Re: Feature: Retrofitting Your Console for the HD Age

JakobG

@1: These methods don't make the image sharper, they just give you an option to connect old video sources with HD-TVs. No one said the graphics would improve, and upon thinking just a bit about it, one would know it is not possible.

Re: No, You Cannot Fight as Samus in Dead or Alive: Dimensions

JakobG

First of all, Team Ninja did not ruin Other M.
NL already had an article on how everyone is a premature on that games, so I don't want to get repeat what the sane amount of people on the internet said over and over again, just because most people refuse to see this game in an other way but superficial.
Also, does it really that matter if Samus is playable or not? Sure, it would have been nice to be able to fight as her, but you guys sound like a new Smash Bros has been announced, but without online. And honestly, if she would have been added, you would have complained anyway. If it wasn't for the "A female character is in a game with jiggle physics!", it would have been because her attacks would have been mostly improvised, since there's no way you'll see a range-fighter in a technical fighter like DOA.

Re: Features: Don't Touch my Samus: Metroid's Controversial Turn

JakobG

Oh boy, Other M. So much to complain about the haters.
Let's start off with the whole taking orders thing.
SAMUS WORKS FOR THE GALACTIC FEDERATION.
Which means that, as an employee, she is supposed to follow orders of authority persons, such as Adam. I mean, he's got a whole bunch of GF-soliders doing whatever he tells them to do and you don't see people complaining about them being submissive. Just because Samus is bad, it doesn't mean she has to act like a reckless vigilante.
Next, Samus' fear of Ridley. For christ's sake, think, people. Ridley killed her parents and almost her as well when she was a little girl. I'd be scared of whoever did that to me as well. You could easily take any cutscene with Ridley in it and Samus' body language and eyes could say fear, ergo it's not non-canon.
People hate the Samus of this game not because she was stereotypical and sexist, but because she was not stereotypical and sexist. For gamers, female characters always have to be either cute or tough. Since Samus was not cute, people assumed she was tough. Matching properties to this character are emotional distance, ignorance and self-awareness. Samus wasn't like that, and since gamers are ignorant about female characters, well, you get the idea.

Re: There May Never Be Another Smash Bros. as Hardcore as Melee

JakobG

I see where he's going at.
Melee was way too in-depth for a casual fighter.
But I don't see that really as a problem.
Look at games like Super Mario Galaxy 2 or Donkey Kong Country Returns.
They're both Nintendo-hard titles, but with the superguide and the supportive coop in DKCR, they're accessible to the casuals.
There are other ways to make a fighter family-friendly than to dumb it down, Sakurai. It's just your job to find them. How about control difficulty settings? Mario Kart has that feature with drifting. I despise the automatic, while my more inexperienced brother always chooses to use it.

Re: There May Never Be Another Smash Bros. as Hardcore as Melee

JakobG

I stared playing Diddy Kong a few weeks ago, and it's a blast.
After a few days, I was able to beat level 9-coms and come up with awesome combos. It didn't matter if I win or loose, in every match with Diddy there's something awesome happening.
Want to make it accessible and appealing to everyone, Sakurai?
Make every character as fun and different as Diddy.

Re: If Donkey Kong Country Returns is Too Hard, Use Super Guide

JakobG

I like the Super Guide.
It allows games to be hard while remaining accessible to less experienced gamers.

@LightSamus: Sorry to disappoint you, but you are wrong. Nintendo is a BUSINESS. Meaning they try to make as much MONEY as possible. And they primarily make games to earn said MONEY, so they have to make sure enough people BUY it. And most Wii owners are CASUAL GAMERS. Ergo, if you want to sell many copies, you have to make the game attractive to the big crowd. So why should you not include a feature that allows the main audience of the Wii play a hard game and experienced gamers will never face? Why are you aggravated by the fact inexperienced gamers are capable of playing through a game, even if they get help? Are you that sadistic that you merely find enjoyment in games by knowing you are better than other? Besides, many games have inbuilt guides, like Machinarium, which has a link to it's walkthrough that's as accessible as the Inventory-button. Leaving out the Super Guide for "hardcore" gamers like you would alienate all the casual gamers.

Re: Rumour: Cell Chip Could Power Wii Successor

JakobG

Seeing what major graphical improvements the 3DS gets, it would be likely.
Nintendo always sets gameplay over graphics, and it wouldn't be different here.
The Wii revolutionized the control over a game, and it's successor will stick closely to the original control scheme, with a few tweaks. After they've established satisfying gameplay to the control and found out how much and how little motion controls should be involved, they can focus on the visual experience of a game.
It's like in Zelda: Whereas Wind Waker was graphically not very challenging for the GC, but Twilight Princess picked up Wind Waker's engine and made it look amazing and complex.
I think you can even see a similar pattern in Nintendo's console.
