I'm the first to understand the concept of a review being just someone's opinion, but I can't help noticing little capacity to cover flaws with the "cloak of charity" it seem to earn on other aspects of the game. I read some pretty genuine positive elements illustrated by the reviewer, yet the score it got and thus the overall bottom-line does not really reflect that.
In short: reads as a six, got a four. I know, review scores are so passé, so lacking in it's ability to convey a message. We, as the reader, should be doing this or that when it comes to them, but still they keep on appearing. As long as they are there people will react, and it occurs quite often the overall sentiment of the review does not seem to match the score.
I'm not a fan of the 2DS, as anticpiated upon it's reveal I've seen more games with less 3D then before. Splitting the an audience by devices that differ in functionality is never a good decision in console / handheld gaming imo. They should have kept focus on the original 3DS as the somewhat cheaper alternative compared to letting die a slow death by stopping supply.
@Daemonite What makes this an "anti-homosexual" game? So every game which does not include the option to play in a wheelchair is automatically considered an person-with-disability game? I get it that the developers should have included this, but I also get it comes from an oversight and cultural differences being an original Japanese production. That's FAR away from being anti-anything.
This is by the way the reason why your beloved game only released in Japan takes so long to get over here or maybe never: cultural divide. A perfectly normal thing in Japan causes a ****storm elsewhere. Or the other way around of course.
@Kyloctopus Controversy sells. The game has reached audiences it would have never reached. I personally see it as an oversight rather then some scandal followed by people not willing to be associated with the game or Nintendo.
I hate to say this, but I doubt it beats "Retro City Rampage" on the Vita, which is a very impressive version. Still going to pick this up on my 3DS XL though
I'm not a fan of 3DS XL editions that take a black or a white 3DS XL and slap a shiny cover on it. They should be like the Zelda 3DSXL edition, different all around from the regular 3DS XL's.
Great article, until I read this: "Irving's gaming habits don't seem to have hurt his performance". I don't likethe insinuation, why would his gaming remotely have any affect on his ability to play sports?
@Dyl_73 You got it a bit off mate. In my opinion reviews should be done completely objectively not taking anything into mind, not it's price, not it's target audience. The reader of the review is more than capable of looking at the review from the angle he or she chooses. Is it good enough for me? Is it good enough for my kid who is a heavy fan of the IP? Is the price justifiable for myself? These are questions only you can answer, not a reviewer.
I personally will not let my buying decision be based only on what a review thinks. I'll note what he said, look at the game and decide whether it is either good enough for me or for my son. Simply put 2/10 or 4/10's don't scare me off if I like the concept of the game and the information about it.
I've somewhat translate this into "will not publish traditional Nintendo games on smartphones and tables, but will establish their presence on these platforms to promote Nintendo devices and software".
The western industry should take notes, this is how to do it. Maybe one thing we shouldn't be forgetting, I think, correct me if I'm wrong, this takes rather great courage to do so in the Japanese culture where failures are taken more harshly and far more personal.
@Peach64 Well regardless of what you think, with the current market conditions and the fierce competition of the mobile gaming platforms eating away casual gaming interest, I think the 3DS and it's sales is still a, relatively speaking, a phenomenon. Pressure and controversy at Nintendo should be directed at the WiiU, the 3DS is remarkable and is performing excellent in my opinion, though with the disadvantage of having had a very slow start. I don't care what the DS did in it's time, there were no millions of smartphones and apps out there, nor did we have tablets, that's some very serious competition, we must stay realistic.
@Peach Special read for your mate "As we've argued before, to compare this generation's handheld with the last and simply say "3DS isn't doing well" is extremely narrow-minded, and disregards a sea-change in the respective marketplaces"
@steamtrain You call deviations to topics such as your local town, your choice to not get a car and whatnot relevant to the debate ? You should join your country's parliament, teach them a thing or two on filibustering. Lol, I'm done with you.
@Kolzig Well said. QFT "Nothing is more useless than a region lock in 2014. The world is one small place, and does not need invisible walls to stop people from enjoying other people's creations.". Our local philosopher @steamtrain may have a different opinion dragging irrelevant notions into the mix; smoke and mirrors.
