please; it's getting old.

also, i find the ageism here somewhat annoying. who's to say what an individual of fifty or sixty years of age will or won't like? and who's to say that you yourself won't pick up this manga and read it again when you turn that age? I hope you'll be able to imagine someone of that age reading it then, at least.

Thanks WaltzElf. I'd like to ask you guys if any of you are familiar with a game called "Pirate King Online" which isn't at all connected with One Piece but it does seem to have been influenced by One Piece. I've played it and I couldn't help but think about One Piece while playing the game. Have any of you guys played it?

Who is the strange figure that saves Luffy from Captain Smoker in episode 52 of One Piece and volume 12 of the manga?

Could someone PLEASE answer my question about that strange fellow in One Piece? Who is he? Why did Captain Smoker call him Dragon? Is the stranger like Jake Long of Disney's American Dragon: Jake Long?

You called?

Now about Dragon. If someone were to tell you his story, then it would be a huge spoiler.
Also, how far have you gotten in OP? The reason I want to know is so that I can say stuff in here without spoiling anything big.

(By the way, they all die in the end, you never see it coming.)

Okay, thanks. So ya mean they die? Hmm...interesting. Very interesting indeed.

Heh heh heh, nah. I don't know what happens in the end, it's just something that I like to say to people when they don't want to hear spoilers.
Also, Oda said that the story line for OP will take about 20 more years to finish. Yes, twenty years. He apparently has a chain of events written down for what will happen throughout the series, but to write the story for the chain of events will take 20 more years.

I reached episode 90. Tony Tony Chopper is as charming as Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer.

I think you meant 10 more years, since Oda said that the manga has reached it's halfway point late last year. Since the first part lasted 10 years long, then the second part should last at least 10 more years. But either way, I don't want One Piece to end anytime soon.
