Keep in mind a lot of players know very little about game development or programming in general, as evidenced by comments about developers being “lazy” or “lying”. When you take in to account that this is Gamefreak’s first foray into a Pokémon game on console, it’s quite a successful first try, and hopefully it’ll be a learning experience that will help them grow with the next game.
@Galenmereth Oh for sure, and with such a range of combinations for each move and Pokémon, I get it, you can’t have every Pokémon to interact with every move differently. The moves themselves look really great imo, and the unique animations for certain Pokémon, including Dynamaxing are fun as well, and there is enough variety that visually I have yet to be bored of combat.
Game looks great, but there are definitely some pop-in issues. The cities and gyms have some fantastic designs, while routes and the wild are rather standard. Level design still feels very tile by tile seen throughout the series, and hopefully the next game they make they explore a little more free-flowing level design.
I didn’t really get excited over Dynamaxing pre-release, but it really has a nice weight to it. Overall I see why they had to make cuts in areas like total Pokémon available, there is such a wide range of animations for every move and Pokémon.
@Kalmaro And Bigfoot believers would probably say their claims match up with the evidence as well.
Let’s break it down though: Anyone can make any claim. The burden of proof is on the one making the claim. Those receiving the proof can either find it compelling enough to agree on the conclusion, or find it insufficient to warrant the conclusion. If one finds the proof offered insufficient, repeating the same information is not likely to change their view. If those making the claim suggest the evidence is objectively sufficient for those they are trying to convince, they have made another claim and the process of burden of proof repeats.
This is why I object to the argument that NLife and other sites should report certain claims. The burden of proof may have been met for the ones making the claims, but not for others, and those making the claims can’t simply stack another claim that it has to validate their first point. It’s not how logic and reasoning work.
One last point because I think there is often confusion about this. Saying I am not convinced about X, isn’t the same as saying X isn’t true. I see people using words like “made up” and “dismissed”, but not being convinced your claims are true is not necessarily others saying your claims are false.
@Kalmaro I’m sure Bigfoot enthusiasts can say much the same thing. They have pictures, videos, witnesses, tv shows, etc. So why doesn’t the media report every time there is a Bigfoot sighting? Because the claims don’t meet the burden of proof required by standards of journalism.
Claiming NLife has a duty to report on specific issues you feel are valid simply isn’t how journalism works. I can acknowledge you feel there are issues, I can also acknowledge you believe you have proof, but I and clearly many gaming sites, are not convinced by your conclusions.
Keep in mind I am not claiming the game has no issues, I think most if not all games have issues. But the claim of “lying” from Gamefreak is a very nebulous accusation that would need a lot more than information provided from anonymous hackers and opinions to carry any real weight. It’s the problem with many claims that aren’t concrete, they are very easy to make, and very hard to properly backup,
@Mogster That’s not how journalism works. Journalists have no obligation to investigate every random accusation made by random individuals. If they did, news would constantly be filled with conspiracy theories. You feeling something has validity does not make it so and it’s silly to call it unethical simply for not being convinced your assertions have any weight.
@Kalmaro I mean, I’ve read the reddit posts and simply have not been convinced. It certainly isn’t the only thing I am not convinced about, things like flat earth theory has it’s supports who believe they have compelling proof and it’s failed to convince me of it’s validity as well, nor would I call scientific journals shills for not giving them any acknowledgement.
I’m not necessarily even saying your wrong, I’m just haven’t been persuaded you are right, and you may not be able to. Furthermore, I am not convinced I would be particularly bothered if some of the claims were proven beyond a reasonable doubt to be true.
In the end I’m afraid this might just be one issue where it may not be possible for you to see eye to eye with those on the other side of the debate, and this isn’t due to any malicious intent to silence you, it’s just the nature of this particular subject.
@Kalmaro See, I question the seeking acknowledgment, I see the desire for capitulation and agreement. Your statement of being lied to, I don’t agree and have not been convinced of this, so why should I or anyone else view this as legitimate? I understand that for you and some others you feel you are correct in this matter, but hopefully you can understand that others, including the sites, have not been convinced by your claims and thus are unable to feel obligated to give them any credence. While this may feel like a dismissal of opposing viewpoints, it’s simply the reality of not being able to entertain every assertion made without believing there is merit.
@Kalmaro I guess I’m confused what you mean by “acknowledged”. Almost every article written about S&S makes a caveat about the controversies surrounding the games. Beyond that there are a lot of claims by various posters, but I hardly see it’s any gaming sites job to report on every claim made by every poster regardless of overall validity. Writers who have played the games have flat out rejected certain assertions made, and others have noted issues and simply take differing degrees of concern over how those affect their enjoyment.
I’m sorry you feel betrayed and frustrated, but I don’t really see how beating this dead horse anymore does anything beyond spreading frustration and negativity to those that don’t agree with your stance.
@Kalmaro I guess some may be wondering how many times certain posters are going to explain why they are not going to buy it. At some point the flooding of every comments section with the same assertions loses any possibility of producing positive discussion and just becomes tedious.
