Actually Carlos, tootie_kicks wrote that as a response to what Virus wrote.
In any case, I don't think this game is really aimed at us. More like the little kids who are in kindergarten. And it being rated in Australia first, I can imagine it being released during Australian winter, when it's too cold outside to play catch. As a summer release, it'd be not a good thing to release, as it'd give kids just one more reason not to go outside and enjoy the warm weather.
Zomg, this was quite unexpected. WiiWare FPS, getting a whopper of a score like 9/10? Heck, the moment I read that you had AI partners, I was expecting it to be followed up at some point with "but they are really no help" or "they tend to get stuck in places" or "they have a tendancy of destroying things you don't want them to". Surprised that wasn't the case. And wow, online mode. Strange that multiplayer isn't available offline but it is online, but I benefit more from online multiplayer, anyway, so I'm not complaining. Especially nice that one doesn't have to dedicate themselves to another team for co-op mode. Oh, yes. And the fact that it's score-based is a nice draw. Means I'm not going to go into this expecting a serious FPS and get disappointed when I find that it isn't.
Hmm, yes, that would be when I nodded off at the wheel of my car.
I know, I know, it's dumb of myself if I let myself fall asleep while driving, but here's the real kicker: this had been going on for a month or so. Yeah, real tired after work, I was getting. It was hard staying awake, once I started going off the road, but the sound of the loud gravel woke me up. Eventually, though, my luck would run out. I was nodding off at the wheel, coming on to a construction zone. Traffic was stopped. I woke up in time to see that I was going to hit a pickup truck with its gate down. I managed to swerve around it in time.
...Only to hit an oncoming car.
I eventually did a way to keep myself awake on the way home from work: chewing gum.
Actually, you could revive the other player by sacrificing one of your own extra lives. I believe this was done by pausing the game and pressing Select. So as long as you had one extra life when you're about to deal the last boss a final blow, you're good.
Hey, do you still have to "kiss" enemies to stand a chance of killing them in later levels? (Kiss being, blowing a bubble at them right when you're touching them.)
Actually, if the original Bubble Bobble ending works the same in this, I'm glad that you can bring in a second player without a second controller. (In the NES version at least, you got a bad ending if you didn't have player 2 onscreen when you beat the game.)
As far as "Super Bubble Bobble" goes, wasn't there a secret mode in the NES game callled that? Pretty sure it was basically the same levels but with all the game's enemies swapped around (the whales and starfish switching out for each other, for example).
And I just watched the video. Wow, the bubbles do burst sooner. Can't set up combos as easily. Unless the video is showing a harder difficulty.
Well, that's okay. 200 new levels in addition to the original 100 is going to keep me busy for a while. No, wait, the NES vesion had something like 110. Is the secret exit of the level 99 still there?
"the jumping being slightly slower than in the arcade, which doesn't speed up even when you get the shoe"
That's a bit of a bummer, because even the NES version the shoe sped up jumps. But at the same time, I never liked the shoe anyway.
But it's a real shame to hear nothing about a level editor. Does the DLC menu lend to the possibility that another feature might be added to the list of downloads?
@ 28. Chicken Brutus You could fall into a wall from the top of the screen if the wall reached all the way to the top. Really, the only wall you could never go through were the two-block walls on either side of the screen.
Ugh, you mean the sprites look like crap because they're not sprites at all, they're 3D models? Here I thought it was just a result of image compression or something like that.
Anyway, not entirely sure what the discussion about wall movement is, but I'll take a guess. I have the NES version. If you fall inside a wall from the top of the screen, you can't move while you're in it until you exit the wall through its ceiling. Definately made things difficult, especially with trying to get the secret exit in Level 99.
Speaking of, I wonder if this game will have its own secret stages.
Ah, Bubble Bobble. One of my favorite games. You know, this would be awesome if it had a level editor. I mean think about it, it'd be really easy to pull off. Maybe they could have one as a DLC feature.
Yes, it was. But a lot of people seem to fault it.
And in Kirby's Adventure and Kirby's Dream Land 2, one hit always knocked away your power. Although, now that I think about it, those were the only two Kirby games where one hit killed your power. In fact, I've played Kirby Super Star and I've managed to lose a full health bar without losing my power, yet I never faulted the game for it. So I guess it's not really as much a fault as I had thought.
