I know that no one will ever read this, but I had to point out why the reader's choices appear to be "contradictory." When you allow readers to choose best Wii game, best handheld, and best overall, it's definitely possible to get 3 different games, even if the best overall game must be the same as one of their other picks. Consider that letters are Wii games, numbers are handheld games, and each column represents different voters. Wii: A B A B B HH: 1 2 2 2 1 O/A: A 2 A B 1 Best Wii game: B Best Handheld: 2 Best Overall: A
@Nintendoftw: We Nintendo fans here at Nintendolife really don't believe the Wii is horrible or a failure. What makes you say that? I couldn't find more than a few games worth purchasing for the Gamecube, but I have almost 20 games for the Wii, and I've sunk another couple hundred into WiiWare and Virtual Console.
Anyway... With so many huge releases coming so close together (SMG2, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Metroid: Other M, Skyward Sword), it's tough to imagine that Nintendo isn't just winding down here. I really don't think that once these are out that they'll be developing a new game in each franchise for the current console. I'm guessing that a new console will be announced early 2011 and will be released by the holidays.
@Burny: I don't have WSR. I was basing it on my experience with Red Steel 2, which cannot be played sitting down.
No force detection would make it better for Zelda, but I'm still concerned at having to do stuff like bowl bombs. If the game frequently requires full range of motion, it's going to be tough to play it whilst sitting down.
I don't know if I like the idea of standing in front of my TV to play this game for 30-60 hours. If that's something N really expects me to do, then I probably won't be able to finish the game until 2014.
@Marioman: Really? Bohemian Rhapsody, Paranoid, Pour Some Sugar on Me, Interstate Love Song, Sharp Dressed Man, Self Esteem? It's hard to imagine you haven't heard each of those songs hundreds of times.
@buffalobob: I'm pretty sure, given the context, that it's referring to online multiplayer. And if you believe that most games on the Wii have perfectly (or even marginally) functional online capabilities, then you are blind.
Rhansley why do you keep insisting that the Wii will be around until 2015 or 2016? If I could I'd bet you $1k that a new Nintendo system will be released no later than 2013. This generation, Nintendo has the most cripplingly underpowered hardware, and there's no reason for it. The tech is cheap now, so Nintendo should have a more powerful system.
@Donatello: "At least the Wii is getting Mega Man 10 first before the others. And again, playing it with the Wii Remote 'nes style on it's side Classic Controller is the only way to fly" I agree 100%
@Hardy83: I fail to see how the 3DO had no third party support. It had quite a few games, all of them 3rd party. The hardware itself was also 3rd party. The real issue was the cost of the system.
I said it before kind of jokingly, but I think it will be an announcement that one of the anticipated games (Zelda, Metroid, SMG2) will come out much earlier than expected.
Anyone saying that HD is worthless or unimportant, or isn't much better than SD, clearly does not have a nice HDTV. I love my 46" Samsung, I wish Twilight Princess was in HD, and I really hope Nintendo pushes an HD console as soon as possible. The tech is really cheap now.
They will have a playable demo of Zelda, followed by this astounding surprise... Zelda will hit store shelves on Monday! (after the summit, so March 1)
@MasterGraveheart I figured you were talking about Mega Man 3, and that is indeed the case: http://sydlexia.com/mega_man_3_sucks.htm I assume this Blade Man and this game in general will be much better.
And of course, Mega Man 3 wasn't made by Capcom, it was produced by Hi-Tech Expressions and developed by William and Stephen Rozner (but obviously licensed by Capcom for some reason).
@Rensch The robot masters are always made for some practical purpose and then reprogrammed by Dr. Wily.
I'm not a graphics whore or anything. I love my retro consoles. Still, I would love to see Nintendo go HD as soon as possible. I have a 46" Samsung and would like to make full use of it.
Never thought I'd say this, but this game seems a bit too kiddish... It might just be the cut-scenes or the way Klonoa flails in the air when he does his "hover." Also, the platforming is a bit tricky - I'm never quite sure if I'm actually going to land on a platform when I jump over a pit. The boss fights are kinda fun though I guess. I may or may not return to this game to complete it.
Prochnow I need to fix your quote real quick. "But I would buy more Sudoku / puzzle games from Hudson, since they simply made the best games for anything, ever." Obviously.
pass. Got Core, played it for 5-10 minutes, didn't like it. The music is bleh and the gameplay uninteresting for me. It seems like it should be a Flash game for people that get really bored on their computers, rather than a WiiWare game.
