Many wonderful things came from Nintendo's first look at the Switch in a 'preview' in October 2016, One that nobody expected was the introduction of Switch enthusiast "Karen". In her debut she can be seen playing Super Mario Odyssey before being interrupted by her friends on the roof across the street; she then promptly undocks the Switch and takes it to the party.
The internet, as always, ran with it and the character has been dubbed "Nintendo Karen" due to her apparent likeness to everyone's friend who forces games on them at parties. The actress behind the role has now embraced her meme in full style, uploading the following image:
Posted to Instagram with the cheeky caption "Want to know a secret? Soon after the fitting, I went looking for the outfit". It's great to see the actress enjoying the attention she has gained. So much that she has listed "formerly nintendo karen" in her bio and has been hashtagging with the name.
Could we see "Karen" make a triumphant return at E3 this year?

Okay...
Good for her. Glad she had some fun with it.
She is the Star now.
Hopefully not. There's no point.
Forget Karen, the blond in the airport was the star of the show to me!
Rumour has it, she'll be a playable character in the next Smash Bros. game...
That's really awesome. I love it when people play along with jokes and stuff that the community make up. Also this should hopefully help further her career!
I have a super crush on Karen, my goodness 😍
@NaviAndMii: I still wanna see Kyrsta from Nintendo Minute as an unlockable character in the next Smash.
The internet will make anyone famous if you let it.
@JHDK you're entitled to your wrong opinion.
Karen amiibo available from Best Buy in limited quantities.
As a self-appointed genderbent version of Karen, I can't help but be glad about this.
Come now, everyone know Nintendo Karen is really Miyamoto in a prosthetic suit
@Capt_N Gotta be more famous than Corrin, right?
@Jack_Goetz: I think Nintendo ceased production on the Nes Mini to begin amiibo production. That explains a lot.
@PtM It's the same outfit she was wearing in the Switch video. Do you party poopers ever sleep, or just hang out on NL all night? Sheesh.
@NaviAndMii: She probably will be, if not already.
@JHDK Forget the blond in the airport, that guy who goes through his entire day without turning off his Switch was the star of the show.
KAREN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We now know posting an article about a woman will likely draw out all 9,000 NLife readers.
My excuse is I'm a healthy young man, single, & not making comments derogatory to women, nor intend to. It's all in good fun, til then.
@Nintendoer: He proved the Switch has a long battery life. Actually, if someone wanted to be nitpicky, you could argue Nintendo used subliminal messages about the battery life, implied in this commercial.
Haha yes! I have been waiting for her to do something like this. She totally needs to become a regular for Nintendo videos and an official promoter at events. I mean, who doesn't love Karen? Lol
While it would be a waste having her live at E3, its nice to see someone who has a bit part is a commercial having fun with it. Its not like she's making millions from it, so there's no harm in having some fun and interacting with people who wish to do so.
Although I would accept her maybe making a quick ironic cameo in a reel or something at E3. That I would have no problem with.
Where did the Karen name come from?
"We're drinking, Karen. We're having conversations."
That parody video was the most accurate depiction of what would occur if anyone ever actually pulled out a Switch in a social setting. Best video ever made.
Perfect waifu's don't exis-
@gatorboi352: Yeah, in social settings, such as table conversation, I keep my electronics in my pocket. I try to discourage the idea that everyone, who carries around electronics(phones, & game handhelds, especially) is going to be ignorant to others, & ignore them, playing their game/phone/etc.
Wow wee who gives a
@gatorboi352 Send me a link to that video.

@Gold_Ranger
wtf
@Capt_N
My excuse is I'm a healthy young man, single, & not making comments derogatory to women
I also enjoy hiking, cooking on weekends and love animals 😆
@JaxonH: Not hiking. Animals, yes. I admit, it does sound like what I'd imagine would make a generic dating profile tagline.
"We're drinking Karen. We're having conversations."
If you brought your Switch to a social setting that is most likely the reaction you'd get. My friends would probably grab it and throw it away.
@Gold_Ranger how is this an appropriate comment?
@Capt_N
Ignorant what ?
There is nothing wrong to play handhelds video games in public places.
I did that so many times in my favorite Mall, played my New 3DS XL on the go and people can saw me played video games.