Okay, I downloaded it, played it, and I gotta admit, it really is the weakest Kirby game I've played. Which is surprising, because every other Kirby game I've played, I enjoyed (yes, even Kirby 64). But this, while it's not really bad, it sort of fell short of being good.
Okay, so what I liked about it. The level challenges. Fun stuff, especially the mini-games, and I kinda liked the levels that challanged you to reach the end of a stage with a specific animal friend. And speaking of animal friends, I've always liked their appearance in Dream Land 2, loved their cameos in Kirby 64, kinda miss them when they're not around. Same here, they're fun to play with, especially now that they each have a more varied set of movements (like Rick can leap off walls and the cat can double-jump, and the jelly girl grabs enemies and places them in your mouth instead of sucking), although it really baffles me how Kine the fish is one of the fastest friends on land. I'm glad they no longer have their own themes, as the theme inclusion in Dream Land 2 seemed like a poor attempt to make up for only one level song per world, and I'd rather hear the music of each level rather than be forced to hear a specific animal tune. And their animations are really cute, especially when they react to you choosing one friend over another. Level design definately felt straight from Dream Land 2, in fact at times it felt like I was playing a 16-bit Dream Land 2. And the bosses were fun, and this game's rendition of Whispy Woods is probably my favorite. Also, I was pleased to find that secret doors were still showing up in this game. You know, those doors that are either invisible or don't stand out as much as regular doors. Kirby's Adventure had a ton of them.
Now for my dislikes. Starting off, the power-ups suck. A bunch of them feel restrictive (the fireball attack) or were scaled down from Dream Land 2's (the lightbulb attack). Some of them were good, yes. Cutter, Kine's fire-spitting attack, Stone, Rick's fire-breathing, and Needle were my favorites. But most others, I wanted to avoid at all costs. This is the only Kirby game where I wanted to outright avoid powers (yes, including Adventure's suicidal Sleep). The controls also took a lot of getting used to. It's not that Kirby's slow (though his walking speed could've been a bit better, and his swimming speed is just terrible), it's that he tends to stall after various actions, like spitting out air pufts. I'm used to being in a constant state of motion in Kirby games, doing stuff and spitting air without slowing down, so this was really frustrating for me at first. And lastly, as I noted in a previous post, getting hit does not always knock out your power. Which I guess is kinda good, 'cause I got hit a lot. (The game may be easy with its many extra lives, but it still felt challenging to me. Mostly due to the broken powers. Stupid broom attack.) But I still liked it better when one hit from an enemy in older Kirby games meant having to rush after your power before it disappeared.
Oh, speaking of "easy", apparently you can get by without losing all your health at any point. When you're low on health, just bring out your gooey partner, then swallow him back up for extra health. As much as I got hit, it's an exploit I found myself using often. (Come to think of it, Kirby Super Star had a similar exploit.)
So there you have it. Good level design, broken gameplay. I give this game a 3/5.
Even though this list isn't in any specific order, I can't help but find it amusing that the first game in the list, Yoshi's Island, has a screenshot with a number 10 on it.
Also, this is really trivial, but I heard that the "Super Mario World 2" title was added for the US version, meaning it was just a standalone game in Japan rather than a sequel.
What needs to happen is Nintendo needs to announce their own first-party title.
And @24. Twilight Crow Wow, I had forgotten sequels even existed for a while there. I wonder what the first WiiWare game to recieve a sequel will be. Eh, probably will be Lost Winds 2.
I watched the video. Yeah, walking is slow, but running looks speedy enough. One problem I see, though, is getting hit does not always result in losing your power. I know that was also a problem in Kirby 64. Makes things somewhat easier if you're not worrying as much about getting hit. The gooey character also looks like an annoying partner to have.
It's about time. I've been wanting this game ever since it originally came out, but I had never gotten around to it, and it's been strangely difficult to find in stores that sell older games.
But I feel sorry for those who aren't interested in the game.
I'd find it pretty dumb on Hudson's part if they really gave up on the VC entirely. I mean, didn't Alien Crush on the VC sell so well that they felt it worth making a good sequel on WiiWare? The guys might find they have another gold title waiting to be released. How could they give up on that potential?