I had to look up spastic on wikipedia. It carries no offensive connotation whatsoever in the States, so I found it strange that silentmountain would edit the spelling of it with the @ symbol and that the game would be pulled.
Hmm... apparently it's VERY offensive in Britain. In the States, it's commonly used and is an essential term for describing certain players or certain actions in poker.
Majora's Mask The Adventure of Link Ocarina of Time Link to the Past The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker Twilight Princess
These are my rankings from best to "worst" Zelda games. It actually makes me sad to have to put Wind Waker so far down at the bottom because I thought that game was excellent. However, Twilight Princess is clearly deserving of its spot at the bottom of that heirarchy because it is clearly inferior to those above it.
I would still give it an 8 because I'm physically incapable of assigning a Zelda game a lower score than that. But this entry was far too linear and boring to even compare to the rest of the series. "Yay, I beat a dungeon! What should I do now? I know, I think I'll beat another dungeon!" Bleh.
Even after upgrading my TV from a 25" CRT to a 32" LCD, I still haven't felt motivated to play through this game a second time. Maybe after I finish replaying Faxanadu, Battle of Olympus, Crystalis, Zelda, Majora's Mask, Super Metroid, and Metroid Prime 3, and finally play GTAIV for the first time, I'll make my way through this game again.
There are a few things I could live without: 1. More Breakout/Arkanoid clones 2. More Tetris clones 3. More Warlords clones These games have been popular since the Atari 2600 and I think it's time they're put to rest. They're too simple and relatively unexpandable to be anything other than a mini-game.
@MedaVerse/J.Lowther From this review, there seem to be some very superficial changes that could have improved this game, that need to be in the next game regardless of concept: 1. The user interface should be consistent. If in one menu, 'A' is used for select/progress and 'B' is used for back, then that control scheme should be used in every single menu. 2. Make sure the controls are fluid. It sounds like twisting the wiimote was supposed to emulate the 'spinner' controls from Warlords. This is pretty neat, but don't feel like you "must" use motion control if it's not working perfectly. We Wii gamers are perfectly content with motionless controls.
Make sure you at least touch up on these for your next game, and please don't give us anymore breakout or warlords clones.
@Ren: Confirm Blue and Red. I have a red one, and one of my friends has a blue one. There were also black, gold, and the special edition colors that game with a special colored N64: Fire Orange, Grape (or Atomic) Purple, Ice Blue, Jungle Green, Smoke Grey and Watermelon Red, and there was also the Pokemon console+controller.
@Djungelurban: Oh I guess it is in the Swedish top 20. Anyway it's still not getting nearly enough love in the US. I actually don't know anyone who's bothered to purchase it. There was one who wanted to play it but was dissuaded by the difficulty of the XBL achievements. Yes, he really wouldn't buy the game because he didn't want to have a low achievement score for the game. So he continues to buy Madden every. single. year.
I thought the joy of fishing was sitting in a boat in the middle of a lake drinking beer and having inappropriate discussion with buddies. Oh yeah, and stabbing a leach with a hook. I don't get how all this is properly translated onto WiiWare in such a way that everybody can't get enough of it. At least Rock Man 9 is still in the top 20 in Japan, thought it seems not anywhere else in the world.
I just bought this game, and I must say... I hate it. The game is too hard for how poor the movement is. Being able to move or shoot only up/down/left/right (no diagonal) is infuriating. Being able to jump only straight up in the air, unless you are jumping to a platform, isn't so bad, but you can also jump straight to your death if you are in front of water.
Rooms that can kill you if you don't know they are death rooms are bs as well. What game does that, seriously? It was I think only the first "dungeon" where you grab 2 potions then head into the third room and you are dropped into a pool of death water.
I love playing retro games, even ones that I haven't played before (so I'm not biased by nostalgia). Ys Book I & II was awesome. Neutopia was decent, Neutopia II is excellent from what I've played so far. It goes without saying that Super Metroid is one of the greatest video games of all time (and I had never played it before!).
I can't find a single person that hates this game. Let me be the first. I also hate that you lose all your items from dungeon to dungeon. And there are rooms where the lights turn off and the door locks behind you, and you have to do some death jumps in the dark. If you weren't paying damn close attention when you entered the room, you will die. And there's nothing you can do about it.

@6 - Well, the song should at least be in the cutscene where Samus fights Mother Brain. I believe that was where this song played in Super Metroid.