@Anti-Matter: I'm talking about, for example, eating dinner with my family, &/or friends. Afterwards, they set, & have conversation for a bit. For me, it would be a bit rude for me to pull out my 3DS, & go at a game of Smash Bros., if I were the only person doing it. To my pseudo non-gaming family, & my non-gaming friends, it would appear as if I were being ignorant to them. Edit: Out of courtesy, & because communication is important, plus I like being up to speed on what's going on in the lives of my family, & friends. I know it sounds dorky, but that's just me.
@NaviAndMii an amiibo is also coming soon.
@JaxonH Hahaha, oh Jaxxy! If you're looking for someone to be the Dock to your Switch, maybe we could get together and increase performance to a native 1080p. And without the weird 59fps frame skip that plagued me every second of my last relationship.
who am I? Am you are me.
@Anti-Matter @Capt_N
I mean, there's a time a place for everything. You wouldn't pull out a gaming system in certain scenarios, just like you wouldn't pull out a phone and start texting in certain scenarios.
But, there are certain times where pulling out a Switch is perfectly acceptable. It's just like anything else. There is no set rules for when it is and isn't ok. You judge by keeping your finger on the pulse of the situation. I pull my Switch out and play in front of and with a whole group of engineers at work, but there are other times doing so would be inappropriate.
You just play it by ear.
@Maxz
"the Switch to your Dock"
Lol lol
No love for toilet boy from the European adverts, apparently. It's funny, he made such a strong first impression.
@Capt_N
Well... look at the situation first.
Even me as a gamer, I will not bring my video games on my working place or play my handhelds on the wrong time.
But I don't hesitate to start conversation by introduce my handhelds. I don't want to play my handhelds and ignore the other people completely. Instead, I try to communicate with them by introduce my gaming devices to certain peoples.
I have less friends in reality (tend to be alone) but I can try to communicate with other people by doing this.
@JaxonH
Of course I will not play my video games on the Wrong time and Wrong place.
Kinda inapprorite for me and for other people.
Oh, I don't play my 3DS in toilet anyway.
Both @JaxonH: @Anti-Matter:
@Anti-Matter: You have your friends on here. Like me...
Never understood that meme. No one actually has conversations at parties, they all get half drunk, argue about politics and spend most of their time staring at their phone, which just so happens to be an electronic as well.
It never was funny or relevant, just more Nintendo bias in the form of people trying to be witty.
@Oldbeardo shigeru in the shell
@NaviAndMii I just spat out my coffee.
Karen is my spirit animal
"We're drinking Karen. We're having conversations."
"We're drinking, Karen. We're having conversations."
Remember, a comma can save a life!
Who is the blond girl at the airport in the Switch reveal trailer?
@NicolausCamp: They're vampires.
Karen, where the hell did you get that game that isn't even out till the end of the year?
Don't bring it to the party, you'll get us all in trouble.
@gatorboi352 "That parody video was the most accurate depiction of what would occur if anyone ever actually pulled out a Switch in a social setting. Best video ever made."
In my experience you are dead wrong. Do you have a switch to pull out in social settings?
Nintendo trying to pitch a portable gaming console (with a 6 inch screen at that) as a social, multiplayer affair is going to go over about as well as asymmetrical dual screen gameplay did for Wii U.
People play Switch docked on a tv like any other console, or they play it in Portable mode by themselves, like any other portable. That is it.
Ehh. I guess anything can be a meme in 2016-17.
@DiscoGentleman
What I meant was, I'm the guy who brings his handhelds around even when they're really not needed. And yes, "we're having conversations" - or something along those lines - is something I've been told way too often.
The name "Karen" always brings to mind this:
I had no clue there was a meme about this actress. Glad that she's embracing it!
"Want to know a secret? Soon after the fitting, I went looking for the outfit"
Wait, I don't see anything related to Switch here. Clickbait?
"We're drinking Karen, we're having conversations"
Karen posts a picture of herself in a clothing store focusing on her chest while wearing a milky white sweater
Wherefore let all that thinketh they standeth take heed, lest they fall:
There hath no temptation taketh you but such as common to 1, 2, Milk. But Nintendo is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to Switch it up.
Wherefore, my dearly beloved N(o)lifers, flee from imaginary mammary jerking.
I speak to wise fans; judge ye what I say. The controller of gripping which we grasp, it is not the communion of the blood of Miyamoto? The console which we play, is it not the communion of the body of Iwata?
For we, being many, are one comment section, and one body. For we are all partakers of that one gaming company.