Oh, to add to the "family-friendly" complaints, what about the parental controls, Nintendo? Have you really forgotten it existed? Surely you could put ratings into the downloads that can be prevented by parental controls restricting anything that isn't family-friendly enough for the user. And shouldn't that be what matters, what the user wants?
Well, that figures. The giveaway must've been in some topic I wasn't looking.
Ah, there it is. In the interview article. Yeah, I read that to see how the guys compared it (or un-compared it) to World of Goo. But I don't tend to read comments in articles not related to what games come out or what's reviewed. What would people say about the game that's not already being said elsewhere. Well, apparently people saying that they're giving away free copies.
"The graphics truly are among the best we’ve seen on Wiiware, with bold colours and bags of character. Even so, they are what could be described as Gamecube quality, so it’s not exactly a technological marvel."
And this is a problem? Last I checked, Gamecube games still looked awesome. Besides, this is WiiWare we're talking about. Even if it's a part of Wii, the memory constraints tend to mean we're usually dealing with N64 graphics.
The "out of bounds" thing sounds very off-putting to me. And yet, I vaguely recall playing a real-life minigolf game that had those white boundaries, including some that put those boundaries close to the hole despite there being a ton of empty space around it. I dunno, it's been years since I've played minigolf. And I also remember playing minigolf without the boundaries, and it was simply a matter of keeping your ball within the barrier. Dunno, can we see some screenshots of the more boundary-crazy holes?
Also, does the game have a freeplay option? I wanna be able to try out individual holes without having to play the whole nine courses.
@16. AlexSays Wait, there's no left-handed option? Two people in my family are left-handed. I really hope that isn't the case.
@The silly Gamecube graphics vs Wii graphics debate You people pointing out awesome-looking games like Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros Brawl, well of COURSE those games are gonna look awesome! They're big-name titles! I think the general comment aboug some Gamecube games looking better than some Wii games, some Wii games (key word: some) did not, in fact, get much of a budget in the graphics department.
@31. shadow262 What are you bringing up functionality for? We were talking about graphics.
@27. shadow262 Debatable. I kinda like Thousand-Year Door's graphics better. Granted, Super PM does have widescreen capabilities.
I wouldn't want Nintendo to not release this just because it's on outside collections. But yes, the Genesis Collection is on several systems now, including the relatively cheap and having plenty of great games PS2. Odds are, most people will have a system that has the Genesis Collection. (Although, 66. Mr. Cheez does make a good point about how many people will only really want a few games from such a compilation, which would potentially make the VC release a more worthwhile purchase.)
Still, you cannot deny that it's one of the greats. It just would've been nice if another VC game released with it. Especially with it being Christmas Week. Really, Nintendo, every other developer makes a big deal about Christmas. I'm sure you do, too. But you're sorta leaving the Virtual Console out of the rush.
Come to think of it, I just realized, nobody's releasing collection packs on Nintendo systems, anymore. Guess they see no reason to what with the VC existing. Either that or Nintendo won't allow it.
@50. yoda87960
Not to my understanding. Everything I hear about Nuts & Bolts says to me "not really a B-K game".
@69. Manicfatty "The Gamecube was last, in part, because Nintendo was arrogant and alienated many 3rd party developers with their policy towards newer tech and internet gaming. It was also due to Nintendo not understanding their audience, and positioning the system as a toy."
You need to see this (warning: language): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9joAb4XMaUs Make note of what he says starting at 5:42. A more accurate statement is that Nintendo's Gamecube seemed like a kid's toy. (Seriously. Purple? WTF, mates?)
@107. Mipsymoodle "All Wiiware games are flash games that can be easily found somewhere on the internet or at least something like it."
Wow. That's gotta be one of the biggest exaggerations I've ever heard.
Finally, I think people complaining about people complaining about this being a 1 VC game week are forgetting one thing: IT'S FREAKIN' CHRISTMASS WEEK! Okay, yeah, PS4 is a pretty great Christmas gift. But it's still only one gift.
I'd like to remind you all of the current track record of announced VC games before their actual release. I myself will not believe it until it actually happens.
Oh great, now other developers will see it fit to pull the same stunt that Space Invaders Get Even did.
