A new report from Bloomberg reveals that the Guillemot family and Tencent may currently be in talks to move select Ubisoft assets over to a brand-new venture (thanks, VGC).
Following a lengthy period in which Ubisoft has struggled in the midst of a rapidly declining share price, the move is supposedly said to serve two purposes: to boost the company's value and to provide Tencent with more control over Ubisoft's IP, thus increasing its gaming presence outside of China.
Deliberations are said to be ongoing with no final decision made at the time of writing, though Ubisoft's share price has seen a minor bump of around 4.3% following the publication of Bloomberg's article. It's also not known what might happen to the IP that Ubisoft decides not to migrate over.
Ubisoft recently announced a second delay for its next major entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise: Assassin's Creed Shadows, now scheduled for 20th March 2025. Given Ubisoft's apparent desire to hold the game back until it's in tip-top shape, many are citing the title as a "make or break" moment for the company.
One of Ubisoft's best games in recent years, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, sadly did not reach sales expectations when it launched in January 2024. This led to the development team being disbanded, with most staff members moved to other projects within the company.
Just recently, the US Department of Defense officially added Tencent to the federal register of companies deemed to have links to the Chinese military. Tencent responded to the move and stated that it was a "misunderstanding".
What do you make of this latest development regarding Ubisoft? Could it be the right move? Let us know your thoughts with a comment down below.

Ubisoft are finished, like I said in another article on this site, they'll be made an example of so other developers and studios don't follow the same path.
Ubisoft has to go so the gaming industry can survive and heal. The gaming industry will have to get comfortable without Ubisoft there, attack your customers and this is the result.
Idk I feel like they'll carry on but we shall see
@Reztobi haha sorry but you can't believe that Ubisoft is the reason that the industry is in a crisis? It's not a good thing that tencent is now taking over. why would you want one of the biggest and most creedy companies in the world, controlled by a corrupt dictatorship country to take over?
I've enjoyed quite a few of UbiSofts games in the past, but I wouldn't consider it a personal loss if they went under.
I will say, though, that its a headache to me that after many credible accusations of poor working conditions with crunch, poor leadership and sexual abuse, the house of cards falls down at a prime time for the worst gamers out there to say "Yeah! That's for attacking your customers [by trying to make us play as a woman or a black guy]!".
I don't think Ubisoft deserves any sympathy, but some people are going to have utterly asinine takes on the why of it all when/if Ubisoft falls apart.
It's because the games they've made in recent years haven't been all that good, and the few good ones they've made haven't been marketed all that well.
Maybe if they didn’t discount their games two weeks after release, they wouldn’t have gotten into this mess. Notice Nintendo never drops the price of their games. And when they ever go on sale, it’s a year plus after release.
Don’t devalue your product. Also, um. Make a good product.
Two wrong’uns don’t make a right.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 is going to save Ubi, as soon as it releases in 2019.

@AgentGuapo I'm a therapist and honestly Nintendo are one of my main influences in my business. I never do free trials or offer discount bundles or any of that stuff - I offer something really good and people who value my work pay me. Sometimes I don't have as many clients as I'd like, but all the clients I have I absolutely love working with.
I'm glad I opted out of race-to-the-bottom pricing and purchasing a long time ago - it means I have less stuff but I'm happy and all my stuff and experiences are so much more valuable.
Yeah, have doubts this would be for the best... and while there are several reasons why Ubisoft is in the current situation I'd say the biggest one is that they've accustomed people to wait for their way too fast and big discounts as other have already mentioned here and previously!
How the mighty have fallen… I always thought Ubisoft was the best of the major publishers (better than EA and Activision). I think they the more interesting games and IP. But a few years back they became a company that just churned out generic open world action games. I was hoping that taking the company private could maybe allow them to refocus and rebuild a bit of their original spirit. Hopefully that can still happen, since we don’t know exactly what this means.
This is why you don't sell out to Tencent.
ngl, I am not gonna shed a tear about this, lol. kinda funny tho, they believed people would wanna buy their quadruple A games, lmfao
This has been like one of those cartoon bits where Ubisoft ran through an absurd obstacle course to escape Vivendi only to jump right into Tencent's mouth. I can't say I'm terribly worried about Ubisoft's eventual fate, but it's always jarring to see one of an industry's big fish get eaten by an even bigger fish.
It's a pipe dream but I'd love Nintendo to buy Rayman and the Rabbids ip's.
I've enjoyed a lot of Ubisoft games over the years. It will make me sad if this actually happens. Oh well. I'll just have to wait every five years for SUCKERPUNCH to make a better Assassin's Creed game.
Ubisoft may be dying.
GOOD.
So long, and thanks for all the heavy discounts.
This is what happens when you keep canceling projects that could have actually been good for your company and brand.
I tried supporting Ubisoft as much as I could but they haven't really released much on the Switch... I think I've bought every Ubisoft title outside Just Dance and Rabbids Party and yes that includes their board/card games and even Roller Champions which actually was pretty fun.
After what they did with XDefiant, I cant say I feel sorry for them.
@Viagro Amen to that bro! HAving that sort of integrity, gives quality to your service!
Tencent's boicot on Ubisoft paid off, and since Ubisoft is filled with activists now instead of developers, this is what will happen, it's going to be teared apart.
good riddance to bad rubbish.
I hope the Guillemot family gets used to the idea of not owning Ubisoft.
It's so fascinating to see Ubisoft get reduced from an industry giant to this almost pitiable figure in so short a time. I don't usually buy their stuff, but I got Lost Crown from that Best Buy sale last month and it's stellar so far - it's a shame that team and its employees seem to have an uncertain future.
Ubisoft and Tencent in the same story? There's a very appropriate, somewhat harsh Norm Macdonald quote for that.
That family is going to get another chance for a gaming company?
I think Ubisoft makes good games but they have trained us to wait a few months after release for their games to be like 80% off. It's just bad for business.
They’ve had their ups and downs, but It’s amazing how quickly Ubisoft went from a decent games developer to an absolute joke. After Star Wars Outlaws and the upcoming AC Shadows (among other games), they deserve every bit of it, it’s all self inflicted, you reap what you sow.
Heck, who knows? Maybe Tencent will be the change for the better for Ubisoft.
So let me see if I got this right. Ubisoft will move some of its IPs to Tencent in an attempt to raise Ubisoft's value? Wouldn't that devalue Ubisoft? Seems to me the Guillemot family is looking to sell out and cut losses to me, but I may have misunderstood.
I've got a baaaad feeling about this.
But what about the Puffy's Saga reboot?
