I probably sound like a broken record, but the "we thought this" and "you don't need us to tell you" style is so off-putting on this website! Mainly because it's so pointless. Seriously.
The author even said the site is made up of different reviewers so why are we getting this faux group scene as if they're all sitting in the office having chats about the game? Might seem like a small thing but why don't they just use "I didn't have any issues" or "I thought it was too repetitive" etc? I get that it's a "style" apparently. But if that's true, why the hell would you willingly choose that style?
I'd highly recommend Twin Breaker to anyone who enjoys fast-paced arcade games. Very reminiscent of Alleyway or Pong, but with a few cool modes, a sci-fi storyline and a great soundtrack.
The podcast it's based on, Sacred Symbols, is a great listen as well. Colin Moriarty and Chris Ray Gun are always a joy to listen to, and they differ in opinion on quite a few things which makes it even more fun and interesting to listen to! I picked up the limited edition on PS4 and will definitely double dip for Switch!
@PikaPhantom that makes sense. I might have just been over hyped. I just found myself thinking "that's it?" as I played the demo. I was expecting this big, beautiful atmospheric adventure.
I was so excited when I saw the trailer for the Blind Forest when it was coming to Xbox One originally. Then I got even more excited when I saw it was coming to Switch.
Then I played the demo. I really just don't get what the hype about these games is. We've seen a few dozen "emotional" platformers at this stage, and this series doesn't seem to do anything that sets it apart, or above, any of the others. What am I missing here?
Even though I thought I loved all 3 games, I can't help but feel completely underwhelmed by the package overall. To call it bare bones would be an understatement. The menu looks like it was thrown together in 5 minutes and 64 and Sunshine have not aged well.
The best thing about this package is Galaxy in HD, and it makes the lack of Galaxy 2 even more obvious and painful. I think a 9/10 for this minimal effort collection was far too generous, both for those if us who've played them and for those who never have. That score sets the bar waaaaaaaaaay too high for people who are new to these games. My guess would be most people won't stick with 64 and Sunshine due to their clunkiness.
@Ventilator I completely agree. I absolutely love these three games, but as a collection 9/10 is a complete joke of a score. Especially when you consider the amount of effort that went into the original Super Mario All-Stars.
Between this, the Paper Mario review and the NBA 2K21 review I think I'm pretty much done as regards reviews on this site. Stop being afraid to dock marks for games that are lacking. It's a terrible habit.
Even moreso if you're speaking for the site as a whole (which I despise by the way. It couldn't be more obvious that just one freelancer is sitting in his house playing a free code. I don't like the faux team they try to create with "we" did this and "we" loved that. This isn't 90s CVG).
@status-204 Well, I gotta agree there, they're lacking in a lot of ways. They feel like literally anyone could have written them.
Although, I never really go to any site for reviews anymore. They're kind of a lost art. A fun thing to read every now and then back in the day in magazines but there's not much point to them in this day and age.
"This is the first time we’ve seen Nintendo go to this much effort with a Nintendo 64 game."
It's funny how, not only have they put more effort into Star Fox 64 3D and Ocarina of Time 3D than this ROM of Super Mario 64, they've ALREADY made more effort with this EXACT game in Super Mario 64 DS 🤣🤣 This review might need amendment 😅😅
@scully1888 I'm sure people understand that. They probably just wanted something more substantial. We all know they're good games. If all we're going to say in new reviews is "they're still fun" then what's the point in writing all new reviews? You could just link to the previous ones and give a little summary of how little else there is in the package beyond a soundtrack.
From what I've read, even the detractors are still buying it, they're just lamenting what could have been. So I think a 9 feels like overly praising the package, when the 2 of the 3 games have been playable in a variety of ways for so long.
@the8thark And boy is there plenty of room there. It's a pity, 'cos the news aspect of the site is genuinely so enjoyable. It's updated so frequently and hits on some really cool stories. I love the clean layout of the site and all that.
But the reviews are really hit and miss, and I'm generally not a fan of the over the top cringe humor they use almost constantly. We get it, you're wacky 🤣 But feel free to just write a review. It doesn't have to be filled with puns and references that all come across as trying too hard to be subversive.
Reviews are crammed with attempted jokes and then the comment sections are crammed with questions about the game that the reviewer didn't answer in favor of said jokes. It gets so tiring.
