A brand new trailer has been released for Pokémon Sword and Shield, revealing two brand new monsters in the process.
You can see all of the action unfold for yourself above; the two new Pokémon can be seen at the 0:23 and 0:48 marks although they only appear for the briefest of moments. At present, no additional information on these two designs - such as their names or typing - has been revealed.
We have some clearer images of them for you below (thanks, Serebii):
This would appear to be the final trailer set to be released for the upcoming games, as indicated by its title on YouTube. We imagine a western release of the trailer could be on its way shortly.

Woo much hype! Only 4 days to go!!!!
Leaks already confirmed these two, if you were monitoring them.
But more pressing is that datamining of the game has begun and a bombshell has been uncovered.
It's not just Pokémon that have been cut, entire moves have been cut, a very large number of them.
Notable cuts include Hidden Power, Return, Frustration, and Pursuit, and there are dozens more cut (not counting Z-moves and Partner Pokémon moves from Let's Go)
I find this particularly insulting because they were never upfront about this.
The second one looks like an evolution to Mr. Mime
@RupeeClock I feel like it is assumed if that many Pokémon are removed moves will be missing too
@Glenka It is, the names Mr.Ryme
@Brutchie-bear
I wouldn't say so, as there are some very questionable move removals such as Hidden Power, one of the most important moves in meta due to adding coverage to Pokémon that lack it.
Even simple moves like Bubble have been removed, which is a common weak-water type move for low level water types.
I don't care what anyone says, the music has me hyped
Man, this looks so awesome.
A find this iteration refreshing. For me, having Pokemon that are unique to each game makes the region more special, while if you can have any Pokemon in any region, it just seemed like the same thing over and over. I'm really liking the changes they have done to the game, though I know that is unpopular opinion
@RupeeClock they actually don’t need to be upfront about those moves since it is inconsequential. They will never be able to evolve these games without throwing out old content to make sure the newest game/games moving forward are balanced and polished. keeping thousands of Pokémon and moves intact as is forever would eventually be A task so cumbersome and expensive that the game would not perform well financially or technically. To expect that is absolutely insane
Mr. Rime is the unholy amalgamation of hell's fury and humanity's fears. You will WISH to meet regular Mr. mime in a dark alley, instead of this ungodly hellspawn.
@Crockin
It is not inconsequential, because Pokémon that can be imported from previous games will now be forced to forget moves that cannot be used.
Hidden Power's removal is going to have an enormous negative impact on the competitive scene.
@RupeeClock
They should have cut stealth rock.
(Hidden power being cut is not that bad, it was mostly used by those who get their teams by hacking)
@Bolt90,
Only unpopular with the minorities, the masses will love this game to bits.
@Bolt90 Exactly. If you want all the old Pokemon just go play all those old games. Each region should be unique with brand new Pokemon. Suggesting otherwise is like going on Safari to Africa and being angry there are no pigeons sitting on a replica of Nelsons Column.
@RupeeClock I dunno, I dont expect other sequels for things to keep everything from previous games the way Pokemon has held on to some of its content. For the longest time the inclusion of some moves and Pokemon felt more obligatory than necessary, pretty much being in games just because they exist. Game Freak already struggle developing games, having to put in a bunch of nigh useless content too for the sake of it probably didnt help.
As a more close comparison, Digimon games rarely have all the Digimon. Nobody complains, they just have fun with what is there because theres still so much to choose from.
As a long time Pokemon fan as well, this all seems a bit whiny.
@RupeeClock Do you have a source for this information? I have been all over the Sword and Shield leak Reddit page and have seen nothing about "hundreds," of moves being cut.
@RupeeClock right, but if these competitive players purely want to play with old Pokémon and moves, can they not still do just that in the old games? The cool thing about sword/shield is that they are more or less a clean break and a step in the right direction towards the majority complaint that the series formula has become stale. The whole dexit thing is a very small and vocal community.
@Indielink
https://twitter.com/Kaphotics
Accidental hyperbole, it's 144 moves cut total, but a large number of them are z-moves and partner Pikachu/Eevee moves.
Sorry, getting a bit swept up.
Again, frustrated that Game Freak had not been up front that moves are also being cut. These are not trivial cuts either, they remove moves from returning Pokémon.
no Nidoran? i still bought it. How odd that Let's Go series is now the more pure pokemon experience outside of how you catch them.
Still amazes me they are not officially announcing the starter evolutions. That's the only pokemon I'd want to see of the ones announced so you can pick your starters. I'm glad I checked the leaks for those at least, since I would not have liked what I was going to choose I think based on just the base starter.
