Re: Talking Point: Five Years On From The Frenzy Of 'NX' Becoming The Switch

anzzjam

The switch was a needed hit but I truly miss the ds/wii and 3ds/wii u eras. The 3ds is my favorite system ever but it seems the switch does a little bit of everything but nothing exceptionally. I also miss the smaller game releases from Nintendo. With everything HD now, even combining the handheld and console divisions has resulted in far fewer games a year.

@BeautyandtheBeer The banning I can understand but the logic used their can be iffy at best. What I dislike the most is bans on certain methods of battle. Like baton pass for example. I think it’s built into the game and since stealth rocks seems fine, and every team runs them, if baton pass was valid it would make more people run haze and whirlwind which makes for a more interesting game.

Re: Feature: Where Does Competitive Pokémon Go From Here?

@Ludovsky Which is strange because playing against your friends is more tedious than any gen since WiFi became available. I have no idea what the hell happened with gen 8. So many stupid decisions on top of a lackluster effort equaled the worst generation by far. In my book, of course. It’s the worst due to the potential for a great Pokémon game taking in all the best ideas over the years. Sure, possibly on a technical level, with all the changes and what not it’s better than gen 3 let’s say. Well, of course it is, the special physical split already occurred, abilities are more fleshed out etc. Gen 8 added very little and actually made quite a few things worse.

Re: Feature: Where Does Competitive Pokémon Go From Here?

@Chocobo_Shepherd Those are different beasts. The difference between the best kart character and worst aren’t huge and more importantly, trade offs for speed are made. Pokemon also tasks you with making 6 selections and require that your 6 selections compliment each other.
It’s a turn based game, skill will only get you so far if you don’t use the meta defining Pokémon. If legendaries are allowed in the format you play, you leave yourself at a disadvantage if you don’t use legendary Pokémon. With the Pacharisu example, I believe that was only used because certain Pokémon or move combinations weren’t currently available in that tournament. It was also a single example, on a team that used some commonly used Pokémon.

Re: Feature: Where Does Competitive Pokémon Go From Here?

@roy130390 Intimidate or guts? As cool of a design, luxray is a bit disappointing. Based on its design, I think bulky or fast would have worked but it’s a bit in between which makes it hard to justify over another electric type. It looks like something that could learn truck room so if it was slower and more bulky, guts could have had a cool niche.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Have A 'Way' You Play Certain Switch Games?

anzzjam

@JustMonika BOTW is not meant to be played on a handheld. It exists but the game was certainly developed to be played on a television. Same with Splatoon 2. 3rd party games sure, they play better elsewhere but 1st party? There is no dedicated home console anymore, so of course many games were designed with the tv in mind.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Price?

anzzjam

@johnvboy If Nintendo themselves found this to be a good value, they wouldn’t have had a separate announcement for the price. They purposely split the announcement of the new service and the price. I have money, I love Nintendo, and I think this is a ripoff for anyone not shackled to animal crossing. It’s so weird to tie a retro service and dlc to the most popular game from last year. I can sort of see the strategy but I think it mostly doesn’t make sense.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Price?

anzzjam

@WiltonRoots The price just seems too high. Using Nintendo’s former pricing structure, SNES games are worth 8 bucks and N64 games are worth $10. Since SNES were added with no additional cost, charging $30 more seems to be weird number. I have money, I just think this price is almost arbitrary so I won’t bite. It’s fine if others find value, as this really seems aimed at a small subset of users who play animal crossing and enjoy N64 games.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Have A 'Way' You Play Certain Switch Games?

anzzjam

@LordVal Interesting, as I love Splatoon but never liked the single player much. I’ve been thinking of getting the octo expansion. Do you use motion? For me, any game I like using motion on is a no go on handheld. Donkey Kong country on handheld is a real treat though, it looks bad on a big screen so handheld all the way.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Have A 'Way' You Play Certain Switch Games?

anzzjam

Mostly handheld. With that said, I cannot play Splatoon in handheld mode as I tend to do poorly. It works well in table top though. Of course, fitness games like boxing and ring fit are on the big screen as well. BOTW is playable in handheld but that’s another that I much prefer on the TV. I miss the days is dedicated handhelds and consoles from Nintendo but I do admit that the switch does a decent job consolidating the two.

Re: Feature: We Finally Finished The Game With An Almost-Perfect Metascore

@nessisonett It could be that they don’t like visual novels. Perhaps novels in general, which would be strange to me. It’s weird when people hate games that aren’t their taste. I don’t like Animal Crossing but it’s not a bad game. I just don’t like it. I’m not going to go to Animal Crossing games and say nasty things, that’s crazy to me. Same with sports games. They don’t interest me, and outside of references to sleazy monetization in games like nba2k, it’s not fair to say a certain game stinks in genres I don’t frequent.

