Well... At least Gorons have been shown to be perfectly capable of surviving underwater. They don't seem to need oxygen at all.
Of course, the tricky part is getting out of water. A Goron stuck underwater would probably be more than happy to start a symbiotic relationship with a coral.
Moreover, when was the last time there wasn't a fire dungeon? Zelda 1? It's kind of a lock.
Actually, depending on your interpretation, you could say there was a fire dungeon in zelda 1. Basically, there is a dungeon in that game where all impassible tiles are a solid red, which I would interpret as lava.
Basically, I was bored, so I looked back, and the last zelda games not to have a fire-themed dungeon were the Oracle games. They had a bunch of oddly themed dungeons, from "Crown Dungeon" to "Dancing Dragon Dungeon." But every game since Wind Waker has had a Fire/Flame/Mountain theme. That's a solid 10 games.
Intrestingly enough, most Zelda games before Wind Waker except for Ocarina of Time don't have an obvious fire dungeon.
Zelda II didn't. Majora's Mask didn't, though Snowhead did have lava in the lowest level. Link's Awakening and A Link to the Past's respective Turtle Rock dungeons each had slight firey overtones, but they aren't immediately obvious.
At any rate, that was a fun little bedtime research project. Good night, everyone!
@Nicolai Never apologize for googling. Didn't Zelda II have Death Mountain? That's at least mountain if not fire, right?
Anyway, you're right about Majora's Mask. I gloss over it in my mind because it still had the Gorons, but it was a nice, largely fire-devoid twist on the mountain archetype.
But with all that lava streaming down and smoke billowing up from it, I think Death Mountain is a lock for a fire something. Hylians too hooked on those "lit" temples.
(Pause those videos at the start) Interestingly enough, Breath of the Wild's Death Mountain has looked different every time we've seen it. The ash cloud even has two different appearances in the E3 build: From afar the plume is uplit red and close by it shows up as two distinct, black spouts.
It's pretty neat to see that the general lay-out hasn't changed a bit since the original trailer. Even the concept art of Link climbing matches up with all the landmarks.
Anyway, I've come to a realization about Breath of the Wild: I'm going to kill a Zora. I don't mean those ugly fish-headed Not Canon ones. No, I mean humanoid, friendly Zora NPCs who are fully killable. And with all of that fire around, it's going to be a very bad game for the Zoras.
We're going to the take those conventions, and break them right over their Zora heads.
Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons both have at least one dungeon filled with lava inside an active volcano each.
I guess I would have to sit through a let's play to know for sure (doesn't sound too appealing right now). I guess that was only based on my quick look of the dungeon names, since I don't remember them all that well.
Anyway, my favorite Death Mountain sillouette by far is the November Direct one, where the lave spilling down the sides lights it up from far away. I suppose if Death Mountain is as active as they say (i.e. errupting every few seconds), it makes sense that it would look different every now and then.
Fun fact: I originally had assumed that Death Mountain's tendency to erupt every few seconds , but my google-happy fingers just discovered that some real volcanoes actually stay constantly active! However, usually when they do, they're just spilling from the top and not ejecting rocks everywhere, but hey, this is a fantasy game, isn't it?
My unrealistic hope for BotW is that fishing returns and the fishing gameplay takes inspiration from the best fishing simulator in existence, Sonic Adventure.