@w00dm4n how so?
@RupeeClock As a competitive player, Hidden Power was stupidly unintuitive, encouraged hacking, and stacked the metagame in favor of special attackers, most of whom gained perfect coverage through it. I'm not in the slightest bit upset that it's gone.
I'm more upset that Stealth Rock is still around.
@RupeeClock are you normally easily insulted?
The only moves of any real consequence being removed are Hidden Power and Return. The rest were pretty irrelevant, barely used, or just differently-named clones of other moves. Nobody is going to miss Grasswhistle.
Hidden Power had many problems that others have explained. Return, while a decent filler, was never exciting.
They need to put me in the game and then everyone would be Happy. Hehe
@RupeeClock While I think GF should have been more upfront, I think it is also absolutely insane that this kind of culling hadn't happened sooner. Thankfully the only competitive moves removed were Hidden Power and Pursuit, and honestly I think HP should have been removed ages ago.
One the plus side, the datamine also showed us an additional 100+ mons more than we thought there would be.
@Crockin it followed Yellow along for the entire game. The Trainer battles were great. Only downside was how you caught Pokemon and the pokedex didn't have all the updated baby and evolutions of the Kanto Pokemon. I actually caught all 153 Pokemon. I didn't finish the 153 specialized trainer battles though.
I share Lapras's concern.
@Ashunera84
I would say that the situation is adding insult to injury, because we didn't expect moves to be cut.
A proper impact analysis needs to be done as well, but one of the weirdest cases observed is that Vespiquen is in Sword/Shield, but one of its signature moves Heal Order has been removed.
@Indielink
Yes, that's the part that hurts, that they weren't upfront about it.
And I can absolutely appreciate that the longer the series go on, the harder it becomes to maintain all of the Pokémon, moves, and abilities featured.
The series is at a breaking point that they either need to take longer to produce the games, or massively overhaul their development process to accommodate these requirements.
@Indielink Do you have a source for that? It would be great if the Dex were bigger than the original leaker revealed!
@w00dm4n I guess I still don’t understand what you mean by let’s go being a more “pure” experience. Sword and shield has the old capture mechanic intact, plus hundreds more monsters to catch while more or less following the same formula
https://www.reddit.com/r/SwShLeaks/comments/dusw88/below_is_a_post_about_pok%C3%A9mon_dump_this_is_the/
@Crockin but it's missing moves,mega evolutions and nidorans. i guess that's why every one is losing their minds.
Let's Go still had all three of those.
I can't wait. Haven't played a pokemon game since Sun. Day 1 for me!
And I've avoided all the leaks!
@w00dm4n it’s crazy to me that people are as upset as they are over something that is beyond trivial. It was a cool gimmick while it lasted, but it’s time to move on. If they are really that passionate about keeping their old Pokémon And moves the way they are for competing, they can still do that in any of the old games, problem solved.
And let’s go is very limited compared what this game is offering.
@Crockin Wow someone with some actual sense for once
@RupeeClock heal order is just another name for recover, and is kind of a perfect example of where pruning should happen. If Vespiquen doesn't get a replacement, I would understand a mild annoyance, but I can't imagine it makes a meaningful difference in the end.
Since I kept complaining about it... Thanks NL!
The Thumbnail and title were totally spoiler free, please keep doing this!
And my... that's one hyping trailer, it almost made me forget all my worries for the upcoming games.
Wow... That moment when the gym leaders went slowly into the arena and the fast pacing clips in the end of the trailer were really well done. Just that makes me more excited to play the game than I thought I would be
applauses
Monsieur Hercule Mimerot?
@Crockin You almost wonder if some people have ever played a sequel to a game before. Things get cut and changed all the time, and I’ve never heard players feel so entitled to the developer informing them of everything altered prior to release.
I keep getting adverts on this site for a site called Techno Drone UK who have Pokemon Sword listed for £33.42 inc delivery which sounds far too good to possibly be true. Can anyone here vouch for them?
@RupeeClock
Wow. It just never stops getting worse.
@Maelwolf
Entitlement is a keyword these years...
As exhausting as the debating on this game has been, I will point out that there is precedence of the series forcing players to experience new Pokemon of the new region before having access to their old ones. So it isn't like there weren't ways of having players play through the game and experience just the new Pokemon without the need of cutting off Pokemon. I say that as not necessarily complaining about anything having been cut. Just that there is a precedence for having the best of both worlds
@RupeeClock If you're going to post leaks in the comment section, it would be preferable if you would use spoiler bars.