Not saying you don’t have the right, it’s NLife’s site to decide the rules, but those of us that have heard the same negativity repeated again and again, and are either not bothered by specific “issues” or don’t agree with the claims may wish to move on and have new discussions about something we enjoy.
@FrowningCoach I think there is sometimes a fine line between hate and criticism. Generally though, I consider criticism something with at least some objective merits that avoids bald assertions. Criticism can be quite productive. The opposite then are fallacious assertions, making statements with little to nothing backing them up. This usually is not productive. So, taking a specific issue with game mechanics can be an example of the former, while claiming a developer is lazy or lying is an example of the latter.
The downside with the debate surrounding this particular game has been how muddled the actual criticism has become with what I can only describe as the hate bandwagon.
@QueenKittenWrite what the heck are you talking about? I pointed out that calling players that disagree with you “part of the problem” is why people are calling you entitled. Do you understand that? You are asserting that there is a problem, and that anyone that disagrees with you is part of it. That is a bald assertion you have not backed up, the burden of proof is on you.
As for your other strange rant, my point was that if you are getting this upset over a subject, really any subject, it’s probably healthy to take a step back. You seem to be having some emotional issues with this topic, and that can be detrimental to your mental wellbeing.
I wish you well, hopefully you don’t let this continue to affect you so negatively.
@QueenKittenWrite Calling people “part of the problem” for disagreeing with you is why you are being called out as entitled. Reviews are in, people love it, maybe it’s time for you to find a different franchise to follow if it bothers you this much?
@Aquamine-Amarine Criticism is a good thing, and can be quite productive. I’ve seen very little criticism about S&S. Instead what we have seen have been accusations and assertions, such as Game Freak “lying” or being “lazy”. That isn’t productive, nor is something demonstrable.
@Kalmaro I just don’t see a thread dedicated to negativity towards the game as very convincing “evidence”, with clips and such being fairly suspect as there is little to no information where or how they have been collected from a game not yet released. Most of the reddit thread is just more assertions, which again, anyone can make.
@Kalmaro I have checked the link. The videos struck me as questionable at best, as not only is the game not currently out, but we have no clue about the context of the clips, ie: what settings were enabled, what version of the game are they from, etc. Heck, I quite enjoy Witcher 3, but if I wanted to portray it negatively, it wouldn’t be hard to collect a few grainy clips of occasional bugs, or to create a situation were issues occur.
@Kalmaro I won’t speak for anyone else, but personally my desire to purchase the game has nothing to do with not caring “about the warnings”. Rather I simply have not seen much to suggest the game won’t be good if not great. Sure we have some posters making assertions, such as accusations against Game Freak, but anyone can make assertions, and I haven’t seen any convincing evidence to back up any of the claims. If you make a claim, you are saddled with the burden of proof, and in my opinion that hasn’t been remotely met.
@Heavyarms55 We’ve seen it before, some things just become popular to hate. Can’t do much about it other than to recognize the vocal minority online is generally a pretty small demographic and won’t really affect the end product for the rest of us.
Looks awesome! Great graphics, exciting looking battle animations, I just hope the raids are as good as the sound as that will likely be my bread and butter for replayability.
@QueenKittenWrite I’d be very surprised if S&S’s sales took any significant hit. The negative press is almost exclusively about toxic fans, with the majority of posts about the game on major sites being either positive or mater-of-fact posts about new information from the developers. Heck, Amazon has several times run out of preorders and listed the game as unavailable for a period of time. It’s not the first time a game had a reaction from a vocal group online, Let’s Go received its share of hate and still did quite well.
@Crockin You almost wonder if some people have ever played a sequel to a game before. Things get cut and changed all the time, and I’ve never heard players feel so entitled to the developer informing them of everything altered prior to release.
I’ve only ever played Overwatch on a Switch and it seems good to me. Perhaps as a comparison I might notice something lacking, but as a stand-alone game I have no issues.
Sounds great as expected! Can’t wait to get both versions and dive in. Really looking forward to the wild and the multiplayer raids, the gyms are always my least favourite part of Pokémon games.
@Sabroni while it’s technically free, the game is structured in such a way that if you don’t have specific characters and equipment, you won’t be able to compete in rankings, nor will you be able to unlock all stars in later stages that require high scores. That’s a pretty big portion of the game that is locked behind a recurring paywall.
The game was enjoyable enough for being a free ios Mario Kart. However, now that my free gold pass has expired, the game seems sort of self-defeating. You need specific characters to advance and unlock resources for a chance to get those same specific characters you need. Resources are insanely limited even with the gold pass, without it, there really isn’t much you can do for free.
@SpacedDuck single player was a bit of a chore. Most players seemed to do what I did and jumped right into multiplayer, playing through the campaign sporadically in between the much more enjoyable modes. The multiplayer on the other hand was a lot of fun, it was just far too short as less than a week and I had pretty much all the best gear available.

Well, I guess it’s not any dumber than getting “Gamefreak Lied” trending on Twitter. What a farce.
