Hey all. I am asking for a 3DS for christmas and was wondering about also getting screen protectors. I never have had them for my ds lite or dsi, but I have heard some people being very satisfied with ones for their 3DS. What do you think? I'd like to hear both sides please! Thanks a lot.

Screen Protectors are unnecessary and look awful on your console in my opinion. Still, Hori made some ones that make the application easier. I bet you ca find it on Amazon pretty cheap.

They are nessesary if you don't want your screen ruined.

I never used them and I do think their unnecessary. But If you have like a little kid you have to share it with then I kinda would think its necessary.

Im a big fan of Mario games :)

got one for free at launch but it was a pain to get it properly on the screen so i throw it away and im fine without such thing.

Not necessary. As long as you dont bang the stylus on the touch screen or use anything else but the stylus and use a soft cloth to clean the screen you should be fine. Also you can use a soft cloth when you close your 3DS to keep it scratch free as well.

The new Hori protectors are MUCH easier to apply. For a small price, they keep your screens from getting scratched. It seems like a no-brainer to me.

kind of depends on your stylus, if they scratch screens get them and if you apply them first thing, then no dust should be underneath but they are tricky to get on and you might want to put a wash cloth in between the screens when you close the system, some of my friends do that to prevent the rubbing marks.

I heard there were some issues with rubbing marks from the other screen. Do the screens touch when its closed? If so that seems like a poor design on Nintendo's part...

Tried them, kept getting air bubbles in there...could never get them out...not to mention getting junk stuck on the inside like hair and whatnot. It pretty much ruined the whole thing. :/

I believe that was the black 3DS that had that problem but its an easy fix. Just when you close you 3DS use a small cloth like the kind for washing eyeglasses and cover the bottom screen.

The way the bottom screen is raised up causes it to scratch the top screen when the system is closed. A huge design flaw that should be fixed with the next iteration. So yes, you either need a screen protector or a cloth placed in between the screens.

I had screen protectors for my DS and they just looked awful over time. The bottom one is all scratched up and full of air bubbles and whatnot. I'm not messing up my 3DS screens with a screen protector. The system closes so you don't have to worry about it being damaged. Just treat it with respect and don't go overboard on the touch screen.

i detest screen protectors. the stylus doesn't 'feel' the same when using them, imho. as samurai said they become nasty, too. (my ocd won't let me tolerate them, i guess: hell, i have a terrible time with the smooth surfaces on handhelds as i spend almost as much time clearing smudges off as i do playing. )

LOL, I know exactly what you mean. I just got my new special edition Zelda 3DS, and I don't want ANY fingerprints on it. I don't like to let anyone else touch it.

i dont use screen protectors and my screens since the ds lite are scratch free. You just need to know what to clean it with and not to close the lid so fast and hard.

Apparently you people have never put decals on anything. You can't tell mine is there. And yeah, I prefer it. Don't think it's necessary but I like having it since I have games that you have to use the touch screen constantly.

I didn't use a screen on protector on my original DS and DS Lite. The screen become bogged down with very find marks. I use a screen protector on both my screen on the my DSi XL and 3DS. Sure, the bottom screen protector is covered in these fine marks, but I can remove the screen protector, replace it and be left with a perfect screen again. So I think a screen protector is VERY important.

I use the HORI one on my 3DS and a generic one on my DSi XL.

Waste of time and money in my opinion.

  • Clean only with a soft cloth
  • Keep the 3DS closed when not in use
  • Keep a soft cloth inside the 3DS fold when not in use.
  • Always close the 3DS gently.

The 3DS bottom screen is designed for stylus use. As long as you're not killing the screen by pushing on it abnormally hard it should be fine without a screen protector. I don't have a single scratch on my DSi, had it since '08 and have never used a screen protector.