As for SB Ep.5, I think that'll do well. It has Trogdor, who ultimately is more famous than Strong Bad. I mean, Trogdor's rock theme was in a Guitar Hero game.
I always love it when a developer comes and comments on their own game's review and what people are saying about it. It's like, "wow, we're actually speaking with a person who made a professional video game!" Especially nice when they give developer insight like this.
Wow, only a 4? That's disappointing. I was considering giving it a download. And yet, I wonder. For a person who doesn't really give a crap about the graphics (and actually, I didn't think they looked bad from the screenshots) or the lack of online (does it really need it?) or the lack of Wiimote sensitivity (SSBBrawl didn't have it either, and people still found it awesome), how would it rate?
Apparently people don't care that you're paying for a retail release in multiple installments with Space Invaders Get Even.
And I expected Dangeresque 3 to do better than this. The fans have been waiting for it to happen since Strong Bad mentioned it years ago. But I guess that's what the problem is. Fan service doesn't work too well when most of the userbase isn't comprised of fans.
Woo, glad to hear BPlus hasn't given up. And hey, this looks interesting. Looking at the video, it reminds me of Super Buster Bros.. (Reread: I didn't say Mario)
And not to worry about the controls, as the article does mention that regular (non-Wiimote swinging) controls are possible.
#16 "I think this site tends to overrate games, I trust IGN more"
points to the Boingz review expects a response along the lines of either "exception to the rule" or "IGN was still right"
Anyway, nice to hear these guys are taking what the learned from the PC release and improving on it for the WiiWare release. And especially glad they haven't given up on it, 'cause right now this has the makings of a cancelled game.
"I'd be curious if the reviewer even played the game."
Why is it that when there's a disagreeable review, there is always, ALWAYS somebody who comes along and questions whether the reviewer played the game. Can't you accept the fact that it's possible for somebody to not like the game? Reviewers are just as prone to personal opinions as regular gamers.
Unrelated note. Seems that there isn't a single bad-looking WiiWare game that's rated good. I'd like to see a poor-looking game that's absolutely awesome to play. It's kinda hard to prove that "graphics don't matter" when the rest of the game seems to be at the same level of quality. (Although, on this matter, nice to hear that Boingz was better-liked than other graphics-poor, low-rated games.)
"We're experimenting a little. Party games do really well. Simple mono-player titles like bowling or pool aren't doing as well. The target is family or Nintendo fans only looking for Nintendo games."
This is very worrying. I like one-player affairs. Don't leave me out of the equation just because you think you can make more money just doing party games.
Yes, I'm still waiting to be able to choose from a full channel listing's of games. I've owned my Wii since almost near launch, and the memory has prevented me from getting much into the third of the four pages (by two or three channels). Granted, I'm sure I could do better if I had exclusively VC games instead of some of the WiiWare games I have.
Laughs at the conversation going on Has this Nintendo kiddie image really gotten so out of hand that we're debating whether a Mario game is hardcore or not?
And to previous comment: spending all that time across empty ocean in Wind Waker did not make the game more enjoyable.
Nah, those aren't PS1 graphics. PS1 textures aren't smoothed out like that. You can see the individual pixels of PS1 textures. No, those blurred textures are more reminiscent of N64 graphics. But that doesn't matter to me, 'cause I still love my N64 and if this means the game isn't a memory hog, I'm fine with it.
However, the game does scream "World of Goo" ripoff.
Whoa, the RPG giant is publishing their title? That must be quite an ego boost. But don't get overconfident, guys. You still need to put effort into your games.
This game is great. Granted, I've never finished the game. I've got a terrible attention span. Only made it up to the first vehicle you drive. But I did get to the first battle with the main villain, and the events surrounding him were just what you'd expect from an encounter with a main villain (this guy is big trouble). And from what I've seen from the game so far, this game definately is up there with the great RPGs of the 16-bit era.
My only complaint is the spell names. You can't play this game without an instruction book by your side. I appreciate the attempt at original spell names, but I'd rather have my FIREs and CUREs instead of FOIs and RESes. Heck, a few spells and abilities weren't mentioned in the original instruction booklet. (Yeah, I own the original.)
