It's Nintendo's loss for not showing anything off. Sony's too. The dearth of 3rd party titles was to be expected this late into the lifespan of the Switch.
There just aren't going to be a lot of AAA Switch ports coming in at this point. Nintendo will obviously keep its remaining arsenal of 1st party titles for future directs. What can you do? TGAs had two very exciting Smash announcements in the past, but DLC is finally done, so I never thought there'd be much to see on the Nintendo side. Plus Best Action Game is really nothing to sneeze at.
The point about the actual awards being an afterthought half the time is completely valid - it's downright insulting to those nominated, and some of us would actually really like to hear speeches from the devs.
What's really missing is a "best DLC expansion" award, since major updates have become such a huge part of modern games. The Animal Crossing update was massive and breathed new life into a game that had just about gone stale. It would've been a contender!
I can't help but contrast Nintendo's approach with the NSO subscription service — a handful of ancient games now and then at the best of times — with Xbox's Game Pass, which offers the entire back catalog all the way up to the day one release of brand new games.
Some key differences: Game Pass costs more of course, and Nintendo holds the crown jewels of gaming (Mario, Zelda, etc) and they know it. But the biggest factor is the arrogance that comes with being a market leader. Xbox is sweetening the pot every day to lure new gamers, while Nintendo, riding high, thinks it can get us to excited to pay for the same 90s bangers time and time again. The NSO Expansion Pack is the most egregious example yet of Nintendo believing it can take its gamers for granted.
The pendulum won't swing until the market share does. I'm not holding out any hope that Nintendo will suddenly start dropping games into the NSO any faster.
All that sky and nowhere to go. It would've been a lot more fun if the "sky" portions of the game had been more than just flying to various portals to the ground.
The best part of the game by far was Skyloft itself and its charming citizens. It's no Windfall Island but it was still a very lived-in, nicely designed main town.
Underwater platforming is a delight!! There's fish, there's frog suits, your controls get inversed sometimes. And that groovy underwater music! Too much time on land counting nipples makes you lose sight of what really matters in video games: the sea.
@Old-Red This must be the answer and honestly it's a scandal. I have eight joy-cons in my home and they all drift to a greater or lesser extent. All fixes - even invasive ones - are only temporary. I would have been willing to spring for "Pro" joy-cons but if they're legally compelled to release the same old faulty ones then this new Switch model is DOA for me.
What's the point of a fancy new screen for handheld mode when my character walks inexorably into the sea no matter what I do?
Speaking of business practices, it doesn't help to call your faithful readers crybabies. I check this site every week because I anxiously await a handful of titles to be announced (Super Mario RPG, Majora's Mask... Banjo-Kazooie someday?). No one cares about Spelunker or Super Turrican, and none of the upcoming Wiiware games I've seen look even halfway decent, so people who follow VC updates have fair reason to moan when several months go by without any really great games coming out. Nintendo seems to do a pretty good job of spacing out their good in-house games throughout the year so people don't get too bored or too overspent. Why can't they do the same with the VC?

Re: Nintendo Adds To Switch Online's Expansion Pack Tier With Paper Mario 64, Out Next Week
I feel validated by this embarrassing drip feed. Nintendo really needs to respect its customer base again.
Re: I'd Rather You Didn't Put Me In Mortal Kombat, Says Keanu Reeves
I thought DLC had wrapped for MK11? Did I miss an announcement or is this speculative with a future installment in mind?
Re: Random: Sam Lake Jumped In A Lake To Promote Alan Wake: Remastered

Re: After Months Of 'Switch Pro' Rumours, Nintendo Officially Unveils The Nintendo Switch OLED Model
What good is a nicer screen for handheld mode if it has the same trash joycons?
Re: Talking Point: The State of Play of the Virtual Console
"I asked if VC gamers were crybabies, I never actually SAID they were..."
Given the tone of the article and the above-quoted "spoilt" remark, it was pretty clearly implied. Not cool.
