Not sure where you have heard about RDR1 being better, but I personally don't remember seeing a single best games list where RDR would be ahead of the sequel. I loved the first as well but I think RDR2 is better in almost every imaginable way. Of course it's been years since I played them especially the first so they aren't that fresh in my mind.
The only reason I can think is some might think first has a tighter pace since it's a lot shorter and maybe a less padding and faster gameplay since second has tons of more extra content and side missions as well. Both are great in my opinion but second is better.
Started RDR on Switch back in the day but other games came along and got distracted. Might actually now finish it with the new update.
Excellent list overall and I agree with almost everything in the top 10, especially agree with TotK/BotW as top 2 and surprisingly Odyssey might actually be my favorite Mario after my third play through on Switch 2.
A bit surprised to see Donkey Kong Bananza this high but it really is that good and I agree with the write up entirely. Would personally rank Galaxy before the sequel but both are of course among the best.
Well we do have Return, but I would love to see the first three on Switch since they're all among my all time favorite games. Especially LeChuck's Revenge, which makes my top 3.
I already played this last year on PC and a couple of months ago on Switch and of course the original version several times since the release, so I probably skip this for now. Still always nice to see more games getting Switch 2 updates.
Really looking forward to the sequel released next year also.
My favorite game of all time so he clearly has a great taste in gaming. Personally I'm only on my second play through but still have played close to 300h combined with Switch and Switch 2.
Actually just played A Link to the Past this year after a long time and it holds up incredibly well. Still one of the best games ever made and the gameplay and design should not be changed. Still I would happily play true to the original remake with just upgraded visuals and audio. I would love to see Ocarina of time remake as well.
Bloodborne in 60fps has been the dream for a long time.
I usually welcome remakes and remaster of my favorites and I think they are a bit like watching old classic movies on 4k uhd.
Very fitting comparison since both are the peak of their mediums and Nintendo and Hitchcock both understand/stood the basics of creating effortlessly enjoyable works. Best Nintendo games always feel great to play and control and even the lesser Hitchcock films nail the basics of compelling characters and plots.
I personally appreciate the sentiment a lot since TotK and BotW are my favorite game of all time and Hitchcock is close second favorite director of all time. I have spend more than 200 hours of playing those two and I have seen almost every Hitchcock movie and the favorites several times.
Was always interested in this and now would be the perfect time to finally get around playing it. Seems exactly like my cup of tea from the genre to the atmospheric time period and the PC version got pretty good reviews as well. Very reasonable price in the eShop also.
I've also watched tons of westerns this year, mainly bc some of the old lesser known are movies I've never seen before.
Winchester '73 , The Naked Spur, Comanche Station, Broken Arrow and El Dorado were all pretty good. Saw this weekend the new 4k UHD release of Rio Bravo, first viewing in years and it's prob my favorite of the "lighter westerns", plays out often more like a buddy movie. Excellent transfer as well.
My top 3 westerns of all time are: 1. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) 2. Unforgiven (1992) 3. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
Also feel like playing Red Dead again, haven't played it since it came out. Tempted to pick up the Switch version.
Played around 230 hours so far and still haven't beaten the final boss. I've found around 130 shrines and 500 Korok seeds. I never get tired of the exploring the world and this is now my new favorite game of all time.
I played personally and with the wife around 400- 500 hours of BotW but Tears of the Kingdom is my new favorite game of all time. Played it so far more than 200 hours and it surprisingly improves BotW in almost every way. A true game for the ages.
I don't see whats the point to release such articles when a game has less than 20 reviews. At this point both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom had a score of 98. The more the reviews the lower the score almost always gets. This said I'm sure BG3 is also one of the best games of the year.
That's true of course but in that case you should expect some grinding. I don't think you can 100% any bigger game without some grinding or busywork but I personally enjoy grinding in TotK and would like to have more of it actually.
I personally didn't feel the open world in Elden Ring brought anything revolutionary to the Souls series. It's one of the best games of recent years but I still enjoyed most all the self-contained areas like Leyndell, Volcano Manor etc. We're splitting hairs here because all Bloodborne, Elden Ring and Dark Souls are in my top 20 of all time, but comparing Elden Ring and Bloodborne more is not necessarily always better. In addition to reasons I mentioned about Bloodborne I think it's just the right length and has a perfect pacing. Elden Ring being a massive game has some of the lesser moments by default.
I don't really care which is ranked higher since both Bloodborne and Elden Ring are my favorite games of the century along with Breath of the Wild and The Last of Us.
I seriously still think Bloodborne is the best of the series and I know many people agree. Even though Elden Ring got close. I still think Bloodborne has the best combat and the world in the series. There's just something about that dark and disturbing world and haunting atmosphere. I personally would rank Bloodborne in my top 5 of all time as well and if it makes any difference I've been gaming since the late 80's.