Especially in the week up to launch, people really don't wamt to see leaks in a comment section about a trailer. Thanks!
@Matthew010
Fair enough, I felt this was substantiated due to the removal of significant content that was not announced or disclosed prior to release.
@RupeeClock I don't think people would've minded so much if you'd said something small and insignificant like "Pidgey got cut" (which I don't actually know), but something larger and people start to get annoyed.
Thanks for understanding!
@Bolt90 My thoughts exactly! I get bored seeing a bulbasaur over and over again.
@RupeeClock I can see why you're annoyed with the removal of certain moves but surely they have also added new ones? I'm not asking you to tell me exact new move names or what they do but just a clarification that they also have new moves in these games
Still no official starter evolutions
I like the new Pokemon that they've done for this game, but I'm not finding the game itself $60 appealing at the moment. I will be anticipating the release and will be looking for streams to make an informed purchase or skip the games. The biggest issue I have is the Wild Area, both in terms of presentation and gameplay. The area they've chosen to highlight a lot for this game looks like the area that cuts the most corners. I was pausing this trailer a lot and I think at most I saw 3 wild Roggenrola. Most were just shots of a single Pokemon roaming in the large area, and that just makes the whole area feel empty. I did like that bike event though in the Wild Area, and do hope when I see streams that there is plenty of that if the Pokemon are sparsely appearing. The overall trailer is solid beyond that, and, for anyone sold on the game, definitely hype filled.
Wait, there's a balloon popping bike minigame? I am sold.
@Bolt90 me, starting Moon after beating Blue: "so many fancy new Pokemon species must await ahead..."
A legion of wild caterpies and rattatas later: "er, so many MORE fancy new species must await... further ahead..."
Hi!
Does anyone know (from experience from past games) if you can choose “girl” hairstyles when you’re a boy in the game? Asking for a friend.
Thank you!
@Justifier got half a box of hidden power hidden ability roserade i bred myself... and that's after a givaway i did
@Ashunera84 i use grass whistle on leafeon in desperate situations
@ancientlii sure, but would sing or sleep powder not work similarly in its place?
@Indielink it showed 35 most of the data mine were form sprites like all of silvally's, alcreamie's, gender differences, and gigantamaxes... also gender differences of gigantamaxes
@Ashunera84 maybe if it learned those but there are still different properties between those moves like working past substitute, overcoat, grass types, and activating sap sipper.
@ancientlii Yeahhhh I was looking at it again a couple minutes ago and realized. Still an improvement.
@RupeeClock Just more and more reasons not to buy this watered down Generation. I'll be shocked if this game breaks 10 mil, I let think it's looking like a 3-5 mil due to all the negative press and fan frustration.
@RupeeClock I figure because of the backlash of Pokémon being removed they feared the greater backlash removing moves would cause.
@RadioHedgeFund Honestly, I wonder if a way GF could answer some of the worries about pokemons might not be to take a leaf from whatever it is they had started to do during the late years of the 3DS:
Which is to say, actually re-releasing the classic games as they were but now updated for the infrastructure of stuff like Pokemon Bank/Home.
I mean, Pokemon Crystal is STILL one of the current 3DS eshop best-sellers these days because of it I suspect.
Though I might be also saying this because in Japan, I saw Square Enix do exactly that with Dragon Quest Monsters "Retro" recently where they literally ported the GBC original Dragon Quest Monsters "as is" with the biggest change being added functionality/UI stuff (such as new minimap functions) in the borders provided the emulator-like interface of the game.
And I'd really like that to his the west on Switch as a huge DQ fan but now in hindsight could see it applied to Pokemon considering Blue/Green/Yellow and Gold/Silver/Crystal's precedents on the 3DS' own eshop now.
@JMR_Alden I can imagine why it might be something uneasy for a local who actually experiences it.
To a degree though I have to say it almost make it kind of fitting that the villains team this time around IS toxic sports fans hooligans in a fashion?
Though admitedly it'd probably be a saniticized take compared to the real thing :/
@QueenKittenWrite I’d be very surprised if S&S’s sales took any significant hit. The negative press is almost exclusively about toxic fans, with the majority of posts about the game on major sites being either positive or mater-of-fact posts about new information from the developers. Heck, Amazon has several times run out of preorders and listed the game as unavailable for a period of time. It’s not the first time a game had a reaction from a vocal group online, Let’s Go received its share of hate and still did quite well.
