Re: Pachter: "I think Nintendo becomes completely irrelevant"

@theblackdragon
Nice Christmas touch to your avatar!

About the article. It's funny, because I just bought a Vita and a 3DS XL, and next summer will be the twenty year anniversary of me buying a SNES, so I'll buy a Wii U to celebrate. But, I'm done, especially with Sony and MS. One reason is their increasingly anti-consumer behaviour. But I'm not going to get a PS4 or an Xbox 720. I'm going Nintendo-centric again at the least. To sum up; I think people would consider me a "hardcore" gamer, and I'm getting a Wii U and nothing else of the next generation. So there...

@Tsuchiya
Haha! Either you're joking or you've comically misunderstood me. This is about Renegade Kid creating a direct sequel to the NES game Zelda II Adventure of Link, a sidescrolling action Zelda game, with a tiny bit of overhead map wandering. The only thing coming into this from Mutant Mudds is Renegades great sense of 8bit graphics, music, and gameplay. Imagine Zelda IIs graphics and music and gameplay, but with the ability to jump between 3D layers like in Mutant Mudds. That's how it's in the "style of Mutant Mudds".

Now carefully start adding new polish to the graphics and music, add new gameplay elements like the aforementioned hookshot, and layer jumping. Take out the tear inducing level grinding, and add a great new 3D overworld map. Add a cool but bare bones story, and hello, wonderful new addition to the Zelda series!

@Tsuchiya

I understand your trepidation, but respectfully disagree, as you yourself have pointed out two other devs besides Nintendo who've managed to make great Zelda games. So I really don't see how Renegade Kids version would automatically suck. Is there a danger? Of course, but if Flagship and Greezo can do it, why couldn't Renegade Kid? Why couldn't WayForward, Retro Studios, and Frontier? I'm sure with Nintendo's guidance and quality control all these studios could produce great Zelda games and should be given the chance. This free's up Nintendo to focus on new IP.

And before anyone brings up Other M, the problem there is story/characterization. Though not as good as Prime series the graphics and gameplay were solid. Story was Nintendo's fault on that one.

And before anyone asks why I included Frontier in my list of Zelda devs. I included them because if you matched WindWaker Zelda with the Lostwinds series it would be an excellent match.

I just played the 3DS demo, and I must say, this game is great. I'm definitely going to be buying this, and probably the Wii U version. The 3D is just so good. Probably my best 3D experience on 3DS so far. (Just got a 3DS XL).
What really hit me while playing this, is that this dev, Renegade Kid, needs to make Zelda III-D Adventure of Link 2. A direct sequel to Zelda II, and featuring all the great 2D sprite work and 8bit music this guy is capable of. Now add in the multiple background/foreground interaction and travel. Also, Links very first thing should be to find the legendary hookshot(clawshot) and he'd use it to traverse heights, draw enemies towards him etc. Bionic commando stuff, but Link can still jump by himself.

Doesn't anyone else feel how great that would be?

Re: New Super Mario Bros. U Director Explains Why Peach Isn't A Playable Character

ThreadShadow

I understand they wanted a level playing field, and that's fine, but guess what, in Super Mario Bros. 2 Toad and Luigi played differently too, it wasn't just Peach, er Princess Toadstool. Why can they be divested of their mechanics but Peach can't?

Anyway, I'm tired of it. I want a New Super Mario Bros that features Mario and Luigi, and Peach and Daisy, and throw in a couple Toads in case a couple guys don't want to play the girls. Just make them available.

Also, here's an idea. If Peach is so much more stuck to her previous gameplay mechanics, then why not make a four-player Mario featuring Mario, Luigi , Peach, and Toad, with all the abilities each had in SMB2? You've got to work together using your abilities to get through. Peach (float), Luigi, (high/floaty jump) etc. etc..

Re: WayForward Would Like To Make A Metroid Game

ThreadShadow

These guys are good. They need to be given a chance with ever one of Nintendo's IP's. Can you imagine how cute and sexy Samus would be? Not only is the artwork there, these guys also know great gameplay, fun, fresh, retro, imaginative, creative. Sound and music is a lock too. WayForward = talent.

Re: Miyamoto Working to Encourage More Wii U Third-Party Developers

ThreadShadow

@Gamelord08

No, sorry. Metroid Other M while not as good as the Prime series, featured great gameplay, and good graphics. Music was nice, but forgettable. The weak point, was all Nintendo's fault. The story concept was weak, and the execution of characters was poor. Doesn't sound like it was Team Ninja's fault on that one. Gameplay good, story weak, characterizations poor.

In any case, I'm willing to take hits and misses to see fresh takes on Nintendo IPs, whilst freeing Nintendo up to be creative and make new IPs.

Re: Insider Reports Suggest That Focus On Eternal Darkness 2 Has Crippled Silicon Knights

ThreadShadow

I am fortunate to never have had ED.

On another note. Not to be yet another voice ragging on SK, but to tell you the truth I just don't understand the level of praise these guys get. They just haven't earned it in my opinion. They've made five games.

1. Blood Omen/Legacy of Kain (PS). I don't like the BO/LoK series, but I'll still say that a better dev (Crystal Dynamics) took that IP and turned it into something better.