Definately should've been a retail game. Sure, Nintendo is bringing out that solution to storage problem, but that sounds like to me it's just more "store on your SD card and move it to your Wii drive when you need it". I wanna be able to have a full channel listing on my Wii, darnit. But I digress. I dunno why this was broken up into a WiiWare game? Cheaper costs, maybe? Or perhaps they expect to get more money with people trying out the 500-point "trial version" (as some people like to put it) than people jumping into a full-priced full game. I personally think the idea will alienate more people, but we'll see. If there's a listing that'll show how much the DLC has sold, I'll want to see it.

Re: USA WiiWare Update: Maboshi's Arcade and Pool Revolution: Cue Sports
@18. wiiwii
Isn't that how all puzzle games work, though? There's no "continues" in Tetris.
So, why the name change for these games?
(Funny thing, WiiWorld. your spell-checker didn't like "isn" in isn't and it didn't like Tetris. )
Re: Nintendo To Launch Wii Video Service Next Year
Oh, to add to the "family-friendly" complaints, what about the parental controls, Nintendo? Have you really forgotten it existed? Surely you could put ratings into the downloads that can be prevented by parental controls restricting anything that isn't family-friendly enough for the user. And shouldn't that be what matters, what the user wants?
Re: Nintendo To Launch Wii Video Service Next Year
"so it seems only natural to see Nintendo following suit."
Since when?
"But instead of..."
I rest my case.
Re: Review: Tiki Towers (WiiWare)
Well, that figures. The giveaway must've been in some topic I wasn't looking.
Ah, there it is. In the interview article. Yeah, I read that to see how the guys compared it (or un-compared it) to World of Goo. But I don't tend to read comments in articles not related to what games come out or what's reviewed. What would people say about the game that's not already being said elsewhere. Well, apparently people saying that they're giving away free copies.
Re: Review: Tiki Towers (WiiWare)
Wait, wait... Free copy? Did I miss something?
And why does this game not have a quick-save feature for the long levels? I ask you, oh developers of this game.
Re: Review: Fun! Fun! Minigolf (WiiWare)
@16. AlexSays
Wait, there's no left-handed option? Two people in my family are left-handed. I really hope that isn't the case.
@The silly Gamecube graphics vs Wii graphics debate
You people pointing out awesome-looking games like Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros Brawl, well of COURSE those games are gonna look awesome! They're big-name titles! I think the general comment aboug some Gamecube games looking better than some Wii games, some Wii games (key word: some) did not, in fact, get much of a budget in the graphics department.
@31. shadow262
What are you bringing up functionality for? We were talking about graphics.
@27. shadow262
Debatable. I kinda like Thousand-Year Door's graphics better. Granted, Super PM does have widescreen capabilities.
Edit. This took too long to type.
Re: USA VC Update: Phantasy Star IV
@34. Stuffgamer1
@50. yoda87960
Not to my understanding. Everything I hear about Nuts & Bolts says to me "not really a B-K game".
@69. Manicfatty
"The Gamecube was last, in part, because Nintendo was arrogant and alienated many 3rd party developers with their policy towards newer tech and internet gaming. It was also due to Nintendo not understanding their audience, and positioning the system as a toy."
You need to see this (warning: language): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9joAb4XMaUs
Make note of what he says starting at 5:42.
A more accurate statement is that Nintendo's Gamecube seemed like a kid's toy. (Seriously. Purple? WTF, mates?)
@107. Mipsymoodle
"All Wiiware games are flash games that can be easily found somewhere on the internet or at least something like it."
Re: Mana From Heaven For RPG Fans On Boxing Day In Europe
I'd like to remind you all of the current track record of announced VC games before their actual release. I myself will not believe it until it actually happens.

Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (17th Dec)
Oh great, now other developers will see it fit to pull the same stunt that Space Invaders Get Even did.
As for SB Ep.5, I think that'll do well. It has Trogdor, who ultimately is more famous than Strong Bad. I mean, Trogdor's rock theme was in a Guitar Hero game.
Re: Review: Bruiser & Scratch (WiiWare)
I always love it when a developer comes and comments on their own game's review and what people are saying about it. It's like, "wow, we're actually speaking with a person who made a professional video game!" Especially nice when they give developer insight like this.