@Octane IGN actually just posted more of an informative article on the technical aspects of it, rather than a review. We all know what the games are like so it's great to have a few summaries out there of how the collection is itself.
@ianl579 Yeah, they really, really need to get rid of the numbering system. It's absolutely terrible on this site and has been completely at odds with the wording of reviews for a long time now. I honestly don't know why they still have it.
@scully1888 I really do understand your stance, and I think you're entitled to it and it really could be seen that way.
I just meant that as the public who weren't directly affected by the abuse, apart from being disheartened and angry over them, we got a video apology and acknowledgement, which is all we really needed. We don't know how they have handled it personally with the people affected.
Maybe they haven't been in contact and this is all they got too. In that case, it would be absolutely awful. But I don't believe that's the case. I fail to see what more they could have done. Maybe putting it at the start of the main stream would have been enough?
@scully1888 I know I keep going on (😆 apologies) but I do think as gamers we have all that we need. The scandal didn't affect us personally, and it would be so presumptuous of us to think that we know even a fraction of what went on or is still going on behind the scenes.
I'm sure those affected have been given their apologies, acknowledgement, what have you. They don't need us to be raging on their behalf. What we got, as the public, is acknowledgment, apology and the promise to repair and do better.
If we can't be happy with that, then what chance do we have as a society? It's not forgive and forget, but I don't think everyone associated with Ubisoft should be damned and dragged through the dirt for some people's mistakes. This was a way to move forward, so I really hope you come around to the idea and let it go. It's not good to hold on to this resentment. Let's focus on the vidjagaaaaaaammmmes!! 😃
@scully1888 I also just think it's a bit disingenuous to the people at Ubisoft who weren't involved in any of the abuse. Could they have given it a grander audience? Yeah, that's fair. But they are obviously ashamed, and they know that anyone who wants to see the apology video can find it easily. For their less informed fans, they probably just wanted to give them a video game focused presentation and not muddy the waters with something some people didn't know about.
That might seem like burying it, but it would also be strange for that to be the first thing someone heard about it if they're not super into the industry.
"Hey, there was this big scandal in case you didn't know, and here is our apology. Now here's video games."
Just seems weird. Those who needed to see it, saw it. That's my take.
@scully1888 also, on a positive note, they are adding the video to the main video. So it could be a result of people being unhappy with it being a separate video. I'm sure you weren't the only one who was bothered about it. I know it's a bit backhanded if they only did it because of pressure, but still, it's more exposure for that apology.
@scully1888 I understand your point, but I think you're making it out to be much more seedy than it actually is. It takes two seconds to scroll through their tweets and see it. It's not as if the video has now disappeared and they're trying to sweep it under the rug. They obviously wanted to focus on video games, so they got the elephant in the room out of the way so the focus could be on fun.
There's literally nothing wrong with that. Here's our apology and update on the situation, now on with the positivity and the real reason people are here. You're completely overthinking it, IMO.
@Old-Red IGN wrote a much better review where they were much more realistic about the encroaching microtransactions. They pointed out that minor gameplay tweaks aren't good enough when the game is so blatantly plagued by this BS. Gave it a 6/10 as a result. Great to see a major site that's not afraid to do that.
@Yanina I understand why it might be seen as overblown, but as the writer said himself, he mentioned it in seven paragraphs. And one of the cons literally says that the game is built around the microtransactions.
While I'm well aware the gameplay might be solid, I think it's a bit rich of the writer and anyone defending the stance to be so unrelenting. It doesn't take much to see other people's points. A simple "I understand why you'd think it should lose a few points" would go a long way. It's a video game review at the end of the day, not some holy grail of work that will be archived and critically revisited for years to come.
Like someone said previously, these kinds of practices are to be fought in the industry if we're going to make any sort of consumer friendly progress. Giving this an 8/10 does nothing to help the downturn and constant monetization of a once awesome pastime.
@Yanina I don't think reasonable complaints aimed at the way the game is riddled with microtransactions is bitching. And I hardly think it will affect third party support. We're over 3 years into the life cycle and third party support is great.
I'm torn here. On one hand, I get that the game seems to be pretty good, and gameplay is the most important thing. On the other hand, microtransactions should be snuffed out. From an ethical standpoint it feels like the game should be docked a few points for such anti-consumer nonsense.