2. Eternal Darkness (GC). The only interesting thing here is the Sanity Meter, and apparently Nintendo has that locked up so tight, it sounds more like their idea then SK's. I think there is a healthy percentage of rose-tinting going on with the praise this game gets.

3. MGS: Twin Snakes (GC) Wasn't even their game. SK was just a task force to do the grunt work. Nintendo was the teacher, Kojima was the genious, SK was the student. (Oh and some Japanese director was the guy who ruined the cut-scenes, but anyway...).

4. Too Human (X360) Finally something interesting from SK, but too many canon shots sunk this ship.

5. X-men Destiny (Multi) And by this good article we see what happened with this one.

So. How can SK honestly be grouped with "the best teams in the world", or a great studio etc. etc..They just honestly haven't proved themselves yet, and at the rate they are going they may never have the chance.

I'll give them a point for ED(because everyone likes the Sanity Meter), and a point for Too Human, and half a point for "porting" MGS to GC. (Also they didn't make GEX, Crystal Dynamics did.)

Re: Award Winning Short Film Shows the Power of Zelda and Escapism

ThreadShadow

She's a cute Link.

1. No one should be abused, be it by peers or relatives etc.
2. Children should do well in school and do their homework, and help out with chores.
3. Everyone should have time for recreation.

Having said that. Watching this video, at times I think it could also be called "Addiction", or "Obsession" just as easily as "Escapism". Her schoolwork/grades are suffering because of her "obsession", so to speak.

Nothing is sweeter then playing a game after the homework and chores have been done for the day. It's a great feeling, instead of the limp feeling of putting chores and homework off to play.
The mother was completely out of control, but Danni could have saved herself and her mother some grief by getting the homework done, doing the dishes to help take that stress off the family.

I'm not standing up for abusive parents, but lets face it, it's not easy being a mother or a father. Children need to be part of the family circle too instead of just waiting to get away. That's how you grow love. And pretty soon you don't need as much "escapism' as you did. But it certainly isn't easy being a child in that kind of environment.

I can relate to the need to escape, and I can relate to (a "sane" level) of frustration towards someone whose life is take up with an obsession with electronic devices. But abuse and tantrums and yelling isn't the answer. Neither is killing bullies or parents the answer.

Re: Neko Entertainment Bringing Puddle to Wii U

ThreadShadow

No, this is a good one. It's got lots of challenge and variety, even just from playing the demo. Good artwork too. Fluidity is really great, but this one is great too, and more it's own thing. I'm going to get this for Wii U. Options for motion controls will be fun too.

Re: Square Enix Trademark Reveals New Mana Game

ThreadShadow

Is this a trademark by SE North America, or SE Japan? If it's North America, why couldn't it be a release of Seiken Densetsu 3? At this time, calling it Secret of Mana 2 might cause too much consumer confusion (2? eh? wha? where was 1?) so giving it it's own name would make sense at this time.

Re: Capcom: The Next Gen Doesn't Start With Wii U

ThreadShadow

My thoughts on this statement are that it could be taken this way:
Wii U begins the next gen console cycle, but will be there for a little while by itself, thus when X720 and PS4 arrive, the next generation cycle/battle will begin "in earnest".

Re: Rumour: Sega Is Working On Skies of Arcadia Remake

ThreadShadow

Please be a downloadable HD remake of Gamecube version, please!! The name we're all looking for is "Skies of Arcadia Legends HD", right? Thinking about the wii Gamepad though, and the VMU mini games from the DC version, it would be cool for them to include those on the Gamepad, maybe updated versions. Could they also include 1st-person "look" and "jump" even though you don't need it. Just feels better.

Re: Talking Point: The Rules for Violence in Video Games

ThreadShadow

Everybody realizes that "cartoonish" doesn't equal "blood filling the screen right? Neither is calling grotesque violence "over the top" an excuse for it. If some person was splattered and squashed by the side of the road, blood everywhere, would you excuse it by saying it's "over the top", and "cartoonish"? No, we wouldn't, so why do we excuse the same depiction of brutal, grotesque, inhuman, violence in videogames with those same terms?

I don't want to play a game about shooting african animals or any animals, but the thing is, it's okay to shoot and slaughter depictions of humans, but all of a sudden we are offended by a game that lets us shoot depictions of animals from a certain continent?

Re: Fluidity Is Your New Club Nintendo Reward

ThreadShadow

This is a great little game. I did pick it up when it was released (for real coins), but for anyone who has missed it, here's another chance to get it. I'll just have to wait till the 19th. Although maybe there will be something for me when they swap out the portable title.

Re: Bonsai Barber is a Snip at 150 Coins on US Club Nintendo

ThreadShadow

"Picked" this up the day they announced it on Club Nintendo. It was on the bottom of my Wiiware list for ages. I new it would be quality because it was from Nintendo and Zoonami (i.e. "Dude from Goldeneye"!). It is cute and it is fun, and it is a quality title.

@Kirk He did a good job!

This is the first Club Nintendo title I've taken since Excitebike WR and You, Me, and the Cubes. Fun stuff!