@Maelwolf Honestly I feel like it'l still do solid in the mainstream and the biggest impact will just be subset of the fans finally cycling out for other things and perhaps only then temporarily.
Like, the fact it's a costlier game(being on Switch rather than 3DS) than previous titles WILL probably mean lesser day one sales at first sight(but potentially still more profit from the higher pricetag at the end of the day, who knows), but it'll also likely be one of the evergreen titles that'll thus just.... continue selling throughout the year until THEN it reaches truly massive numbers.
So in a way, it'll still be the "refresh" hoped by Game Freaks because it might still end up selling a tons of copies(I mean this is a franchise that does benefit from tons animes/movies/merch to promote and be promoted by) AND sections of the grognard fanbase they feel are increasingly the hardest to please, in term of adding new mechanics whilst also retaining everything as much as possible that was before may, finally move out.
Like I have my own mixed feelings on the whole thing and the fact Home still sound so vague("Import your old pokemons to Home, but then for what...?") but at the same time I'm not blind enough to think it'll be the "end" of Pokemon as a franchise. As while it will be "the end" for some fans for whom it might indeed be the last game... in general the franchise itself will still have to be seen as still doing well, for itself.
Horrible design.
Does anyone know what that floating Rotom lookalike is? Is it a Rotomdex like the one in Gen VII?
why I'm buying this awful game I still don't get it!
@AlexSora89,
Or better depending on which way you look at things.
The 15th cannot come fast enough. So
Excited to explore Galar and play a more traditional Pokémon game. I did enjoy Let’s Go but found zero replay ability in that game.
@RupeeClock If you've been paying attention to the leaks then you'll find out that many of these changes were due to their being a "Meta" in the first place. Especially moves like Hidden Power to even Meta Pokemon themselves (Absol, Slowking, Slowbro,etc.). I'm not saying I'm pro removing them or anything, far be it (they removed some of my favorites like Magnezone, Zoroark, and even Elektross). But I can Sort of see why they'd remove them, and to be fair there's a lot of "old meta" still there (Tyranitar, Gengar, Noivern, and Scrafty(not sure if Scrafty is still in there or not. I hope he is since I used him a ton too.)). Just be happy we may or may not still have moves like Earthquake and Night Slash.
@JMR_Alden If it makes you feel better the whole games supposed to be UK inspired hence the football craze for their respective gyms. However, there could be non-football like stadiums as well. Just remember not to let your opinion of those hooligans get in the way of you enjoying a game that you like.
@Reigestugatensho
Yeah, at the time of the data mining news breaking, no real impact or meta analysis had yet taken place, with just the more prevalent changes being highlighted.
If the move removals are indeed to stifle or shake up the current meta, that's worrying, because it's like removing staples or hallmarks of the battle system.
I'm one of those people who think that pokemon was getting bloated so the thought of pokemon being cut down to a few quality picks and then those getting a focus via regional variants or some new evolutions definitely excites me. I'm very much looking forward to this game and to future games if this is their new course.
I absolutely was jumping in my seat this morning watching these! I can't wait for Friday!
But on another note, the Japanese trailer was so much better than the English one, why didn't they just show the Japanese one abroad? There's very little Japanese in it and even I could translate it in a few minutes...
@johnvboy
I have a legit, shiny Mew in my older games that I won't be able to transfer to Sword and Shield because those games are programmed to just accept the Mew that comes from the Poké Ball Plus.
Tell me if you have any faith left in the franchise at this point.
this game will definitely sell well to bring in newer fans, but its definitely a shame to cut out so much of what theyve been building up all these years
@Heavyarms55 My thoughts exactly! Like, the music starting at 0:54 had me so pumped and the way it matched the atmosphere of the scenes shown. I need a soundtrack stat!!!
@AlexSora89 Pokemon Home isn't even out yet, how could you possibly know that? From all appearances, any Pokemon that exists in Sw/Sh will be transferable via Home if you bring it all the way forward. The only time to my knowledge you could have obtained a legit shiny Mew would be from the gen 3 event - but it could have been done. So you should be able to bring it forward. At worst, you might have to delete a move.
hidden power electric wishiwashi with assault vest allowed me to beat kyogre during the rainbow rocket campaign. in fact my wishi beat kyogre single handedly. so these changes will hurt me and my ultra sun wishiwashi, but i guess as long as kyogre is not in the game i wont need hidden power electric wishi. i also wish they removed stealth rock or at least nerfed it.
@AlexSora89,
Sorry fella I just do not have the hate for these games others have, for me it's not that much of a biggie the dex has been cut, I also like the artstyle and look of the new Pokemon too.