It has been written several times that this is not the opinion of gq-magazine but list voted by more than 200 people working as a professional games reviewer, developer or a journalist. In my opinion this list has more merit than most lists out there.
Some people also don't seem to understand this is not just some random list, but a list voted by more than 200 people working as a professional games reviewer, developer or a journalist. It doesn't get much more credible when it comes to ranking games.
Wish they would have similar site to games as theyshootpictures is for movies where all the professional lists are gathered and compiled as a one massive list, which is updated yearly.
Funny part is that many people complain about the lists but I've taken part to several voting and compilation of top100 lists whether it's games or movies and most of the time the lists end up looking quite similar. It's almost always the same games and movies that make the cut but in just a bit different order. If we would compile a top100 list here at Nintendolife BotW would most likely be #1 as well.
Very well deserved and quite expected #1 spot. I don't remember seeing a single top100 list since BotW release where it wasn't #1. Here's a couple of recent ones.
I've been gaming since the late 80's and Breath of the Wild is also my number #1 game of all time. I'm actually still playing it quite often with the wife even after 300-400hours. It's simply just so well designed game that it's always fun just to explore and have an adventure. The Last of Us and Bloodborne make my top10 of all time as well, but I'd have liked to see a bit more old point and click adventures on the list and The Wind Waker is my second favorite Zelda so I'd rank it way higher. Nice to see Ocarina and Link to the Past get respectable placing. I also think all three Bloodborne, Dark Souls and Elden Ring do belong in the top 20.
Overall I think it's a pretty good list with a good mix of old classics, nostalgia and some really good recent games.
I played the first episode of LiS last night on Switch OLED handheld and wasn't bothered by any other issues besides the load times. I played through the whole game twice on PS4 but that was several years ago so really wanted to revisit the games on Switch and especially on handheld that they fit perfectly. I played True Colors on PS5 so can't compare performance on Switch.
I have a great memories of playing these back in the day and also watching my wife play through the whole Life is Strange. Still one of the most memorable and emotional games I've played and Max ranks high among my favorite game characters.
My first thought was Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers as well. I still play it through every 2-3 years and It's my favorite adventure game of all time along with Monkey Island 2. It really is memorable and the world and characters feel real and the mystery really pulls you in.
Of course if this has more humorous tone there might be plenty of Monkey Island and maybe Grim Fandango in Voodoo Detective as well. Kathy Rain was also one recent game heavily inspired by Gabriel Knight.
But might have to check out Voodoo Detective since it's not overly expensive and seems interesting enough.
I agree with you. Possibly my favorite game of all time as well and been planning to replay it again and for the first time with Switch OLED. Breath of the Wild is one of those special games that you wish could experience for the first time again.
Haven't been following her recent work (And it seems I won't be anytime soon) but Gabriel Knight series is among my absolute favorites and I've lost count how many times Ive played Sins of the Fathers. I think the series still has some of the best writing in games.
Actually its rare to find a ranking where the second is not considered the best. I dont think I ever remember seeing one. I guess might be some where the first is the best but I'd surprised if in some ranking third would be as #1.
Finally some good (and very unexpected) news for a change! Monkey Island 2 is still among my favorite games of all time and the first one is quite high as well. Also really enjoyed Thimbleweed Park so naturally really looking forward to this.
Such a heartwarming story and makes me really happy for him. He couldn't have chosen a better game and I hope it brings him hundreds of hours of joy. Also agree that I hope Nintendo notices this and sends him some reward.
Breath of the Wild should be higher and it is higher than Odyssey in pretty much every ranking I've ever seen. For example both of these Metacritic rankings of the best games of the decade.
Only reason BotW is lower on Opencritic is the inferior WII U release that brings the score down which I think it's stupid to opencritic to include both version in the same score. Why should the WII U framerate issues bring the Switch score down? I prefer the Metacritic way that different scores for both versions, 97 on Switch and 96 on WII U.
Sites are always way too hasty to post articles like this. Should always give at least a few days to wait that more reviews come in. Breath of the Wild actually had a score of 98 for quite a while only to eventually drop to 97 a score that is still standing five years later.
Opencritic doesn't work like that though, it's been only around a few years so clearly the highest rated games are compiled from that time. It's not supposed to be any kinds of best list, just which games on their site from the past few years had best ratings.
I still recommend rather checking the scores from Metacritic since it's been around a lot longer and has more variety on the games reviewed there.
Also keep in mind that several games close to top have like 10 reviews, whereas for example Breath of the Wild has more than 100 and there also might be same game several times reviewed on a different platform.
Very excited for Elden Ring as Souls is my second favorite game series after Zelda and both Bloodborne and Dark Souls are in my top 10 of all time.
I find Opencritic ratings a tad problematic in some cases if same game has an inferior release, like in case of Breath of the Wild the WII U ratings lower the overall a bit. On Metacritic Breath of the Wild with a rating 97 is still ahead of both Elden Ring and Super Mario Odyssey.