Behold Nintendo Life after the flesh: are not they which make jerking motions with the JoyCons partakers of the porcelain altar? What say I then? That the graphics is anything, or that which is offered in sacrifice to celebrity idols is anything? But I say, that the things which the purchasers sacrifice, they sacrifice to a crappy game, and not to good games. And I would not that ye should have fellowship with crappy games.
No fan can serve two masters: for either they will hate the one, and love the other; or else they will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve both good game design and mammaries. I mean mammon.
Don't let your memes stay dreams.
@Gold_Ranger Oh, you're looking for people to get together in bed with you? Host a bed party, that always does the trick!
The real question is, WHERE IS NON-SPECIFIC ACTION FIGURE???? i'll take an amiibo of him. haha
"We're drinking Karen. We're having conversations."
^ This line makes me cringe more than Karen itself. Maybe because I think when it comes to having conversation, it's more of a tacitly implied thing between people. If someone comes to a casual party with their Switch, let them bring it. Plus, it everyone's drunk enough, no one will really care.
A little self promotion never hurt. Especially for an actress. Besides , she is beautiful. It would be neat if she was really a gamer but I doubt it. She should go to E3 people will buzz around here.
@Capt_N yeah I never pull out anything in social situations like that. I love me some games, but I don't want to miss out on life
( -U-)
@Windy Her favourite video game is Donkey Kong Country (because she loves its music).
I'm asked to bring the games for parties. Heck, last social event I went to (earlier this week) I brought the Switch for the Jackbox Party Pack and it was a hit (no, it was not docked either, there was no TV in the room so we just propped up the stand and it worked fine).
Also that parody video was pretty humorous regardless.
That moment when you realize she was playing Mario Odyssey, then went outside with Mario Odyssey, then handed someone the second Joy-Con...
Maybe Karen's friends on the rooftop simply couldn't find a Switch at launch. Or maybe she just needs better friends. You know, the sort that can actually have conversations while drinking and Mario Karting.
@gatorboi352
So What with Nintendo's effort to promote about Switch ?
Business must go on.
Later Switch will become a Viral.
Like or Don't like, Switch will be a famous thing in the world.
@SteamedSquid This is so close to what I was about to say! I can't count how many fun evenings I've had where a half dozen people were drinking, having conversations and gaming at the same time. Pro tip, when you're having a party, don't ever invite the people who would say, "we're drinking, Karen, having conversations". Invite Karen.
Oh no, it's Karen coming with that Nintendo thing again.
@NicolausCamp Reminded of the time when Rachel Ray said she got inspiration from "cooking family and dog."
@gatorboi352 I'm bartending as we speak. I just pulled out my Switch to show Snipperclips to my regulars.
@Jacadamia: agreed. Like I said, I will pull out my 3DS in certain scenarios, but it depends on the individual scenarios.
She is cool. Glad for her.
@Indielink chances of that realistically being a thing you routinely do?
Better yet, chances of that realistically being a thing anyone else does either?
karen is awesome. btw, nlife: punctuation! karen is a goddess of game, not a drink.
@Gold_Ranger ...Yeah I'm removing that comment.
I'd like to see more of the toilet guy.
Never payed attention at first but is she wearing a hakama? It certainly looks inspired by one.
Are we seriously talking about this garbage because there is no new decent article to post in, my my we have sunk worse than the Titanic. Also her hair looks like Darth Vaders helmet
Go Karen lol
@NaviAndMii I'm sure there's already a Karen Mii.
Okay, i never realized she was a meme.
All I wanted was a traditional controller.
100
I would drink Karen. After the edit, I'd still drink Karen.
Can't wait for the next Karen meme, 'I used to like AT&T girl, but Karen made me Switch.'
@WiltonRoots There's an €80 add on for that so you're not stuck with using the terrible wiimote 2.0 (that aren't wiimotes because we have to move away from "wii" branding but are totally wiimotes!)
Make hay when the sun shines Karen
Sorry, but there is only one star.
So we still don't know what her real name is?
Lot of jealous haters lol
@SLIGEACH_EIRE there's no point to half the comments you make so what's your point?Lol burn!!!
^ Says the pointless troll above. ^
@NaviAndMii But what about her moveset? ya know? the attacks and especials?
@gatorboi352 I literally do it all the time.
LOL good for her! Nice when you can take the randomness of the internet and make it work for you.
