Re: UK Charts: Top Three Receive Another Shake Up, But Mario Stands Firm

Littlejack

Uhhh not sure Sony are going to care too much about this chart placing for Helldivers 2.

https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2024/02/helldivers-2-is-blowing-through-estimates-around-1-million-sales-in-less-than-a-week

Seems like it's doing far better than was expected? In that context I don't really know if these charts, while interesting, are much of a bellwether for telling anything meaningful about overall performance really.

Re: Hang On, Competitive Pokémon Fans Are Liking Sword And Shield's National Dex Cut

Littlejack

@Octane Agreed. It comes to something when Pokken with 21 Pokémon has a wider spread of representation in serious competition than the mainline Pokémon did with its 800+. While I think it's too early yet to say how successful they have been I definitely see the logic.

Burning effigies over the national dex doesn't make sense to me. Doesn't affect competitive meaningfully, plenty of choice of good mon to catch during the storyline and you don't need to have gotten things from a million distributions/import legendaries across generations to complete the goddamn Pokédex. There's definite room for improvement but the Pokédex isn't the biggest issue going forward imo. They should focus on developing the wild area idea more and making the dungeons more complex again.

Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield Beats Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order To Claim Number One Spot (UK)

@Galenmereth "Don't tell other people their opinion is invalid when you haven't even played the game" Haha, so then are you agreeing that the angry minority who've spent every waking moment complaining since June should have maybe held fire until they played the game? Or are you just a massive hypocrite?

Also I find it hard to believe that you hate a game that much if you've played it 22 hours. That's like what? Half the time you've been awake since Thursday?

Re: Feature: Best Nintendo DS Games

Littlejack

Lot of people seem to be forgetting that even though it was a port, DS Chrono Trigger was the first version released of the game released in Europe. Ever.

(Yes, I am indeed still bitter about that.)

Point remains for some the DS was the first chance to play the game, barring importing etc.

Do I think it's a quintessential DS game? No. However it's a very special game indeed and often recognised as one of the all time greats; there's no shame in ranking below it. By the same logic are we going to disqualify mario kart 8 DX from the list of top switch games of all time when that conversation happens in a few years? I doubt it.

Re: Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid Morphs Classic Franchise Into A Fighting Game

Littlejack

Cross platform play, provided it works well, is an excellent idea for a fighting game. They generally don't have the largest active playerbases online so unifying them is a shrewd move. I hope more consider this approach going forward and for that reason alone it almost makes me want to give it a chance. However as others have said announcing this on the same day of the massively hyped MK11 reveal was either very brave or very foolish.

Re: Review: YIIK: A Postmodern RPG - EarthBound For A New Generation

Littlejack

Was this review supposed to be postmodern to match the theme of the game? Gold star to anyone who made it all the way through that. I got as far as "Records will spin and obey your commands to drop the needle" before I gave it up as a bad job. The only thing I got from what I read it is that the writer is really enthusiastic about the theme of the game. I can't say it helped me decide whether to buy it or not, sorry.

Re: Pokémon: Let's Go Absolutely Smashes It In The Japanese Charts, Switch Console Sales Skyrocket

Littlejack

@westman98 Do you have a source for these figures? The figures I saw on twitter, originally sourced from famistu, paint a slightly different picture.

Initial three day sales in japan:
X/Y: 1.2m from 24m install base (15.8%)
Omega/alpha: 1.5m from 16.6m (5%)
Sun/moon: 1.9m from 22m (8.6%)
Ultra: 1.2m from 24m (5%)
Let's go: 0.66m from 5.5m (12%)

source: https://twitter.com/serkantoto/status/1065187670211477504?s=19

From this it appears that in terms of results from the first three days, which is pretty much all we have to go on here, let's go has done proportionally better than everything other than XY since 2013.
That is despite being noticably more expensive, not a true mainline game and being aimed at a different market. You might expect that as increasingly more people embrace digital that online sales would be larger in the newer games as well. Now the lifetime sales might of course be a different story but it's fair to say it certainly hasn't bombed and those extra 150k switch units didn't just magically sell themselves for no reason.

Re: Review: Sid Meier's Civilization VI - Conquer The World On The Move In This Superb Port

Littlejack

@Balta666 10 hours is just a ballpark figure; as standard you play 500 turns but you can increase or decrease that amount. Of course that assumes that you don't achieve a military/science/religious victory before then or aren't defeated yourself. The game is designed to be very replayable, if it grabs you then you will play much more than just one game. Each you generate a new game you start with a different set of civs (whose behaviour is semi random), different continents and starting positions. Each Civ has its own strengths to play towards and how you approach the game can differ a lot depending on who you choose.

In terms of a campaign there isnt really one per se. There is a tutorial mode which leads you through starting a game with some additional early advice and a handful of specific scenarios. The magic of the main game is how you basically end up scripting your own story as you go. e.g. 'Peter the Great ambushes your outmost city with waves of archers whilst you are putting down a barbarian attack in the capital and now you won't rest until his bones are ground into dust'.

Re: Review: Sid Meier's Civilization VI (Switch)

Littlejack

@AcridSkull Of course. I have nothing else to base my opinion on after all. The bugginess of Civ V in multiplayer was a real momentum killer and I don't know if we'd have fared better with it removed. I assume Civ 6 is better for this? All I'm saying is that in practice for most people it's a feature that isn't going to be the main attraction, and for those for whom it is (the very dedicated) they will most likely already have Civ 6 with rise and fall installed anyway on PC.

Re: Review: Sid Meier's Civilization VI (Switch)

Littlejack

Indeed yes, losing multiplayer is a real loss here. After all who doesn't want to play against randoms in a turn based game that can take upwards of 10 hours to finish, when it's often quite clear who is going to win much, much earlier, and people generally ragequit
online at the drop of a hat? Sounds like a fun time to me. Even with friends I've found online civ a bit meh in the past; I tried playing multiple games of Civ V online with buddies and we never finished a single one (didn't help that the client crashed regularly either). You aren't missing much , it was very much built to be a single player game first and foremost. Seriously if you are after turn based online then I'd recommend you pick up Armello anyway instead; that game is properly balanced for online and is good fun to boot.

Anyway already into my third game and loving it; my horde of horsemen have just beaten back the Aztec advance across the continent and liberated Hattusa from their grasping paws. Now I can turn my attention to the belligerent and advanced Macedonians across the sea. Luckily for me the age of the Samurai has just dawned..

Re: Review: BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle (Switch)

Littlejack

The full planned roster is 40 characters. It was 20+20 dlc, after the outcry a couple of months back it's now 22+18 dlc. As is common for ArcSys one pack is free first couple weeks. The remaining 9 haven't been officially announced yet but data miners have released lists of who they think they are iirc.

Demo was fun but will probably stick to pokken. From my experience populations for EU regions in arc sysgames get low very fast and cross region netplay is usually awful. I'm taking that they didn't even bother releasing the demo in EU regions as a bad sign.