@Heavyarms55
Got it in three months' worth of (difficult) online trades, to be completely honest. But I double/triple checked if it was a legit Pokémon. Turns out, it was.
As for how I know... well, datamining.
@johnvboy
The graphics are definitely not on par with other Switch games, easily outclassed by fellow Nintendo software. Never been a graphical snob, but trees and texture look like straight out of a Wii game at best. Blurring and pixellating the character models with outlines results in something that wouldn't look out of place in Alola.
The art style, on the other hand, is flat-out gorgeous. I have to state this out loud, because I'm always willing to give credit where credit is due. Some designs aren't that good, and some returning Pokémon could have been chosen better (Stunfisk? Like, really?) but, truth be told, most of the roster is alright when you don't look at the exclusions.
That said, I'd have been fine with the graphics as well, if it wasn't for the cut Dex. Almost total deal breaker, like, 95%. The remaining 5% are the odds of me forking over money for an actual new copy of the game.
@AlexSora89 Well that's pretty awesome. I do hope it's legit if you went to so much effort!
I hate to say it though, but it is possible to hack in a Pokemon that hits all the right details. Especially ones from older games. People know how to do that.
Not saying yours isn't legit, just that it's not impossible to fake one that looks totally legit.
@Heavyarms55
Well, as Homer Simpson says... "Ehh, close enough".
(Time and Punishment, Treehouse Of Horror V)
So yeah, the way I obtained was by means of a heart attack during a GTS withdraw. The blue Mew since traveled to Unova, Kalos (and by proxy, New Hoenn) and finally Alola. Hate to say it, but it's stuck in there... until either a non-Pokéball-Plus, Mew-compatible Switch game comes out or Pokémon Bank is inevitably discontinued, whichever comes first.
It's... not easy to swallow. We can't take Pokémon Home as any kind of warranty, given the drop of National Dex support threw everything we knew out of the window.
@RupeeClock Pokémon “meta” is a minuscule part of the franchise and those games were never intended to for competitive multiplayer in the first place.
@SmaggTheSmug
That must be why they host a global Video Game Championships each year then.
@AlexSora89 So... Sword and Shield? Why do you think that the only Mew allowed in Sw/Sh will be the Mew from the Poke-Ball plus? Bank is planned to be integrated into Pokemon home, and from there, Pokemon of any species that exist in Sw/Sh will be transferable from Home to Sw/Sh.
Unless they've made an announcement somewhere to the contrary? If you've heard otherwise could you point me to where you heard it?
Bank will probably be discontinued when the 3DS online servers suffer the same fate as the DS and Wii. At that point we'd have to decide if we want to bring our Pokemon forward into Home or leave them on the 3DS titles forever - unless they released a way for the 3DS to talk to the Switch directly via local wireless somehow.
@AlexSora89,
I suppose I never look at Nintendo games to be graphical showcases, although yes they could heve pushed the hardware more, but the artstyle has got me hooked and I think these games will look great in motion.
I just get a little annoyed when some YouTubers showing original alpha footage are slating the visuals, the game has come on a lot since it's first reveal, and although similar in style these look a lot better than the 3DS titles.
@RupeeClock Not ignoring that part is not the same as it being huge.
Tournament players are not the target audience of Pokémon.
@SmaggTheSmug
That must also be why they regularly host online competitions with special rule sets.
https://www.serebii.net/sunmoon/onlinecompetitions.shtml
https://www.serebii.net/ultrasunultramoon/onlinecompetitions.shtml
@RupeeClock No, that’s why Pokémon doesn’t have a tournament mode by default and the trailers are focused on exploration and catching new Pokémon rather than having patch notes like Smash Ultimate E3 trailer.
The fact that competitive Pokémon exists is a fluke, not a design.
@Heavyarms55
Datamining happened. I'm currently crossing my fingers for it to turn out to be a hoax.
@SmaggTheSmug
That must be why they have battle facilities or modes in a majority of games where you can test your mettle against teams of varying builds and strategies with an assortment of special rules and conditions.
And it's not like that there have not been patches to fix bugs with battling.
@AlexSora89
Data mining and early access to the games are revealing some pretty damning things, this may be shaping up to be one of the weakest entries in the main series.
https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/dv438w/complete_list_of_all_problems_known_so_far_in/?sort=new
@johnvboy
Fair enough.
Most of the alpha graphics are here to stay, though. We'll find out a few days later down the line.
@RupeeClock
It never stops getting worse.
No open world was worth this, by a long shot.
