@SmaggTheSmug "They're pushing the female default and will have a surprised Pikachu face when players invariably will pick the male default 2/3rds of the time."
Honestly, I would argue the opposite. When games have a male/female choice, I've seen people go Female like 75% of the time. For female players, they go their own gender cause a lot of games only have male main characters so they take every chance they can get to go female while for male players, well you can probably guess why. 🤣
@Crono1973 I mean why wouldn't they recommend it? Like yes it's not a super amazing port but they are still good games, it's not super buggy, and it's still a good way to play it legally on modern hardware.
Just because it's not the ideal way to play it doesn't mean it shouldn't be played at all especially if this is your only option to play it and/or you want portability. It would be different if this was actually a terrible broken and buggy port but it's not, it's still better than playing the games on original hardware even if it's not the best way to play it in general.
@Snakesglowcaps As I told the other person above, you missed the point. I never was saying that this would be cheaper than previous generations, I'm just saying this is cheaper than if they followed the same methods they have since Gen 1 of releasing a 3rd game in this specific generation.
The new method is the cheaper way for this specific generation, not the cheapest games overall.
@Lemonyoshi Well yeah, the previous generations are cheaper still but my point wasn't "this is cheaper than last gen", my point is "this is cheaper than if they still did the same thing as last gen using this gen's prices".
It's a more expensive generation sure but it could be an even more expensive one if they did a 3rd fully priced separate game instead of switching to a more modern DLC delivery method for the same content.
@Tempestryke You completely missed my point, I was saying if they continued doing 3rd games this generation it would've been more expensive.
Yes the old games are cheaper but that has nothing to do with the point I'm making, I'm just saying them switching to DLC now would be cheaper than if they kept doing 3rd games in this specific generation if they followed the same pattern they always have.
Honestly this is a good move from them imho. It will actually end up being cheaper this generation compared to the old way of having an "definitive 3rd/ultra/etc version".
Instead of paying $60 for Sword or Shield then another $60 for Ultra Sword or Ultra Shield, a total of $120, you only pay $60 for the base game and an extra $30 for the Pass, a total of $90. You save $30 over the old way.
Also not to mention, no need to use a new save like the previous way.
While the game selection itself is fine, this feels really lackluster. I totally understood when they said they would start releasing games in batches irregularly instead of 3 each month, every month but for said batch to be only 2 months worth of games after a 3 month wait is even worse than what we had before.
You should at the very least match the amount of games the old monthly system would've gave (9 games), not give us even less than we would've got if you never changed the system.
1st cup paid 999 Nintendo Points ($9.99) in March 2019 2nd cup in April paid the same 3rd cup in May gave the GameBoy theme 4th cup in June paid the 999 points 5th cup in July was Splatoon theme 6th cup in August was Fire Emblem theme
@Dakotastomp The entire online feature is built on an early access API (Steam Networking API 2.0) that Valve made which Gears is currently the only company using, the entire backbone of the online feature is built around this Steam exclusive beta API which runs on Valve's servers so they would have to replace it somehow to make it work on console or GOG since Valve is probably not gonna put a Steam API on another platform.
It would most likely be very hard and time-consuming to swap out considering it's literally using Valve's servers as the backbone. They even said it wouldn't have been 50 players if not for Valve so even if they did replace it, it might be way less people at once.
Plus they might have a exclusivity deal for online with Valve considering they got early access.
@Dakotastomp Nyakuza, possibly yes. Online likely no as it uses Steam's servers, not their own so it's not even on other PC versions, it coming to console would be even more unlikely unless they completely redo the server backend which would be too expensive for a tiny indie studio.
1. Only includes first DLC, no word yet on if second DLC (Nyakuza Metro + Online Party) will ever come to the Switch. Even if it does, it most likely will drop the Online mode like the GOG PC version did and only include Nyakuza Metro.
2. It's been confirmed to run at 720p30 in docked mode, portable will be even lower resolution but still 30 FPS according to the devs vs 60FPS on the PC version.
3. Only the retail release is $40 since the DLC is included as part of the price (it's still downloaded separately though, not on the cart), the Digital eShop version uses the same setup as PC, buy the game at $30 and spend $5 on the DLC. You are paying a $5 premium for a physical copy but they are otherwise the same price between both versions once you account for bundling vs no bundling.
If you can only buy one version and you own a device that can handle it, I would still suggest buying it on Steam on PC for the higher resolution, frame rate, online, extra chapter, and the amazing mod support which greatly expands the game with new levels, abilities, characters, and more. Still the Switch version should be fine if you really want to smug dance on the go or only own a Switch as long as it ends up being a stable 30FPS at least.
Honestly, I like this decision. I prefer single-player experiences so it's nice for once a developer is actually putting thought into it instead of "Multiplayer is the main mode so let's just throw together the single player" or not include a single player at all.
Does it suck we lost the other franchises? Yes but consider this basically seems like a one-off. I would rather they try something different and maybe fail than pump out basically the same game every time. All 3 racing games have been more unique than Mario Kart imho and each in very different ways.
My only actual complaint about the game is why they couldn't keep the Transform sections, the team based gimmick is a nice change but they can co-exist, they didn't need to ditch one for the other.
@NotTelevision You would be surprised, literally everyone I know said the trailer was fine EXCEPT the design but they still jumped on the hate bandwagon cause the design alone, so yes people will give flack to a trailer merely based on design and completely ignore the rest because they hate the design that much.
I love how basically every comment here is "This wouldn't be possible because it would NEED to run in the background"
Does everyone forget Discord isn't just voice chat in games? Everyone I know ONLY uses it for the massive servers for niche communities (most non-game related even) with lots of text chat channels.
Discord could easily 100% make an app without Nintendo giving their blessing if it was text chat only since that could be done with nothing running in the background. When you want to chat with someone, you close your game and open the Discord app and just start chatting. They could even integrate the Album so you could upload your screenshots/videos directly into a channel.
And heck, that could technically still support voice chat also, it would just only work inside the app which is completely fine for most use cases. If you are simply calling your friends, you don't necessarily need to be in a game unless the call is about the game.
I can't be the only one that glanced at the article, saw "Horizon" and "Playground" next to each other, and questioned why this article was on a Nintendo site. (Xbox Exclusive Forza Horizon is made by Playground Games)
Honestly this whole thing is a big mess. As a filter itself, I don't think it's terrible but when you consider everything else, the devs really cheaped out on this.
1. A Hat In Time (another "Banjo-inspired" game that was kickstarted) only raised 12% of what Playtonic did (about $300,000 vs $2.3 million) and has a smaller dev team (32 vs about 15). Meanwhile they released a better looking N64 mode that wasn't just a filter on top but some models including the main character were redone to be low-poly. 2. They only added this after asking for $100,000 more dollars on their Kickstarter. 3. The filter doesn't even look like N64 at all, it does look retro but definitely not N64 and they promised in the Kickstarter "N64 Mode"
Pretty bad when a game studio with a much smaller team and budget can do a way better implementation, especially since they didn't ask for extra money to do it.
While I agree with others here about preferring Chronicles, SEGA localizing any Puyo game would be great news. The more games they localize, the more likely they will continue to localize down the line.
I really wish Hori would just release a standard design for this, why would I want a super fancy design like this if there's no matching one for the Right JoyCon?

Just a heads up, the devs confirmed in their official Discord that the main character is non-binary so it should be they/them, not he.