I love the designs of nearly all of these Hori and PowerA controllers, I really do. But why oh WHY will Nintendo not use these designs for their own proper Pro Controllers? Think about the amazing designs we could have at this stage. It's utterly bizarre to have these tied down to wired controllers with stripped down features. Dangit
I'm super happy with my Switch, but I totally get the frustration over announcements this year. It's forgivable IMO though, given everything that's going on. After the first few absolutely packed years, we've still gotten Animal Crossing, Paper Mario and another well deserved Wii U port.
I'm sure they have more up their sleeve for the end of the year, and whatever those games are, coupled with my massive backlog of third party and indie stuff, means I'll definitely be playing this bad boy til the end of its life cycle!
@Agriculture I agree that they've totally done a great turnaround as regards messaging and services, I still wonder though if it's enough for them to have a real go at this next gen
This is absolutely fantastic. I'm so happy with everything the Switch has to offer and I've been playing it pretty much every day since launch. This is so deserved!
@TG16_IS_BAE yeah like, I quite like Chris Scullion and I actually appreciate that he comes and discusses things in the comments and clarifies things that people ask. Despite using some of his lingo I didn't mean to insult him, it was more a jab at people being volatile over his opinion, which is all it is, and he has said it several times. In fact, I quite like the way he looks at his review process in that he doesn't outright tell people to buy this and that, but rather tries to connect games in a "if you liked that then you'll like this" kind of way. Those are the most useful reviews IMO
@TG16_IS_BAE just poking fun. The comment sections under this author's reviews or features are like they're copied and pasted. It's not really his fault
@scully1888 I didn't mean for it to come across as nasty by the way. I was just pointing out the patterns of your comment sections. You probably know it better than anyone
@TG16_IS_BAE I actually think this was a great review for the score matching the text. He states how great the games are, and with the online being the only thing seemingly lacking, an 8 seems solid to me. You know?
If the guy responds to a comment and tells them "I've been doing this for (insert fluctuating time frame here, eg. 14 years, 11 years etc.) take a shot.
If he lists off the amount of games he's reviewed finish your drink.
If he says "with the greatest of respect" to someone, take two shots and chase it with your main drink.
If he replies to someone else that he's "used to it and it doesn't bother him" down your whole drink and chase it with a shot.
And finally, if he responds to someone sarcastically and puts a heart at the end to try and convince everyone he's cool and collected and not infuriated within an inch of his life, down all drinks in the surrounding area, even if they aren't yours, and then go play some video games!
@Cosats that makes sense too. At the moment they're just plonked at the end with no real exhaustive thoughts. Like, how negative was the majority of this review? Would you expect the author to say it's "not bad" after reading it? I sure wouldn't!
This comment section is bonkers. The only thing that could surprise me now is if someone said "you know what, you're right. I see your point of view. Have a great day."
Does that ever happen? This is an unofficial Nintendo themed site running an OP ED that no one will even remember in a days time, tops. And people are getting worked up (much like myself) over typed words by people they don't even know. No one is going to be in your house checking up on what difficulty you're selecting.
Jeez Louise, can we all just enjoy some video games?

If he says "with the greatest of respect" to someone, take two shots and chase it with your main drink.
If he replies to someone else that he's "used to it and it doesn't bother him" down your whole drink and chase it with a shot.
And finally, if he responds to someone sarcastically and puts a heart at the end to try and convince everyone he's cool and collected and not infuriated within an inch of his life, down all drinks in the surrounding area, even if they aren't yours, and then go play some video games!
I love Nintendo Life! ❤
Re: Video: New Pokémon The Movie: Coco Trailer Shows Off The Film's Wonderful Animation
I'm really enjoying the Pokémon reboot movies, so looking forward to this!!

Re: Review: Skully - More Than Bare-Bones, But Ugly As Sin On Switch
@Cosats that makes sense too. At the moment they're just plonked at the end with no real exhaustive thoughts. Like, how negative was the majority of this review? Would you expect the author to say it's "not bad" after reading it? I sure wouldn't!
Re: Soapbox: There's No Shame In Playing On Easy, Even If You're A Pro
This comment section is bonkers. The only thing that could surprise me now is if someone said "you know what, you're right. I see your point of view. Have a great day."
Does that ever happen? This is an unofficial Nintendo themed site running an OP ED that no one will even remember in a days time, tops. And people are getting worked up (much like myself) over typed words by people they don't even know. No one is going to be in your house checking up on what difficulty you're selecting.
Jeez Louise, can we all just enjoy some video games?