@steamtrain You give yourself to much credit, I'm not ventilating my frustration on you. Don't feel so because I have a different opinion than you on culture, where I live culture is not about imposed limitation, period.
@steamtrain That's a load of nonsense. How a developer designs games shouldn't be dictated by region locking. Culture has never been bound by some artificial technical imposed limitation. Don't make me laugh.
If it wasn't for my huge collection I'd switch to US and import a US 3DS XL. Sick and tired of EU getting the shaft, I understand due to all the countries with different languages and laws it's a challenge to release, but choose to release to UK only and give the opportunity to European people who live in 2014 and speak and understand English to buy it in the UK.
Mobile platforms is no place for Mario & Luigi to roam, I hope Nintendo sticks to their guns, they are just as charming when it comes to software and last but not least their hardware. Don't want to see that going away. I still regret, even today, Sega is not in the picture anymore as a hardware manufacturer.
If failure is not an option, companies will take less and less risks in already an industry that is known today for playing safe and endless iterations of what works. Nintendo's ideas and policies are not always wonderful, but they do take risks and really innovate (motions controls on the Wii, auto-stereoscopy and the concept of streetpass on the 3DS, touch and dual screen on the DS, Gamepad and streaming on the WiiU, etc).
My weekend is going to be about Mario Party Island Tour (3DS), Skylanders: Swap Force (3DS) and Don King Boxing (DS) thrown into the mix because I'm a boxing fan and for some reason only got around to that game now, which btw is quite a decent first attempt on first person boxing by 2K Sports on the DS.
I don't think the resignation of Satoru Iwata isn't going to do any good, I hope they are now going for a lessons learned approach and turn-around the momentum.
In the end a "sales and financial projections" revision is changing previous expectations based on numerous aspects and circumstances. Who's to say the previous projections were realistic, maybe the truth of all this are unrealistic previous projections. It does not have to mean anything for the consumer, on the contrary, it motivates any company to do better and to stay on edge. A wake-up-call if your will, not to take consumer's money for granted.
I choose "definitely not", I have all the respect for people wanting these sales and all, but throwing out games at bargain prices like steam does on sales creating a community that doesn't buy at launch and does nothing but lure around for crazy sales isn't my idea of supporting the hard work and love developers have put in their creations.
I also say no to the throw-away-gaming culture coming over from the mobile gaming world.
And those wondering what's wrong with those that votes "definitely not", try to think long term instead of short term, you'll understand sooner or later that this isn't the way forward. Plenty of cheap attention-span-of-12-minute games to be had on the mobile stores, 4 million games with, granted, now and then a couple of true gems, but that's it. I may be getting old, but again, this just isn't the way forward.
After two days of playing, I found this to be a very fun game. Some remarkable platform gaming is to be found. I'm afraid the above review does take a bit to much into account how it compared to the console version, while it is clearly intended to be a standalone version.
I consider this a plus compared to just offering a mobile iteration of the console versions. Definitely an 8/10 in my book, maybe a 7/10 for this where the glass is half empty instead of half full.
Bought the 3DS version of Swap Force, my first Skylanders game. Bought Spyro's Adventure & Giants too at reduced pricing, never to late to start I guess. Quite handy the new Swap Force portal works with the previous two games.
Region-locking in this day and age is simply obsolete. Instead of finding ways to prohibit and secure there system and spending resources on it, they should embrace the demand for this desired functionality and legitimatize it. Really Nintendo, give people the freedom of choice of what version to buy for whatever reason.
Based on This Wikipedia quote, the European version is different from the US one which launched a year earlier: "the Wii U version also has exclusive cameos from characters and items from the Super Mario and Legend of Zelda games, which later returned in the European release of both Wii U and 3DS versions." I wonder what else is different.
After some weird delays such as Nintendo issuing a recall in the shops, it finally launched in Europe on 6 December 2013. Never played Scribblenauts and didn't knew what it's about, but after catching up, it does sound appealing.
@C-Olimar Crosstalk (ghosting) is associated with any application of stereoscopic 3D. It's just a 3DS issue and there is a lot of speculation as to the through cause of it. Also, not everyone perceives ghosting to the same effect, if at all. Ir can be caused by many factors, including physical depth from the screen, the viewing angle of the screen or the angle of the viewer's eyes, etc.