Lol. that's awesome! I really like Karen so I'm happy she's having a good time with her meme.
I think it's great when something fun, like having an unofficial mascot, comes out of a good idea and an enthusiastic fan base. Kind of reminds me of all the fan art that came out of "Twitch plays Pokemon."
Hopefully she gets to be in more commercials.
@Indielink my second question still stands. The answer: no body.
I love Mary Elizabeth Winstead. One of the most underrated actresses out there.
@gatorboi352 I had someone in a group of grad students pull theirs out last week. Also showing off Snipperclips. All of the guys friends were super into it. We're trying to get Kart tournaments set up once the game comes out next week.
@NaviAndMii
Yeah, her and Non-Specific Action Figure
@gatorboi352
Keep saying Nobody ever want to play Switch. But the fact there are a lot of people carry their Switch in public, not just only in commercial.
You can deny the fact but it will keep biting you as Switch sales keep growing and the popularity is increasing.
Why don't you take a look outside and find at least some people who has interest with Nintendo stuffs ?
@WiltonRoots
Joy Cons are your traditional controller. Just plug in your Switch, you will have "ps vita 2" style. Afraid it will be gimmick or what , who cares ? Just treat your Joy Cons as a tradional controller. Don't swing or try to make Motion if you don't like.
But let be honest, playing with motion is kinda fun.
I would ammend the article like this
"In her debut she can be seen playing [in front of an empty screen which got] Super Mario Odyssey [superimposed on it in postproduction]"
@Anti-Matter I still haven't got one yet, but hopefully will get one soon. I'm quite keen to try the joycons. I was being sarcastic and poking fun at the people who demand the predictable.
@Cosats well that is some catchy music
@Anti-Matter no, I just don't see people playing Switch, regularly, in social/group settings in portable mode. It's a novelty factor. It's like "hey check this out" kinda thing. It's not a daily "this is what I'm going to go back to every single day and is why we all buy the system" kind of feature.
That's what I mean.
@gatorboi352
What a pity of you.
I ever saw some people in my country bring Switch on the go. Kids and Young adult. Even I have two students owned Neon Switch, showed to me if they owned the thing.
Also, I ever had a chance to try 1 2 Switch while there were a young girl customer bought Grey Switch, tried 1 2 Switch before she brought her Switch purchase to her home (She came with her Daddy).
Oh... playing Switch in Social group is Not a Novelty. It's a Culture. You just don't like some people habits like that, keep defending playing on the go with other people = Not Cool, because you said so. You said Novelty factor, I said it's a Trend. It will become a new Trendsetter.
@Anti-Matter "Oh... playing Switch in Social group is Not a Novelty. It's a Culture."
How are you qualifying this statement? What facts or evidence are you basing this on?
@gatorboi352 I think if you don't see people playing Switch regularly in social settings it just means the people you know are probably not oblivious self-absorbed technophiles like Karen, here.
FWIW, I've never seen anyone playing 3DS OR Pokemon Go either. back at the height when Pokemon Go was a thing, and the internet was talking about how you couldn't go ANYWHERE without seeing crowds hunting Pokemon, I saw not a single person doing any such thing, anywhere. One would never know Go existed at all around here. So even when something happens EVERYWHERE it might seem like nowhere.
Though people only do things in public if it's perceived as cool/popular. If Switch gets a reputation as being popular you'll see it a lot (I probably wont, not even Pokemon did that here, but others will...) If it's perceived as dorky then you won't.
@Emperor-Palpsy That is a nightmare-inducing gif.
@NEStalgia "FWIW, I've never seen anyone playing 3DS OR Pokemon Go either."
That's crazy! Man I would see people playing GO literally everywhere I went, like multiple cities too. That game IMO had a cultural and social impact of something like Wii Sports.
@gatorboi352
In Japan, you will oftenly see young man or woman carry 3DS or ps vita or maybe smartphone. They carry the gadget anywhere, anyplace, anytime.
They are NOT Dorky / Nerd / whatever you said.
That's a habit in Japan.
@gatorboi352 Yeah, everyone keeps telling me the same thing. I don't get it, never saw a single one. There simply WAS no Pokemon Go here. It didn't exist. Maybe in the elementary schools that were Gyms it did, I never quite felt comfortable hanging around elementary schools alone to find out I'm sure the kids were into it. But there were otherwise no crowds, no people randomly Pokemoning in public places....anybody looking at their phone was clearly texting. There was one guy walking his dog that MAY have been checking for a Pokemon once...I couldn't tell. But if he was, he was the only one I saw.
