I have been on pitch dark woods at night (it was a firefly tour... But the fireflies weren't so into it) and I'd rather have whimsical glowing forest orbs and cute bioluminescent mushrooms to guide my way.
That feeling of seeing someone walking next to you when there's no one there because darkness and trees mess with your peripheral vision is not nice.
Dude... you just described my dream game. Elder Scrolls 6 VR: the closetest of closet horror games. People walking up behind you in Skyrim is NOT OKAY, and that's just on a normal TV.
First things first, Breath is nothing like Assassin's Creed. The climbing and combat are totes diffs, kay?
But to your main point; Nintendo has been making roughly the same kind of Zelda game since 1998, by "Nintendo" I mean EAD 3 which contains real people, the production speed and (I'd argue) quality of those games severely dropped off after Twilight Princess—2006—and lastly, this isn't the last Zelda game. It's time for them to try something new. If not for the series, then for the team's sanity (although, to be fair, an open world game probably isn't helping with that). Besides, just like after the Wind Waker shook things up, they'll go back and make different types of Zelda games. Only this time it'll take 6 years :/
@Meowpheel I think that would be pretty cool; a large forest that sort of moves the trees around to add to your confusion. You're lost, nighttime falls, it becomes almost impossible to see more than three feet past the safe space that is created by your torch; and all the koroksmonsters start to come out.

This sounds like Lost Woods on steroids. I like it

that actually isn't my point at all. My point is that, in a sane world, Zelda-like games would be common enough that there would be no reason to even worry, since even if this open world thing doesn't fully work (or work in such a way to live up to what people like about Zelda), someone else would be making 3D Zelda-like games anyway so you would get your fill of that regardless! In fact, it's funny in retrospect that Beyond Good and Evil came out the exact same year as Wind Waker. Because if you wanted your 3D Zelda experience with a vehicle on water to not involve long trips to go from place to place the way Wind Waker did, you had Beyond Good and Evil. Not that Wind Waker didn't have its advantages over that game, but that's besides the point.
This might be why Zelda has gone all over the place the past 5 or so years. There are many different types of fans of this genre to appeal to, and Nintendo is trying to appeal to all of them since no else is gonna. Someone made a great point once that New Super Mario Bros was originally a great game and felt so much fresher largely because 2D platformers weren't that popular in 2006 but a few years later when indie games and Little Big Planet and Rayman Origins (and other big Nintendo titles for that matter) were all out, NSMB2 and U seemed so much worse by comparison. People liked New Super Mario Bros partially because it was so different and filled something in gaming that people wanted but others did not provide. I'm not saying Zelda has been bad lately, but I am saying it wouldn't matter much if it was worse than it is because if you want a game that plays like Zelda, your options are so limited you'll happily take what you can get. This is also one of the reasons I defend Star Fox Zero despite its issues quite frankly. Not gonna find another 3d shoot em up like this anytime soon meethinks...
It's more and more apparent to me that while they obviously share a ton of fans, there's a huge difference in what fans of Skyward Sword and fans of A Link Between Worlds wanted. Comparing this to a popular genre like FPS is so weird. Like if you want an FPS that isn't Call of Duty, you certainly have your options and then some. But in this case, you probably just need to hope the next Zelda game actually appeals to you. Right now this feels borderline like a one IP genre. This one IP is the entire genre now.
Basically, someone should be smart and release a 3D Zelda like game (or even 2D for that matter) that isn't this type of open world, and it will be loved by people in the same way people who were disappointed by Skyward Sword seem to frequently really like ALBW (and I will love both of them presumably). Instead if you are disappointed by Breath of the Wild when it comes out, you are entirely out of luck.
Nintendoes what THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY DOESN'T EVEN TRY is the tl;dr version
Darksiders is one of the few 3rd party retail games still coming to Wii U.
Megaman Legends 3 had a chance to be revived on 3DS.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 might be funded by Nintendo
Okami sold best on Wii and Okamiden (a sequel I doubt anyone predicted would happen between Okami's initial sales and Clover Studios being gone) was on DS
@kkslider5552000 I'm currently playing Hyper Light Drifter, and that is one of the closest games to a 2D Zelda game I've played in a while, yet it is different at the same time. There are definitely some 2D action-adventure games that resemble the 2D Zelda games, but the 3D games? Yeah, there's barely anything at all. There are 3D action games, but the adventure part is usually missing, or it doesn't have collectable items and weapons. There's nothing that I can think of that is truely an alternative to Zelda. Even a game like ÅŒkami, while similar, is still a completely different game.

Except Ubisoft Montpellier and Clover Studios did try, as you've noted. Because of them the mid-2000s Zelda releases essentially got a double up; 2003 with The Wind Waker and Beyond Good & Evil, then 2006 with Okami and Twilight Princess. Edit: And Darksiders too. I always forget that one.

I get what you're saying, though—that going open world will change Breath's method of progression and therefore genre (finally turning into an actual "action/adventure"). Thankfully much of the gameplay is similar to past titles, so I don't think this will change the appeal much.
