Depending on the situation I may just go for the triple buff, but yeah...I mainly go for red just because of that special attack. xp
What does white do again anyways? I think orange/yellow increases defense a little.

White increases your hunter's speed.
From the MH Wiki:

  • White = Increase the hunter's speed for 90 seconds. Generally acquired from the monster's legs and wings.
  • Red = Increase the hunter's attack and alters some attack animations (e.g. some attacks hit multiple times in a single input) for 60 seconds. Generally acquired from the monster's head.
  • Orange = Increase the hunter's defense and knockback resistance to weak attacks for 45 seconds. Generally acquired from the monster's body.
  • Green = Recover a small amount of health. Generally acquired from the monster's tail.
  • Red + White = Attack Up (Small) + Red and White bonuses for 60 seconds.
  • White + Orange = Defense Up (Small) + Earplugs (resistance to some monster roars) + White and Orange bonuses for 60 seconds.
  • Red + White + Orange = Attack Up (Large) + Defense Up (Large) + Earplugs + Red, White, and Orange bonuses for 60 seconds.

Even if it's hard to get, getting all three buffs is well worth it. It's a HUGE increase in DPS just from AuL alone, but going into golden mode also makes you attack faster.

White increases the effect of red or yellow. So that extra attack from the red becomes a heck of a lot stronger with white. And the best thing is white is so easy to get. Basically you could just shoot the Kinsect blindly at the monster and 90% of the time you'll come back with white. Legs and wings are where you should be aiming, but anything portion of the monster that is not designated as red or yellow is usually white. So as long as you're not hitting the head (which is red) or the belly/back/sometimes tail (which is yellow), you'll get white.

Yellow is Knockback Protection. Which is a so-so skill- having white amplifies the effects even stronger. But the real ringer for yellow is that it takes the already-amplified attack from red+white and increases it to the point your total attack power doubles. That's the true beauty of yellow buffs.

But ya, if you're getting red you might as well, at the very least, grab white also. It will increase your attack at least as much as the red did on its own, and it's the easiest buff to grab. You could shoot blind and score white most of the time.

But what I like to do is grab buffs from smaller monsters along the way. Usually hit up some Konchu, Slagtoth or Genprey for yellow, Iodrome or Rhenopolis for red, or Velocidromes and Apotnath for white. By the time you actually get to the monster you can already have two of the three colors just from the ankle biters...

I always have the HG Earplugs skill, so maybe I never noticed, but I'm pretty sure that wiki is incorrect in saying you get the earplugs skill from a triple buff. Maybe it was something present in MH4 and got nerfed in MH4U, but I'm almost positive you do not get earplugs from a triple buff.

EDIT: And again- I could be wrong seeing as I always have earplugs anyways. But I had read that while back when the game released, and I remember asking @Iggly and he said that you don't actually get earplugs. So Idk. I know a lot of the wikis say you do. Maybe I'll remove my talisman and go triple buff to confirm whether or not that's the case. If it is, it's just a shame the triple buff doesn't give HG Earplugs. THAT would eliminate the need for the HG Earplugs skill.

I actually noticed the Earplugs skill during my hunts, so, yeah.

So it's confirmed you do in fact get earplugs? My mistake then. Maybe I would have noticed if I hadn't had armor sets with HG Earplugs the entire game.

Even more of a reason to triple buff then. Especially if you don't have the skill (which I would recommend having btw- next to the Evasion skills and Sharpness+1, there's no other skill I would rather have than HG Earplugs)

Does anyone want to go on a low-quest hunt-a-thon a little bit later tonight? I want to knock out all my low level quests, but as I said before, doing it with more people makes it feel like less of a grind.

I'll probably shoot for about an hour from now — if there's any interest.

EDIT: I should probably say, we'd take turns picking quests (1-3*).

You got it!
I'm probably gonna eat in about 30 min. so after that I should be good to go for the rest of the night.

@JaxonH

Sounds good, I'd definitely be down for some G-rank hunts with you.

For some bizarre reason (since I main the Gunlance), I just prefer to block the roars, besides...when you do it with the Charge Blade or SnS...it looks awesome. xD

@Megumi
If I mained Lance Id probably feel the same way. I actually am a huge evasion hawk and ALWAYS roll with Evasion+3 and Evade Distance. And I know you can evade through roars as well. Problem is you have to anticipate when they're going to roar perfectly, and even then many monsters roar for so long that even Eva+3 can't get around it. Now, Eva+3 gives 18 frames invincibility. And the Lance hop is actually 18 frames. So you can chain 3 hops together with the Evasion+3 skill and be invincible the entire time- 1.8 seconds to be exact.

I used the Lance for a while in 3U- with the skill set I have it would really be perfect to main Lance/Gunlance. Maybe I'll get around to learning the GunLance sometime. I really don't see anyone using the Lance weapons in 4U which is a shame because they're really solid weapons.

I don't know about 4U, but from my experience in 3U you could dodge every non-water monster's roar with Evasion+2, including Jhen Mohran. It's not hard either. Like everything else in MH, it's easier once you've got a monster down pat and know what it's going to do before it does it.
But this all goes out the window with Khezu and Gigginox. Those two can go die in a fire.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is, I think, a much improved game from 3U, but dang do I wish I could fight that collection of monsters in those areas. I wish they could just release a huge several gb update and patch in all those old monsters and areas, but keep the weapon mechanics the same. It'd probably be really jank, but man that'd be fun.

Don't even know why they left Nargacuga out of this generation. But anyways, yeah...I kinda miss the Sandy Plains, and Nibelsnarf for some reason. lol