Which is actually probably a positive
@NEStalgia
It's Positive 100% for Japan, as the country of Video Games.
Young kids, young adult, elder know about video games in Japan.
@Anti-Matter That used to be true, but these days it seems like Japan's gone mobile-crazy, and particularly fond of gambling mechanics, and real games have become more and more niche there (almost moreso than here in the US!) I'm hoping that fad will reverse sometime soon.
@whodatninja It is the internet...everything is a meme and porn.
@Anti-Matter yeah, never said dorky or nerdy. I think you're injecting emotion into a discussion where there is none.
What I'm saying is it's not something widely adopted. What i also always speak towards is the Western market. A market I'm actually a part of. A market also much larger than the Japanese market.
@gatorboi352
No need to worry.
American has same enthusiast as Japanese people.
I'm sure the Hype of Switch will slowly arrousing American gamers.
Just same as Japanese cultures invades America (Cosplay, Anime, Games, Japanese franchise Adaptation, etc)
Let's try this.
You can introduce your gaming device to your friends or other peoples or relatives who has never knew about gaming. Keep going with your effort.
@NEStalgia
Ah..... I have no idea to say.
What happens with majorly peoples in the world ?
The biggest rival of all is Smartphone games.
It's sad but true, they don't care anymore with complex games like used to be...
They become casual, never care with so complicated games that requires a little bit thinking to solve the games.
If I become a part of Casuals like that, I would rather die, regretting to be born with those pathethic mindset and lousy lifestyle like that.
Phew... luckily I was born with different mindset. The mindset that still maintaining tradition to become Console / Handheld gamer. I call it an Everlasting hobbies. Even already 30++ years ago, I still stay on Nintendo side and prefer play their games on actual consoles rather than playing crappy mobile games.
@gatorboi352 I think I was the one that said 'dorky' he was referring to actually. But handheld gaming in general here never became a big thing and gained a perception as being for kids. Though mobile gaming, especially after Go (for you lucky people to whom the game existed in your zone.. . ) could induce some change there. The fact that Switch actually looks like a piece of electronics and the (in hindsight probably smart) home console you can take with you" branding rather than handheld branding (and openly declaring "3DS is a great entry option for kids" to segment Switch), I think it might be more common to see a Switch in the wild. It's not going to be Japan that a bunch of people walk around with a game device at the ready, but it might not be odd or strange to see someone out and about with one. And lets face it, if you have a nerd-oriented office, MK lunches ARE going to be a thing. Playstations are now associated with greasy teenagers and dropouts. Switch I think could easily become a "socially acceptable" device for the young professional class. It's briefcase/messenger-bag chic.
@Ryu_Niiyama Often, both at the same time.
@Anti-Matter Yeah I mean I get if it's not your hobby you're not going to spend a lot of time and money on it. And gaming is expensive. But the rise of the phone games, at least in the Japanese context, seems more like gambling addiction than casual gaming. People dedicate rediculous amounts of time and money into these thoughtless games, and it looks a lot more like slot machine (or pachislot in Japan) mentality than anything else.
@NEStalgia
No wonder there are a lot of "Sexy" Pachinko machines on Japan.
Put some Naughty and Sexy girls pictures, adult males will come and play it like Zombie.
Sadly, even some Japanese still adore with Naughty Moe looking girls more than Cute Handsome boys like my Avatar ( I created by myself, inspired by Nendoroid looking , K-1 Pocket GBA and Animal Boxing NDS )
@NEStalgia shudder...let me keep my innocence for a little while longer.
@Ryu_Niiyama You're on the internet, it's a little late for that! This is the home of Senran Kagura and HD Rumble after all....
@Anti-Matter Yeah, well, as they say, prostitution is the oldest profession. Makes sense digital cartoon pimping would be the most successful modern profession I guess? To be fair, I don't think any country goes even close to half way as obsessed with that (at least not openly) as Japan does though! I mean I doubt anybody could watch that Senran Kagura video and think "oh, I bet this came from from Norway!"
@Ryu_Niiyama Yeah pretty much. With Karen, luckily it was the first
@Gamecubed
Dump doe's "friends".
@whodatninja
I wouldn't be so sure...
Dem peeps are insane yo. Dey insane.
