Re: Peter Molyneux Wants More From 'Lacklustre Wii U'

BJQ1972

@Henmii You are not wrong - Spore had nothing to do with Molyneux, it was developed by Will Wright.

Since Black and White, Lionhead studios have produced (Molyneux's role in each title is in brackets):-
Fable (2004) (designer)
Fable: The Lost Chapters (2005) (designer)
The Movies (2005) (executive designer)
Black & White 2 (2005) (lead designer)
The Movies: Stunts & Effects (2006) (executive designer)
Black & White 2: Battle of the Gods (2006) (lead designer)
Fable II (2008) (lead designer)
Fable III (2010) (lead designer)
Milo and Kate (formerly known as The Dmitri Project) (cancelled) (lead designer)
Fable: The Journey (TBA)

His games do nothing for me, but pretending they don't exist makes no sense.

Re: Organise Your Home Menu With New 3DS Update

BJQ1972

@GreenSpleen The number of available tiles on the home screen increases over time as you fill it up - I'm not sure what the limit is, but it is unlikely that you would be getting to the same situation that occurred with the Wii - don't forget that all 3DS downloads are saved to the SD card anyway.

I agree that an SD card menu is essential for DSiWare downloads though.

Re: Marth's Fire Emblem: Awakening DLC Debut Confirmed

BJQ1972

As I said above Nintendo have said that it will be a new adventure with a character from a previous game - it will amost certainly not be on the Cartridge as an unlockable - I look forward to hearing complaints about the file size when the DLC does arrive.

Think about mastering time for cartridges etc - they don't finish coding the game the day before the cartridges hits the shops - it takes a while. While the cartridge is in production they will still be working on the DLC - it wouldn't surprise me if it was even delayed a little knowing Nintendo's track record.

Re: Marth's Fire Emblem: Awakening DLC Debut Confirmed

BJQ1972

In the Nintendo Direct presentation, Satoru Iwata said that the DLC was quite substantial, and would significantly increase the lifespan of the game - so it might be a bit early to dismiss it as overpriced etc.

Edit : Just had a look back at what was actually said and it was that each item of DLC would be 'a new map, with a new adventure where you are joined by a character from a previous game in the series' - so in this case Marth joins the party for the new adventure.

Re: Out Today: Xenoblade Chronicles (North America)

BJQ1972

@Kelvin That's why I picked Game Of Thrones as an example - because it features a variety of regional British accents whereas Eastenders usually only has cockney accents.

I wish they would put the little flags next to to people's usernames again on this site.

Re: Out Today: Xenoblade Chronicles (North America)

BJQ1972

@shadowkaby How would you like it be localised? It is in English, and in general it is considered that 'fantasy' dialogue works better with English accents. That's why, for example, HBO's Game of Thrones uses English actors etc. even though it is a US TV series based on American books.

Re: Review: Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure (3DS)

BJQ1972

I feel guilty about not buying this, because I think it's important to support games like this to ensure that they get made in the future - but I just can't get away from the feeling that it will drop in price very quickly, and so in a couple of weeks I'll be able to pick it up for 15GBP.

Re: Gears of War Developer Expects Wii U Success

BJQ1972

Considering what Epic Games, and Mark Rein in particular, said about the Wii this represents a significant shift. If Wii U runs Unreal Engine 3, and rumours that Nintendo are willing to tweak the specs so that it can run Unreal Engine 4 are true, we might finally see decent third party support again.
If developers optimise their games to take full use of the controller, and ensure that the Wii U version is the version to buy it can only mean good things for the future.

Re: Review: Everdrive 64

BJQ1972

@theblackdragon - I'm not sure about the legalities in the US, but it is very much a grey area whether making a back-up copy of a game cartridge you own is legal or not. It is possibly legal to make a back-up copy of software, but to do so by circumventing copy protection is not, I believe.

It seems that Nintendo Life is endorsing a product that could well be considered illegal in the UK.

Re: GAME Not Stocking Tekken 3D Prime Edition

BJQ1972

This sort of thing shows what is wrong with the games industry. It reads like Game are saying they haven't got it in for launch, so they will not be stocking it at all. Why should games have such a limited retail - Nintendo have shown this generation that a game can sell consistently well for a couple of years so why hasn't the rest of the industry got the message?

Re: King of Fighters '97 Strikes Wii VC in Europe Next Week

BJQ1972

@LordTendoboy I think the Megs in that picture is Mbits rather than MBytes, so you can divide that number by 8. I think the games are then reduced in size further by compressing any audio.

Rondo of Blood is the same - the audio on the game discs was encoded as WAVs, and so is converted to a compressed format for the download release.

Edit: on second thoughts thoughts that might be the box art for the CD version, so it may mean 460MB, but the same principle as the Rondo Of Blood example applies.

Re: Review: 3DS Circle Pad Pro

BJQ1972

So, let me ask the people who still believe a redesign of the 3DS is imminent - are you willing to accept that you are wrong yet? Of course, the console will be redesigned at some point in its lifetime and, quite possibly, it will come with a second analogue stick, but not anywhere near the timescale you people predicted.

Re: Icon Games Breaks WiiWare Sales Figures Silence

BJQ1972

So because you don't like the games they develop and Nintendo have done absolutely NOTHING to promote the WiiWare service and any of its games the developer should shut down, and the people who work there should lose their jobs?

Re: Review: Soccer Up! (WiiWare)

BJQ1972

@theblackdragon - reading the review and looking at NLs scoring policy the minimum score this game should have got is a 4, isn't it?

