Regarding private messaging I think it would be a good idea, although wouldn't it make this more like a social networking site? Is that undesirable? I don't know.

I'm not sure I completely follow the "social networking" thing, given that Private Messaging is a feature on pretty much every forum I have ever seen other than this one. It's not something I really care about, just wondering really. I doubt I would use it very often if at all, personally, though I'm sure some would.