Re: Review: Bruiser & Scratch (WiiWare)
Wow, only a 4? That's disappointing. I was considering giving it a download. And yet, I wonder. For a person who doesn't really give a crap about the graphics (and actually, I didn't think they looked bad from the screenshots) or the lack of online (does it really need it?) or the lack of Wiimote sensitivity (SSBBrawl didn't have it either, and people still found it awesome), how would it rate?
Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (10th Dec)
Apparently people don't care that you're paying for a retail release in multiple installments with Space Invaders Get Even.
And I expected Dangeresque 3 to do better than this. The fans have been waiting for it to happen since Strong Bad mentioned it years ago. But I guess that's what the problem is. Fan service doesn't work too well when most of the userbase isn't comprised of fans.
Re: Eternity’s Child – Still Alive, Coming in 2009
Me: "expects a response along the lines of [...] 'exception to the rule'"
GEncore: "Uh, that's just one review"
I win!
Re: Bplus Gets The Ball Rolling With Niki – Rock 'n' Ball
Woo, glad to hear BPlus hasn't given up. And hey, this looks interesting. Looking at the video, it reminds me of Super Buster Bros.. (Reread: I didn't say Mario)
And not to worry about the controls, as the article does mention that regular (non-Wiimote swinging) controls are possible.
Re: Eternity’s Child – Still Alive, Coming in 2009
#16 "I think this site tends to overrate games, I trust IGN more"
points to the Boingz review
expects a response along the lines of either "exception to the rule" or "IGN was still right"
Anyway, nice to hear these guys are taking what the learned from the PC release and improving on it for the WiiWare release. And especially glad they haven't given up on it, 'cause right now this has the makings of a cancelled game.
Re: Review: Boingz (WiiWare)
Re: Gameloft Interview Reveals New WiiWare and DSiWare Details
"We're experimenting a little. Party games do really well. Simple mono-player titles like bowling or pool aren't doing as well. The target is family or Nintendo fans only looking for Nintendo games."
This is very worrying. I like one-player affairs. Don't leave me out of the equation just because you think you can make more money just doing party games.
Re: Wii Firmware Update Makes Transferring to SD Faster
Yes, I'm still waiting to be able to choose from a full channel listing's of games. I've owned my Wii since almost near launch, and the memory has prevented me from getting much into the third of the four pages (by two or three channels). Granted, I'm sure I could do better if I had exclusively VC games instead of some of the WiiWare games I have.
Still, this be a nice update.
Re: Virtual Console Reviews is Two Today!
Happy birthday, VC-Reviews. If it weren't for you guys, I'd probably be using GameSpot for my VC reviews. And they were rather slow about it.
Hmm, seems I'm early to the party. Cool cake, by the way.
Re: Review: Target Toss Pro: Bags (WiiWare)
Okay, there's one thing I want to know about this game and its score: what makes it better than Pong Toss, which got a lower score than it?
Re: Tiki Towers Coming to WiiWare in December
If the hardcore can enjoy it.
Re: Tiki Towers Coming to WiiWare in December
Laughs at the conversation going on Has this Nintendo kiddie image really gotten so out of hand that we're debating whether a Mario game is hardcore or not?
And to previous comment: spending all that time across empty ocean in Wind Waker did not make the game more enjoyable.
Re: Tiki Towers Coming to WiiWare in December
Nah, those aren't PS1 graphics. PS1 textures aren't smoothed out like that. You can see the individual pixels of PS1 textures. No, those blurred textures are more reminiscent of N64 graphics. But that doesn't matter to me, 'cause I still love my N64 and if this means the game isn't a memory hog, I'm fine with it.
However, the game does scream "World of Goo" ripoff.
Re: LostWinds Coming To Japanese WiiWare In December
Whoa, the RPG giant is publishing their title? That must be quite an ego boost. But don't get overconfident, guys. You still need to put effort into your games.
Re: Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Re: Review: Space Invaders Get Even (WiiWare)
Re: USA VC Release - Earthworm Jim
To those hoping for the eventual release of the SNES version:
When has the other version of any multiplatform game on the VC been released?
(On that note, I'm still glad we got the NES version of Yoshi's Cookie instead of the SNES version. The SNES version doesn't seem as appealing to me.)
Re: Review: Tetris Party (WiiWare)
For lack of reader-submitted scores? I dunno. But really, nothing wrong with giving our own thoughts.
