Re: Review: Pokémon Picross (3DS eShop)

Another example of a game I'd happily pay a few dollars for, but I won't waste my time if I have to wait or pay a bunch of money for it. This F2P will very quickly drive me away from this platform; I want to buy a game and play it.

@Unca_Lz

Time is absolutely money. If I spend hours filling out surveys, I guarantee I can make more money than the value of the resulting rewards in any number of ways. The time/money equation comes into play every time anybody decides whether to do something myself or hire somebody to do it for them (e.g. look after the lawn, clean the house). In this case, work for a few hours and have enough extra $ to buy every one of those rewards (and probably another 3DS too if you've got a good job), or spend the same time filling in surveys and get one of them?

What made it worthwhile for me were the exclusives, such as the cart cases and last year's soundtrack.

Disappointed. I only have a 3DS, and I either own the reward games or have no interest in them.

They're not free - it takes a lot of time to fill out those surveys, and my time is valuable. With platinum being non-exclusive download-only and the steady reduction of physical rewards in general, I'm probably done with CN.

Re: Review: 10-in-1: Arcade Collection (3DS eShop)

AlGator

I love old arcade games so I bought this. 6/10 and $2.99 are about right. The games are fun in short bursts but a couple of them could have stood more testing - for example, Monkey Ninja is far too easy and I gave up after 30 minutes without dying. But it's worth it for those times when you need a few minutes of distraction.

Re: Talking Point: This Fan's Tragic Tale Highlights The Problem With Nintendo's Approach To Download Purchases

Nintendo's backwards thinking on this dramatically impacts the money I spend on the eShop. In fact, at this point I've just about stopped spending money on it, except for an occasional very cheap game. I'm not going to take the risk of losing those games if my 3DS is lost or stolen. The lack of an account system is a major part of my decision not to buy a Wii U. Wake up, Nintendo!

@jayblue, putting the games on a memory card won't help you, because you can't put that card into another system and play those games.

Re: Talking Point: The Emergence of Download-Only Retail Games

AlGator

I will not buy a full-price digital download retail game, because of the loss/breakage of the system issue (I do buy some eShop games but limit those for the same reason). If they fix that, I'd consider buying some if some of the savings of distributing games this way was passed on to me.

Re: Goodbye Galaxy Games Responds To Renegade Kid's Piracy Claims

I bought the first Dementium game. I didn't buy the second because I found some of the design decisions in the first one so frustrating that I didn't get past the first few levels - for example, getting killed in a boss fight required replaying the entire level (sometimes quite a long or challenging level, 15 minutes or more) to get back to it. Only to die again and again until you figure out the trick. Or look at a FAQ and get lucky the first time, and that shouldn't be necessary to enjoy a game.

I do not buy music with DRM, ever. I know how to make bit-perfect copies of CDs and DVSs, and yet I spend plenty of money on music and movies and never pirate them. DRM (meaning that if Nintendo ever goes out of business I'm out of luck and lose all my games) and lack of an account system (meaning that if something happens to my 3DS I may never get my games back) dramatically cut back the money I spend on the eShop. Without DRM I'd spend far more, and even an account system would help. If you think you can't lose everything when you're stuck with DRM, Google the Circuit City DIVX fiasco, anything you bought in that format couldn't be played after August 2001. At least with a cartridge, if I can find a system that will play it, I can play the game - I can still use my old GameBoy carts after 20 years with no worries.

No multiplayer is a deal-breaker for me. The best fun with the old DS Clubhouse Games is when I play it with the kids and grandchildren (we're commonly playing 3 and 4 player games), so I'll stick with that.

Re: Review: Boulder Dash-XL 3D (3DS)

I've been playing this all the way back to the early '80s on my Atari 800. I still like the GBA version of it, and I'll pick up this 3DS version if it comes to the USA at a reasonable price.
