It's getting harder and harder to make significant leaps in power with every generation, imo, and less sensible. For those bawling over how much graphics matter, stop treating Wii U as if it's falling back to 8-bit graphics and Sony and Microsoft's new consoles will be twice as powerful as their previous ones. IMO, Orbis and Durango will be more powerful than Wii U, but we'll barely notice it.
Also, it's hard to judge any new console's graphical capabilities at the beginning of its life. As developer's become more accustomed to the hardware, their better equipped to whip out stunning looking games.
@mastersworddude
I sincerely doubt that developers will be screaming about how Wii U isn't powerful enough for them to implement all their amazing ideas. "Oh my God, Wii U is a little less powerful than PS4096! Scrap that epic FPS, this system can barely handle Bejeweled."
Moderation of such a huge network will be hard. It's not hard to get past automated checkers. Just put spaces between letters, or swap some out for similar looking characters (a = @, s = $, etc.). Unless they start grouping characters together to weed out substitutes, ignoring spaces/periods when checking for bad words (except when part of valid words after checking with a dictionary), and more, automated censorship will be almost impossible.
Reviewing every comment is also costly, and takes time. My guess is that only graphical ones will be reviewed, while text will be put through complex automated processes (like that mentioned above) with the ability to ask for review if a comment without anything bad in it is accidentally being caught as something offensive. The ability to turn off moderation and view pending comments would also be useful for the older users. If graphical comments and the occasional text comment/flagged comments are too much, a limit could be placed on graphics.
So, what you're telling me, is that Nintendo failed to show off this and Game & Wario? If they had shown those two games off instead of spending the better part of the show talking about Nintendo Land, the presentation would've been way more exiting. D:
I was expecting Nintendo to pull off a more impressive presentation. Not much new information was given in the way of the system (pricing, release date) or the software (we already knew about everything presented). Still, the existing software looks solid (Paper Mario Sticker Star, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, NSMB2, NSMBU) and we did get some Pikmin 3 info, so the presentation wasn't too bad. Just average, IMO.
@Mercury9 The problem here, Mercury, is that it takes money to make games. Programmers, artists and musicians have to work their butts off to make the games you enjoy. During that period, they need financial backing. This isn't about making a sandwhich. It costs a crap load more than that. You'll get some of your money back by getting the game when you donate, and help them make the final product better. Don't want to donate, you don't have to.
However, I do see your point; I especially feel bad when I see what I feel are wastes of exorbitant sums of cash. Do you feel people are wasting their money when they could use it towards a better cause? This is the kind of project I dislike. Instead of being angry at the devs of CBK for wanting $20,000, look at that. They wanted $400,000 and they got pledged over THREE MILLION DOLLARS. And all the money will go to "making the game better." How nice it'd be if they could use the $400,000 for the game they asked for and do something nice for with the rest, instead of using seven times the amount of money they wanted. I wish KS would cap pledges.
This. People used to do this for the Wii's browser and DSi browser all the time.
@Wheels2050
No. It's not, really. There's a big difference between custom software and browser games.
@Dodger
It's a browser game. If the device has a web browser, chances are it will run. It's not exactly a new medium. Now, I'm not saying that there's no potential, but, it's not particularly exciting to me that I can play browser games on my 3DS. If I wanted to play games in a web browser, chances are I'd play them on a real computer without any of the limitations the 3DS's browser has.
Still, you do have some point in that anyone can do this. I can see that talented developers could make a fun little game in JavaScript that runs in the 3DS's browser.
Regardless of the lack of technical innovation, I still hope this goes somewhere. As for the graphics, keep in mind its programmer art. It can improve. Just get someone to make a few nice .gifs of the proper size, upload them in the correct spots and viola.
The problem is, is that whether or not Angry Birds would've been better as a DS game is up to personal taste. Me, I always found the iPhone's touch screen to be a little imprecise, especially with my fingers always obscuring the screen. For me, I think Angry Birds would've been a better game on the DS. You could place the slingshot controls on the bottom, and the action on the top, using the d-pad to scroll the screen sideways and zoom it in and out.
