I haven't commented here in YEARS, but I like this topic and Zelda and DQ are my absolute favorite series in video games.
If there's a series that is long running that I'm just getting into, I play whatever is the most current entry in the series. It's a good indicator to me if this is a series worth becoming invested in. If it's good today, it gives me confidence to play the old ones to see how it got to where it is today. The most recent series I've done this with was Yakuza. I started with Kiwami. It was a bit rough as a remake of a PS2 game but mostly enjoyable. That gave me the confidence to play 6, which was coming soon at the time. Since then, I've been playing them in chronological order.
Anyways. You can start Dragon Quest at any point. The series intentionally stopped evolving at the SNES games. Although I feel VIII (US) and XI is the best from a QOL perspective.
If you want to jump into Zelda, I recommend any game EXCEPT BotW. BotW is so good and different from the rest of the series that it will make the other games look basic.
@Berzerker The trailer claims to be based on the book series, so probably not. If it mentions nothing of the Wild Hunt then you should be in the clear.
@Yorumi In regards to your "sub-only anime" argument. I don't know if it was that cut and dry. I jumped ship as soon as I saw the reveal Jpop performance trailer, but for the couple years leading up to it was HYPED beyond belief and a game that combined the gritty calamity riddled world of SMT with the heroic and tragic themes of Fire Emblem that was teased at this games first mention. I would suspect that many others who were fans of both or either of those aforementioned series were at least curious as well.
@Lizuka After the explosion of success that was Fire Emblem Awakening, Fire Emblem's brand was heavily tarnished once Fates and this game released. Three Houses did a lot to salvage that but it took the near complete removal of sexual or suggestive content being removed from the series for it to be in a position where it is being talked about by more than just the niche insular crowds that flock to anime skin games.
It's not unrealistic to think that your game's focus on or away from "uncomfortable" content could be the difference between mainstream success and obscurity? I use quotes on uncomfortable because it could be anything, but Nintendo and Intelligent Systems have a brand that they are still growing and trying to find a new identity for. This game alienated the crap out of long time Fire Emblem fans and did nothing for newcomers.
@YessMasster Strong Fire Emblem and SMT fans are not happy with this game partly because it has nothing to do with either franchise thematically. As a JRPG it completely gets the job done competently enough. I cannot speak on anime fans as I am not one. I also didn't play the game because of the above reasons and that Jpop/idol culture is trash, but I watched my (at the time) 17 year old sister play it and she enjoyed it.
@Manah This is a Nintendo published game using a Nintendo IP. It's the same reason Link's shield had the cross taken off in the original Zelda. Nintendo can alter or not alter THEIR games in any way they see fit.
@Ralizah That does look really stupid, but why is a high school aged girl in a wedding dress to begin with? I don't know the story of this game besides J-Pop demons in Tokyo, but that reads as suspect right off the bat.
@AlternateButtons You have no idea of the artist's original intent. For all we know there was a producer at ATLUS who pushed for that content to be in it when an artist necessarily didn't want to. But you projecting your own bias onto the devs immediately turns it into censorship.
Don't be disingenuous about your arguments. If you personally wanted a game with the Japanese content, then just say that rather than put words in the developers (Nintendo/Intelligent Systems) mouths.
@Kalmaro I don't know who the actress is portraying Yen, but she just looks literally like a dirty white woman. Geralt is also a lot more pale than Henry Cavill.
@Belatarr I haven't begun to argue with you. The Witcher games promote choice. But unlike games where you play your own avatar, Geralt already has a pre-established personality. So between 2 options where one is to help and the other is to ignore, both are true and accurate to who he is as a person. Geralt might ignore someone being attacked because it's not his problem. Geralt will also help because he doesn't like seeing the weak preyed upon.
@Kalmaro I think they're doing it because medieval Europe had people in it besides the brightest whites. Your second sentence describes an incident of someone being racists toward you and your reaction was to agree with them? That's what I'm reading.
@Kalmaro Definitely an assumption on my part. Not gonna pretend. If I am mistaken, I'm sorry. But I have yet to run across someone complaining about diversity if they themselves were from a minority group. It's not cut and dry, but I'm speaking generally on purpose.
@Zuljaras More inclusion = more dollars. That's the most cynical look at it. Another could be that minorities are real people with jobs in media and don't consider white guys the default.
@Belatarr I don't know what's in the novels, but there are dozens of times in the games where Geralt stands up for marginalized people because he is also someone that society treats unfairly. All the elves and such that he sticks up for would paint Geralt a SJW in your eyes, no?
