@Snaplocket Oh settle down, I have nothing against Banjo-Kazooie, I'm just pointing out that "heavily associated with Nintendo for a long time" doesn't really mean much, in this context.
They were one of the more highly-requested inclusions by the old-school Nintendo crowd, so I'm glad the weird bear-bird hybrid character got in.
@TheFrenchiestFry In a perfect world, Demi-Fiend and Monster Hunter would be able to fight to the death in Smash Ultimate. And Shantae would finally get the chance to flex her cool animal transformations against Rayman.
@Snaplocket Sure thing. And I hate anime girls so Xenoblade 2 is absolute trash as well. While I'm at it, may as well brand shooters as garbage because I don't like them.
Are Chibi Robo or the guys from Golden Sun that logical though? The arguement seems to be they are Nintendo characters therefore they should be added and not much else, I wouldn't even say they are the biggest Ninty games missing from the roster or add to it's eccentricity to it like Style Savvy, Nintendogs or Ring Fit Adventure would.
The issue with Joker to me is more that Ninty should have known better to include Joker as it was clearly gonna signal to fans that Persona 5 on Switch was likely setting up a fail if it didn't come.
In any case this seems like an argy bargy for the Smash thread or one of the dozens Smash dlc threads rather than here.
@Snaplocket Duck Hunt was a beloved and massive selling game (seriously to this day still it has sold more than any game from Zelda, Kirby, Metroid etc) and has a cool fighting mechanic which adds to the legacy and quirkiness of the roster and Dark Pit is just an echo fighter so there's no real harm with their inclusion. Those are different to Chibi Robo where it wasn't even popular to begin with to warrant creating a new fighter from scratch for.
...Chibi Robo...wasn't even popular to begin with to warrant creating a new fighter from scratch for.
@jump That cuts deep man. I love chibi robo, you didnt have to tell it like it is. Doesn't Chibi have it haed enough being such a small robot, while also being such a massive failure? If he was in Smash he'd probably explode the moment anyone made contact with him.

For the sake of it: The first Chibi game is an underrated classic imo. Other than that it's up in the air. The next best game never had an (official) English release, the only other good one to me is the 3DS one that no one likes lol (Zip Lash, I guess there are two that nobody likes). It may be dull, but you could do a lot worse for 2D platformers on the 3DS

@Losermagnet I probably would buy the first one if it was remastered or they did a virtual console release. Even if Zip Lash was just so-so it came out at a time when Ninty were releasing an abundance of good 2D platformers, it needed to be special to make it stand out.
I totally agree that Joker's inclusion in Smash was interpreted as an advertisement for a Persona 5 Switch port. Perhaps if they'd of selected a character more emblematic of SMT as a whole, rather than the offshoot series, we would've avoided that. I'm not suggesting that there was a better candidate, just that it would've advertised SMT rather than just Persona.
Edit: to add to that, the Persona games on Nintendo systems are spinoffs of a spinoff, so I think that adds to the frustration.
@Losermagnet Honestly considering Atlus' tendency to stick Persona 5 into virtually anything that was mainstream to get the awareness towards the game to grow, this could've easily been interpreted as just Atlus using Smash as another avenue to advertise Persona 5 rather than specifically Persona 5 on a Nintendo console
It's easy to read into that specific inclusion and extrapolate that it could've meant P5 was possible on Switch, but it's basically like any other time Atlus have used another game that wasn't theirs to advertise Persona 5. It wasn't even the first time they put Persona 5 stuff or even Persona stuff in general into other games that happened to be on Switch
@TheFrenchiestFry Honestly, I can see them using that tactic, and it seems to have worked, since I grew more interested in Persona when Joker got into smash a while back, which led me to checking out Persona 4 and eventually Persona 5 earlier this year.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@VoidofLight Oh yeah the tactic has definitely worked
I know a friend who was already semi-aware of Persona before Smash but his interest in it didn't increase until after Joker got into Smash. He first got into the series when P4G released on Steam and then it encouraged him to bring his dead Vita back to life to buy the other entries and he's playing Persona 1 right now
Smash definitely did a lot in helping the series' popularity increase
It wasn't even the first time they put Persona 5 stuff or even Persona stuff in general into other games that happened to be on Switch
Really? What came before Smash?
From Atlus' perpective it was a win-win regardless to have Joker in Smash. It elevated the status of their most popular property. But I can't blame people for expecting P5 on Switch. Joker was the first DLC fighter revealed, and it was at the Game Awards. I'm sure nobody saw that and thought "Oh wow, I loved him in Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth. I can't wait to replay that on my 3DS". They got hyped cause they thought it might mean P5 proper on the Switch. I guess, in that way, Joker was probably more disappointing for hardcore Nintendo folks.

@Losermagnet There were some Persona-themed things that happened before Smash
BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle was a crossover between multiple ArcSys, game and anime IPs and one of the repped franchises was Persona 4 Arena
Sonic Forces had the Joker outfit for the custom Avatar character
There was a Persona 5 event in Phantasy Star Online 2 which also had at the time, recently came out on Switch via cloud streaming in Japan
Those were basically the things that happened pre-Smash and then obviously stuff like Joker in Catherine Full Body, Strikers and the Joker costume in Tokyo Mirage Sessions Encore were a thing as well among other things. I can't blame people for feeling teased by all this stuff without even as much as a prospect of Persona 5 or any main entry coming to Switch, but Atlus has been pushing the game out there like this for way longer than people realize and it's purely worked out for them from a business perspective.
I will say though Joker being in Smash was what got me to buy the Fighters Pass for Ultimate. That was probably the most pure sense of hype I felt since Cloud got announced for Smash Wii U
It's a bit silly for people to get worked up about Joker anyway. It may not make much sense from a "Nintendo-rep" perspective, but he was a huge get and at the right time too.