Whether or not it would SELL is another question, and what some people seem to love to confuse with the prior. No. I do not think Angry Birds would sell on the DS. The target demographic for DS games is different from that of the iPhone. The casual gamers that eat up iPhone games want clever little distractions from their daily lives, like Cut the Rope, Angry Birds, Canabalt and Jetpack Joyride. Those types of games will always excel on the iPhone, because it's just that; a smart-phone.
Slap iPhone games on the DS, retail or download, and they won't perform very well compared to on the iPhone. Aside from the probably inflated price that comes with the platform change, they just don't fit in with the very nature of the device itself. Also, the install base will almost always be lower for a dedicated gaming device than a smart-phone.
@theblackdragon My sentiments exactly. I find it can actually be almost insulting to call an easter egg, or trick, a glitch. If I developed a game and purposely put fun little secrets in for gamers to find, and gamers started calling them glitches, I'd be a little mad. IMO, you're essentially accusing a programmer's code of being poorly written, and that it doesn't account for all the variables, when you say his or her game has glitches in it. Although, glitches are pretty unavoidable in all forms.
A glitch is not just any trick which was intentionally programmed in. A glitch is the exploitation of faulty code. In your first set of examples, the code running the game acts as intended. The Warp Zones were placed there on purpose, either for gamers or developers. The areas themselves, and the way you access them, require nothing more than the normal gameplay mechanics. No jumping through walls needed. Same for Infinite 1-UPs.
The last group is not glitching by any means. It's called hacking. You know, that's why we call them hackers. The results of hacking are not the effects of solely the original code. If the code is already in the game, then that's not glitching either. The game was programmed to recognize a set of characters or button presses and alter the way it reacts. I press A, I fire a bullet. I press A, X, Y, B, X, Y, B, UP, DOWN and I get infinite bullets. See?
This whole thing has me confused. You're throwing every little tip, trick and hack together and calling them glitches. It makes no sense whatsoever. At least call them what they are. Basically everyone's going like this: "Oh look, that guy just accessed a secret area that the developers put in on purpose," or "Whoa, that dude is using infinite Mega Mushrooms online," and then replying with, "OMG, OMG, OMG GLITCH!!!!!"
I posted the roundtable and a translation (although you had to read it because it wasn't subtitled) and this has been in the Animal Crossing 3DS thread here for what? Two and a half to three months? For those following the AC community, this is mostly old stuff. xD
Anyways, still good to get an "official" and (slightly) more accurate version. Interestingly, between this and the old translation, this one reveals that there will be a shopping mall, since, IIRC, the translators had some trouble with the line covering that in the interview. Unless there's been a newer one since then. Can't wait to be able to play Animal Crossing on my 3DS.
Expect HEAVY SPOILERS below. Including much unlockable content.
The 8 bonus worlds are called Special worlds, with a "S" before the world number. Just unlocked them today. Yeah, they are remixes of the levels of the worlds they are based on. And once you get them... wow. Simply amazing. The Tanooki Suit gets a variant that can turn into a statue (separate power-up. Silver leaf, suit has red scarf like the original), and stuff such as the Poisonous Mushroom make a comeback. Only Mario title that beats out 3D Land as my favourite Mario game is Sunshine.
For those wondering about the length of the game, I got all the Star Medals and Golden Flags on the first 8 worlds in 9 hours (In one epic sitting according to my 3DS although I had a few breaks truth be told.). I took my time, but the average player should take around the same if they too take their time.
3D Land has bite sized levels, but they are packed with stuff, and there's a ton of them. I still have the 8 Special worlds, Luigi and 3 Stars left to get out of the 5 you can achieve. Only thing I'm a little sad about is not getting glittering stars by never dieing more than 5 times on one level, but that's my fault. After 100% completion (All star medals, all golden flags, Mario & Luigi clear for all stages) I think you unlock a final level ala Galaxy. 3D Land is definitely a reason to get a 3DS if you haven't already.