Re: Nintendo Leaker Suggests Pricing Of Switch Online's Expansion Pack Could Be Tied To "Licensing Costs"

anzzjam

@somnambulance In general, a movie costs about 3 times less to own than a video game. A show with 6 or more seasons would cost about the price of a video game.

Would anyone subscribe to Netflix if it only had 10 shows and 30 or so movies? No, not at all. It’s not a good price to stream 20 games for $30 a year, games that based on VC pricing would cost about 180 dollars to own.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Price?

anzzjam

I do find the “if it’s too much for you, don’t buy it” comments a bit silly. There’s a poll on this article and we are being asked to share our thoughts. Share away everyone! Don’t get caught up gauging others on what they believe is fair. That’s what the poll is for. I think the price stinks for anyone who isn’t interested in animal crossing. That’s not an insane stance to have.

Re: Metroid Dread Staff Say They've Been Left Out Of The Game's Credits, MercurySteam Responds

anzzjam

@Kyranosaurus I would recommend against not buying a single game based on this knowledge. The reason is that it would be extremely rare to find a game that properly credits everyone’s work. Any game of this magnitude is an offender. I haven’t purchased this game due to the high price tag. It’s not a boycott I just think Nintendo games have lost their pricing structure of the past. Everything is 60 now. With the loss of a dedicated handheld, games are all 60. I lament this, but it’s not just a Metroid Dread problem. Take the Pokémon remakes. Those are 40 buck games if they were made in the 3ds era and would control better due to the dual screens (impressions show that the loss of the screen is a detriment)

Re: Metroid Dread Staff Say They've Been Left Out Of The Game's Credits, MercurySteam Responds

@ZER0AO Great points. Much of the outage seems to stem from the concept that this is out of form for the industry. It isn’t. Is it right? That’s the more interesting topic. I would say it is okay but only when it is clear what gets you in the credits. To open a can of worms, that jerk that made Minecraft had his name removed. I don’t like that jerk but I think his name should still be in the game, since he was deemed at the time worthy for the credits. Future conduct does not diminish ones contributions to a past project. I think you should want your industry to adapt to the changes as you point out, there is plenty of time and room for all names. But… is that the purpose of credits? I don’t know, though I want to say no. I think there should be a line, but that’s hard to gauge too.

Re: Metroid Dread Staff Say They've Been Left Out Of The Game's Credits, MercurySteam Responds

anzzjam

@BAN Why did you respond in such a manner? It is common to have your name in the credits if you were a major contributor to a video game. That is a fact. Yes, they would not pop the game open, but on a resume, you would certainly put you were a credited programmer for such and such. I didn’t even disagree with you, for the most part. This is another reminder for me to stop thinking that people can say something and have someone else agree or disagree in a respectable way. It’s like any job, you list your accomplishments and accolades in your resume. By not being credited, there’s one less thing to put on your resume. I thought it was abundantly clear that it’s not the end of the world nor is it the only metric used when hiring in the video game industry. If money is good enough, why have credits? Who cares, right?
Apologies for typos, sucks typing on my phone.

Re: Metroid Dread Staff Say They've Been Left Out Of The Game's Credits, MercurySteam Responds

@invictus4000 No moral dilemma, I would agree. I do find this example interesting, as some debate what the line is. Policy is policy of course, but that’s boring. But policy is also why this is not a ethical failure of the company, though that doesn’t mean there is no room for debate on what individuals believe going forward what the standard should be.
I would say no to adding this individual after the fact, but I mull over the idea that perhaps this policy is insufficient.

Re: Metroid Dread Staff Say They've Been Left Out Of The Game's Credits, MercurySteam Responds

anzzjam

@BAN Immoral is not the word I would use, I would use expectation. In this particular industry, those who contribute in a meaningful way to the final product get credited. This expectation does not exist when looking for work as a carpenter. The only question, at least to me, is if 8 months over a set amount of hours on a particular portion of this game warrants getting your name in the credits.

Re: Metroid Dread Staff Say They've Been Left Out Of The Game's Credits, MercurySteam Responds

anzzjam

@Yorumi I get your point about other industries, but you know that movies and video games operate differently. If I am looking for a job, people don’t expect that to be qualified, my work was credited by my previous employer. You can’t make your point that other industries don’t credit so who cares? This industry does so if your name is not listed, it can be to your determinant. There is an expectation already set that having your name in the credits helps your prospects. You can argue that this person is not deserving of being credited, that can be a logical conclusion, but you are comparing apples and androids here.