As a counter argument to your statement about people who won't have played previous similar games - imagine if this was Ikaruga or Radiant Silvergun, and a reviewer had never played a 2D shooter before - I have no doubt these games would be awarded similarly low scores. Does that make them bad games? No.

What reviews like this do tend to do is skew the Metacritic average which is increasingly becoming a major factor in how people perceive a game.

Re: Review: Soccer Up! (WiiWare)

BJQ1972

@theblackdragon - I don't think reading the comments so far that the reviewer is being attacked - simply questioning whether he is the best choice to review this type of game. EnjoyUp are marketing the game as harking back to games like Match Day, Sensi etc - in my opinion the review should have referenced these titles and judged it on how it compares to them.

At the end of the day, anybody looking at this review won't take into account the user feedback - they will simply look at the 1/10 and adjudge the game to be a stinker.

Re: Review: Soccer Up! (WiiWare)

BJQ1972

Everybody who was expecting a Sensi/Kick Off update seems to be reasonably positive - a US critic, who I would guess has not played these classic 90s style football games is not.

Re: Review: Soccer Up! (WiiWare)

BJQ1972

I think most people who would be looking to buy this game would do so because if its apparent similarity to Sensible Soccer and Kick Off. How does it compare to those games in terms of gameplay and controls?

Has the reviewer actually played those games as a reference point?

Re: Happy 122nd Birthday to Nintendo

BJQ1972

@ 15.daznsaz - the previous president of Nintendo, before Satoru Iwata, was Hiroshi Yamauchi, who is a member of the family that founded Nintendo. I believe he is still one of Nintendo's major shareholders.

Re: Talking Point: The Second Circle Pad and the 3DS Evolution

BJQ1972

@Lionsgate - that was meant to be humorous, right - about Nintendo's unwillingness to embrace modern gaming trends? You are talking about The same Nintendo that pioneered the diamond shaped button layout, analogue sticks, rumble, touch screen games, and up until the last generation always exceeded their competitor's consoles in terms of power?

Re: Talking Point: The Second Circle Pad and the 3DS Evolution

BJQ1972

It's just an add on to increase functionality for one game - read the many comments online about painful hands after playing Monster Hunter PSP with your hand in a claw like position for hours.

Is the Wii Zapper hard wired to the remote now or is it still a removable peripheral? Is the DS paddle controller now integrated in a DS redesign? No.

Does the fact the Remote+ now exists render the Remote/motion+ combo obsolete? No.

Did any of the redesigns of consoles such as the DS, Xbox360 or PS3 render previous versions obsolete? No.

So why does everybody assume that this circle pad expansion means that a redesign of the 3DS is not only imminent, but will render the existing 3DS obsolete?

Is it not possible that if you take the time to relax, drink a cup of tea, put your feet up that you may realise that you are all overreacting a little bit?

Re: Better Late Than Never, Europe's 3DS Ambassador Tool is Here

BJQ1972

@moosa - it is because it is yet another example of what seems to be endemic at Nintendo at the moment. It seems that every time Nintendo hit the top they implode - these little things undermine consumer confidence, and I think they've got a huge fight on their hands to turn this situation around.

Re: Analogue Stick Add-On for 3DS Revealed

BJQ1972

I think it looks fine. It increases the functionality of the 3DS and is removable after you finish playing the games that support it.

Is it any different from Nintendo releasing the Classic Controller Pro with Monster Hunter Tri? Or more relevantly the paddle controller that was released with Space Invaders and Arkanoid on the DS? Did people start howling that this was an sign of an imminent redesign with a paddle controller built in?

Why can't a handheld have peripherals and attachments?

Re: Wii Owners Encounter Xenoblade Disc Read Errors

BJQ1972

@cipher. Not this article, no, but this report was picked up by another site, which was then picked up by another site who described it as a plague. NintendoLife is, in this case, patient Zero for yet more sensationalist reporting about a known problem with the Wii disc drive.

Re: Wii Owners Encounter Xenoblade Disc Read Errors

BJQ1972

My nephew had a problem with Metroid other M. As people have said a quick clean with the official kit and it's worked fine since.

No problem for me with Xenoblade either (touch wood).

Edit: A quick look at google about the error and the first match is this story, so it's not exactly plaguing Wii owners is it? Reporting it as such is a bit like waking up with a sniffle and assuming the world has been wiped out by a virus overnight and you've turned into Charlton Heston (or Will Smith for younger readers).

Re: Talking Point: The Great Nintendo 3DS Price Drop Debate

BJQ1972

It will be very interesting to see how the PSVita does at retail. Don't forget that sony's last iteration of the PSP has already been discontinued, so it could indicate that the handheld market has pretty much been destroyed by iOS etc.

I suspect nintendo's current problems with the 3DS are a combination of poor marketing, not enough 1st and 3rd party support, and initial pricing.

To all the people who want 79p games - do you honestly believe any of them can match a typical Nintendo 1st party game? I have found that none of the many games I have downloaded on my iPad are worth more than 5 minutes play - they are either overly simplistic or gimped by the lack of any physical controls.

Another possible issue that no one seems to pick up on is resistance to 3D adoption in general. I have never known a new technology spoken about with such vitriol, whether it is TV, movies or games it seems that most people want 3D to fail.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Makes Bold Move with the 3DS

BJQ1972

I cannot comprehend why Nintendo are struggling with this sensational hardware.

It seems like people are going out of their way to NOT play DS games on it. It is backwards compatible and so has a huge back catalogue of games. Yes, you could argue that you could play Solatorobo on your old DS, but it just makes no sense to me.

It's like buying a 3dtv and refusing to watch anything other than 3d on it.