Mario, and specifically the Tanooki suit, are very popular, which is why they are being targeted. I find it somewhat comedic that everyone runs around screaming about PETA, saying they hate them, when in stark reality, they are supporting them by helping them reach their goal: to attract attention. They light a small fire, and the "firemen" pour oil on it burning down a forest. Basically, PETA is the same as your average troll.
Wiggler is a nice addition, but Honey Queen is just... odd. Why pick her over so many other characters? I second that E. Gadd would've been a better addition. Wigglers are generally pretty large, but given their varying sizes, I can understand how one got into a kart, but the Honey Queen? She's larger than some planetoids in Super Mario Galaxy! They'll have to make a new weight class for her, a special kart, and make her fill the whole screen for it to be somewhat logical. O_e

@HugoSmits Not one, not two, not three, not even four... but FIVE games? Holy. How do you even find time to eat, sleep, or... eh-hem, go the the mens' room, let alone come here? That is amazing. Talk about multitasking. The Megamind villian thing probably had you facepalm when you saw it. I know if I designed a character, and then watched a movie/played a a game awhile later with a really similar design, I'd just let my head fall into my hands and hold it there.
I think the fact it seems similar to Earthworm Jim etcetera to be a good thing. It doesn't really matter if the gameplay or character design is the most innovative thing or not, really. All that matters is if its fun or not, and it looks like it'll be a pretty fun game. I find when game developers take inspiration from other games, its a good thing. The best games are often made when a developer takes some basic concepts from another game, and adds to them, evolving them. In this way, games in general grow and evolve.
It looks like that's basically what you've done here. You've taken games in the vein of EJ, and mixed them together with existing one-button games such as One Button Bob and turned it up to eleven, if you know what I mean. OBB was decent, but this looks great. It must've been a lot of hard work to finish Flush. I can only imagine the relief and amazement you must get when you finally finish, or near completion of a game... and then with the whole lotcheck thing, the anxiety.
And then the anxiety again when reviews start coming out, and people start criticizing...
Got a copy. Will be playing it soon. I loved the first Jokers to death, so I'm sure I'll love this one. It's too bad we didn't get the Professional version, though. Maybe that would've elevated it to 10 stars.
People do not understand the problems with making a game suitable for online play. It isn't just a matter of "take the multiplayer, make it online. YAYZ!" @warioswoods comment seems to hit the nail on the head, for me. I think Nintendo really wanted, and needed, a strong title on the system to try and raise its sales. Congratulations Hugo. Must've been a lot of hard work. We gamers often forget the massive amount of work that goes into games, and indie developers like you have to be a one-man-band. I hope many, many people enjoy Flipper 2. :3
Something about Layton and Phoenix being in the same game feels... wrong. Just doesn't seem to click for me. Besides that, though, the game is looking good.
Astro Boy was a hidden gem. I spent forever playing ChuChu Rocket... I played most of the Megaman Battle Network games a few years back, and Advance Wars was always fun to play. Too many good GBA titles.
@WumboXpert I'd think if I got hit by a blue shell whilst in first-person, I'd get dizzy. Or upchuck my lunch. Or scream like a little girl in amazement.
@SuperMario4Ever Nice catch on the red 7 and Super Leaf! Also, there was an interview with series-producer Hideki Konno which showed Metal Mario and Lakitu as playable characters in action. Metal Mario's kart and glider turn into solid metal (which most here probably know), and Lakitu has a cute little kart made from a cloud! There will be 16 new tracks, and Wuhu Island will only have one massive lap instead of three.
It'd probably be a good idea for Nintendo Life to include the video in this article or something, since it shows off Lakitu and gives a slightly more in-depth look at the game. Or at least do a screen grab of Lakitu and add it to the Screen Shot gallery if you could?
EDIT: Picture of Lakitu in his cute little cloud kart. :3
@irken004 From the video shown at the conference, it looks like Monster Hunter 4 will be very different from 3G. Plus, each gen has its own unique exclusive monsters too. Seriously, in the MH4 video the guy fled across a huge area (much larger than previous MHs' 'areas') from a tigrex, then fled a rathalos, and then jumped on top of the rathalos and started stabbing it. It seemed nothing like MH's current battle system, although I am sure that the video shown will only be a portion of the game along with the regular battle system.
@James I have played Freedom and Freedom Unite a lot, and it is only possible because the Analogue Nub and Plus-Pad are swapped in comparison with the 3DS, which allows you to claw your hand and reach both. Some people just mashed the L button to center the camera, but most hate that. It really needs a second stick on the 3DS.
EDIT: Dang it, ninja'd by Pix.
@pixelman Personally, once I got used to the claw, it was very comfortable.

Something about Layton and Phoenix being in the same game feels... wrong. Just doesn't seem to click for me. Besides that, though, the game is looking good.
Re: Zelda: Skyward Sword Video is a Real Treasure
Haha. Tempting us. I WANNA KNOW WHATZ IN TEH CHEST. Sadness. The cruelty. The brutality... the inhumanity.
Re: Site News: Nintendo Life's eShop Appearance
NL is def my favourite gaming site. I've lurked here for as long as I can remember. This is pretty amazing. Nintendo Life FTW!
Re: Talking Point: The Most Memorable Third Party Game Boy Advance Games
Astro Boy was a hidden gem. I spent forever playing ChuChu Rocket... I played most of the Megaman Battle Network games a few years back, and Advance Wars was always fun to play. Too many good GBA titles.
Re: Review: Kirby Mass Attack (DS)
Well written review, Corbs. Might check mass Attack out later down the road.
Did anyone else think Mass Attack would've been the perfect fit for the iPhone? I guess your finger might obscure the playing field though.
Re: Go First-Person in New Mario Kart 7 Trailer
@WumboXpert
I'd think if I got hit by a blue shell whilst in first-person, I'd get dizzy. Or upchuck my lunch. Or scream like a little girl in amazement.
Re: Would You Trust a Goomba to Clean Your House?
The Octorok one has captured my heart. I need one, stat. If someone doesn't plop one of these adorable little things in my lap within ten seconds...
Re: Go First-Person in New Mario Kart 7 Trailer
@SuperMario4Ever
Nice catch on the red 7 and Super Leaf!
Article about it can be found here.

EDIT2: Fixed broken link. Sorry.
Re: Monster Hunter 4 to Burn Up Your 3DS
@irken004
From the video shown at the conference, it looks like Monster Hunter 4 will be very different from 3G.
Re: Analogue Stick Add-On for 3DS Revealed
@James I have played Freedom and Freedom Unite a lot, and it is only possible because the Analogue Nub and Plus-Pad are swapped in comparison with the 3DS, which allows you to claw your hand and reach both. Some people just mashed the L button to center the camera, but most hate that. It really needs a second stick on the 3DS.
EDIT: Dang it, ninja'd by Pix.
@pixelman Personally, once I got used to the claw, it was very comfortable.
Re: Dragon Quest X Goes Online for Wii and Wii U
I watched the conference today, and took many pictures of the game which I have uploaded to my blog: http://ihavefury.typepad.com
The specific blog post with pictures is:

just in case anyone is interested in seeing what the game looks like, and did not watch the conference.