@Zuljaras You might not know the links between human behavior and what people observe in media, but they are quite thoroughly linked whether people like to admit it or not. Ever hear of propaganda films? Movies designed to specifically elicit specific feelings, thoughts, and responses from a target audience/population.
Diversity for the sake of diversity is mirroring the world we live in. More people engage more easily in media where they can insert themselves into.
@Zuljaras Wrong? Depends on who you are, but the entire second half of the comment is just him being annoyed at people who don't look like him being in Hollywood productions.
@Alztru I have been a Link main since melee and I can tell you all of his projectiles are incredibly easy to avoid. Move toward your opponent with jumping neutral attacks. It doesn't matter who you are. Any jumping neutral has priority over arrows, boomerangs, and will actually pick up his bombs on contact, disabling Link from producing more bombs until you let go of the one you picked up. Press jump and attack at the same time for an automatic short hop neutral while moving and you become a mobile hitbox.
I don't play Samus much but she is the same with greater vulnerability after she fires any projectiles. Homing missiles can be attacked or shielded or just jumped over. Just jump over the fast missiles. As far as her charge shot, Samus is going to shoot it only when you leave yourself in obvious vulnerable positions. It can be destroyed by attacking it often if not fully charged. If it is fully charged, intentionally bait it out. Do something that screams "shoot me", and then either jump over it or shield it. If you use a character with projectile attacks, you can cancel out your opponents by firing yours at theirs.
If all else fails learn characters with powerful reflects like Zelda or any Starfox character. Defeating projectile spam is incredibly easy and probably only used against you by players who are terrible. I have no tips for close up, because that's where Link makes his money. The projectiles are just to frustrate you into rushing into his real danger zone.
@justin233 Bill Trinen once said, while speaking on behalf of some of Nintendo's designers, that the reason Nintendo does not do achievements is that they don't want to tell players how they should play a game. Achievements can stifle an experience by limiting the player to what the developers thought was interesting and therefore de-emphasizing the player's own actions that don't yield achievements.
@Yasaal
*Super Edit: Wrestling games are not sports games. At least I never thought of them as such because of the cartoon levels of violence and how the systems are still very "gamey" compared to a Madden or NBA. Outside of being portrayed by real people, everything about it is as fictional as your favorite animated series. And just like Naruto or DragonBall get licensed games based on their respective fictions, so does wrestling.
@Equinox I never understood comments like this. Obviously, if you don't follow the series (sport?) you won't know the characters (athletes?). As a guy who vicariously follows wrestling through co-workers, I can tell you that this guy is Seth Rollins and he is a big deal in WWE. He's no John Cena or The Rock, but he's been in the spotlight for at least the last 3 or 4 years.
@Alshain01 Because every Korok seed is on top of a mountain, right? At this point, you're insulting me. The rain is an obstacle to overcome. Get good at climbing. Bye.
@Alshain01 I'm not going after all the koroks. If I find them, great. But I'm looking for shrines, bosses, and anything else that might catch my eye. Tall things fall into that list of stuff. I've climbed everything. Not having 700+ korok seeds is not indicative of that considering most of them are under rocks.
@Alshain01 Geez, okay. I don't know how you can make that assumption that I haven't climbed everything. For someone who has done SO MUCH, it's really weird that you're still struggling with water. I don't use the Sheikah Sensor + because it ruins my experience and really don't appreciate your condescending attitude. I beat the game long ago and am not trying to find all the Korok seeds. Nor do I have anything else to prove to you. You complained about the rain and labeled it a "bad mechanic". All you've really proven is that you haven't really learned much at all about how to play the game effectively.
The "hidden' chests are behind obvious bomb walls and under most bodies of water. No Sheikah Sensor + required.
@Alshain01 I've played for over 190 hours according to my Switch profile. I have found and completed 108/120 shrines, 300/900 Korok seeds, and have been to the peak of every mountain in the game. I have climbed EVERYTHING. I only got the full set of climbing gear 2 days ago. I did it the hard way and never felt wronged by the rain. I just powered through it or thought of a way around it.
@Alshain01 I have never been stopped by rain, nor have I ever needed to eat stamina food once I got more than 1 stamina wheel. It's not a bad mechanic. @Alshain01 You can climb in rain. You just have to pay attention to how Link climbs. It will cost you over 2x the usual stamina drain, but depending on how much climbing gear you have, you can take a couple "steps" up a climb then jump. You'll slide back down, but you will have made forward progress when just trying to climb without jumping would usually be in vain.

@Seanmyster6 Your argument relies on a "probably" and therefore is invalid until you produce actual case evidence.

@PBandSmelly The decision to put SMT in a generic-ass idol anime was also a bad idea in the first place.
