Well done Nintendo.
You sure do love your customers and love screwing them over.

Just when my niece bought a DSi for her birthday a week ago and then you announce this crap?
Come on...

Its Official.
I'm not buying any Nintendo hand helds because a week later,a new one comes out. screw it.

It will propably take over a year before this new console is released.

Just because a new system comes out doesn't mean you have to buy it or that the old games are obsolete, this is especially true in handheld gaming (GameBoy Color lasted quite a long time when the GBA was out). I didn't get an N64 for quite a while and enjoyed some great SNES games for a good price. If Nintendo brings out a new console it's an option for you to upgrade or for others to get in, you are under no feudal obligation to keep up your dues to Nintendo. In any case, the DSi was clearly not an entirely new system, but rather one for those with the money or desire to keep up-to-date, or those without a DS. Of course, this new system will also be backwards compatible.

it's not like we didn't know something new was coming down the pipes eventually. If you always wait for the next big thing instead of enjoying what's out now, you'll never get to play anything. I'm sure your niece will be very happy with her DSi, Sean007s, as the promise of a new handheld next year (if not sometime later) wouldn't have flown as far as a DSi for a birthday present here and now.

Why do people keep whining "Whaaaa, they just came out with the DSi XL?" It's the same as a regular DSi! It's just for a niche (mostly older market) who prefer bigger screens. Why would you buy it if you already had a DSi (unless you're a collector, but they're probably happy about this with the rest of us)? It's not like it's a whole new iteration. Just like the DSLite was EXACTLY the same as the DSPhat, just smaller.

DSi will have been out for at least 2 years if this comes out early 2011. You always have the option of selling your DSi or trading it in to help pay for the new system (c'mon DSiWare transfers). It's not like the successor hasn't been pretty much confirmed for a couple months now too (dev kits sent out...etc.). It'll be backwards compatible, so all your DS game purchases will still be relevant.

Or, you could wait a while before you get it. The DS has a huge library of games to be enjoyed. If you're just now getting a DSi (or a DS), I'd have to guess that getting new consoles day one is probably not a huge priority for you anyways.

Yeah, this isn't reason to hate on Nintendo. I just happily bought my wife a DS Lite a few months ago, it's exactly what she wanted and came dirt cheap. That's the positive of multiple skus: The people that want the newest stufs will be fed, and those that don't need/want the newest tech can get a good experience on the cheap.

I'll probably STILL get the XL because of the larger screen. It's not like this 3DS is coming out tomorrow, anyways. It will be at least a year + the expected delays. The IPhone has the same strategy, and it works too. Multiple skus = multiple options.

Then again, I'm still expecting this to be some kind of April Fools joke. It doesn't seem very "Nintendo-ish" to release this info like this, without all the bells and whistles.

@Machu I feel that the name doesn't have the potential to grow at all. The name makes it sound like that you're buying the same piece of hardware but with a new feature. I know it's a personal thing, but it just makes me angry that a company that was originally a success because of their originality can't name their new console something clever. Yet again, personal thing, but it just makes me want to punch Nintendo IN THE FACE!!! (Over-dramatic-ness is over-dramatic. )

So, carrying over from my locked thread:

  • We're still over a month out from E3, so the hype train will have died down a bit by then.
  • The XL is about to launch and this is sure to dampen it's sales.
  • Nintendo has always aimed to make BIG announcements with presentations.

So why did we get this news today? And, more importantly, what, if anything, prompted (or forced) them to announce this new console like this?

Boom.

Sure, the hype will die down on the road to E3, but just you watch - a week or two before the conference things'll go utterly mad again.

The XL mainly caters for the more mature gamer, who won't care for the 3DS at this point in time. Sure, a few preorders will have been cancelled already and a few sales lost, but I don't think it'll affect the XL too badly at all.

This is no different to how they decided to run with Wii MotionPlus. They announced the accessory before E3 then used to conference to display it and the software it was to be used with. This year's presentation will still be huge - regarding 3DS, we'll learn more about the hardware, maybe prices and dates (though it's too early for that, I reckon) and, most importantly, software. And then there's Zelda on Wii. And then there'll be other things we have no idea about.

You've already answered this one yourself. Hype train. People expected a new DS to be shown off at E3. Nintendo have preempted that and surprised the hell out of everyone.

Sean007s

I guess its ok if its released next year ...

Although I bet the Japanese release will be late fall or early winter.
Oh well...

I wish I had a DS but I'm more of a Console gamer.
Once I get money,I'll buy a DS and some games.

Good god...so many amazing games for it...

Good points, but you don't think that this could be a sign that other competitors are pushing Nintendo to show their hand?
I think all the shouting that Reggie has done about the competition recently paired with this style of releasing info could be a sign that the company is a little nervous.

Boom.

Kid_A

I'll have to see it to believe it. I have a feeling that their definition of 3D isn't the same as mine (like when the metroid developer guy--whose name escapes me--called the lastest Metroid game 'on-rails'.)

Nintendo has always stayed one step ahead of Microsoft and particularly Sony (at least, since the DS was first announced way back when). Sony has just announced Move and Microsoft is gearing up for Natal. I think now that Nintendo realises that their competitors are almost up to their level in terms of innovation (even if only by copying in Sony's case), it's time to play smartypants again and step it up another notch.

I don't think Nintendo are nervous about anything, I simply think that, now all three of them have console motion technology, they've decided that now is once again the time to prove that they are the innovators in this industry.

$$$ hype $$$$ hype $$$$$

This all depends on the innards. Rumor is that it will be as powerful as the GCN, but I'll believe it when I see it. If it's just as or less powerful than the current PSP, it's essentially outdated tech with a 3-D, motion sensing gimmick. That would suck. However, I highly doubt Nintendo will cut corners with the graphics for this 3DS with the PSP-2 and Apple's iPad looming.

Glad to see Nintendo continuing to innovate; I'm excited to see what they can pull off with the new DS. Didn't Iwata say that it would have motion controls as well? 3D and motion controls, thats just insane.

That said, unless they really impress me at E3, I will be sticking with my old DS phat.

"Backward compatible with DS and DSi games." doesn't this make the dsi pointless?
