So... I've seen a lot of complaints (online) about how Zelda is portrayed in this game: she's too posh, whiny, monotone, etc. I've actually got more of an issue with how Link is portrayed. In previous Zeldas he's usually a local village boy finding his feet, gradually turning into a hero; the majority of NPCs typically scoff at him for being a kid, etc. In BotW, he's this legendary hero and most of the NPCs fall at his feet despite him looking like a scrawny teen. Especially the women (and seriously, what's up with that? Most of the women seem to be nervous around men (Link in particular), fawning over them, or searching for one).
It doesn't seem to work (for me at least) - Link doesn't fit the strapping-warrior archetype so to have him being admired so much is a little jarring. I prefer Link to be earning the plaudits or seen as this surprise hero, as with most other Zelda games, not have him be this well-known bad*ss from the off (while looking the opposite).
@Monkey_Balls Ya, the Dark Link set is the last of his items, if you see that, there is nothing else....which is sad because I find his shop pretty dope.
Yeah I've got that. I was hoping for more of those masks (especially a Hinox version). Oh well, at least I can stop wasting time going to his shop.
@Nicolaison@Meowpheel I love how that turned into a convo on how to best describe what happens with the divine beasts. I needed that little detour today.

Completed my second divine beast. [...] However, my previous excursion into Hyrule Castle made Windblight really, really easy.
@Ryu_Niiyama I was wondering about this... Do you mean that Windblight was easier because you had previous experience of fighting it? Or does defeating it in Hyrule Castle somehow change its presence in the Divine Beast?
@Monkey_Balls TLDR AT THE BOTTOM, placing in spoiler so nobody has to read a wall of text if they don't want to.
I like Zelda's character personally, I think the narrative does a good job dealing with the Eastern view of fate...which is something that isn't subverted. The three of them are trapped in this eternal cycle (...why Hylia CHOSE this for herself is beyond me...I don't count the manga as canon and it isn't like Link and Zelda pair up each lifetime) and while Ganon and Link mostly seem to just go with their fate in general (Link has his moments but it seems to me that he focuses on his immediate goal and then once it spirals into save the world territory he is of the mentality "Well I've come this far so...") while Zelda suffers in some fashion for it. Her family is usually murdered and based on BotW she and her predecessors live their lives training to be Hylia's vessels only for each to shackle her own daughter with the same if Ganon doesn't show up in her lifetime. That is a horrible burden and one that means that in many ways your own talents and identity gets swallowed by a decision made by your past incarnation that you have no input on now. I adored that they touched on that somewhat in this game. Obviously Zelda didn't try to run away but she realized that as of the past that BotW references wasting time praying for Hylia to awaken in her wasn't as useful as putting her own wisdom to work with trying to make the ancient tech work. Yet everyone around her (except Urbosa it seems) is pretty much telling her your current attempts are useless, stop playing around and become the goddess/sage already. I did think it was cool that Link himself showed that he stifled himself to become the Hero of Courage everyone is expecting him to be. Nice way to hand wave his lack of speaking as well. As I've stated previously in this thread I don't like the voice acting but it is what it is at this point. I'm fighting a losing battle.
I get some of the reaction to Link as failure that he is, he is still a living legend. Unlike the other games where he just happens to be the nobody that solves a few temples because no one knows his tie to the Trinity ....(second Trinity? I mean the Golden Goddesses and Hylia form the Triforce with Hylia as the empty space in the middle but the current reincarnated trio each have an aspect of the Golden Goddesses with seemingly Link and Zelda being tied to Hylia whom in my opinion is the Goddess of Time--- as she staged for them both to be eternally reborn and created a living sword that lasts into eternity for Her champion...yep Goddess of Time but I digress) Yet in BotW the temples were made for Link. To prepare him no matter what happens since they were made 10,000 years ago. That tie to the land and history of Hyrule commands a bit of awe...plus he is the last member of the Hyrule Sentai...I mean Champions of Hyrule. They might have lost but they were still the sources of hope for each of their peoples. As far as Link's physique he seems to be a standard young healthy Hylian male and I don't remember ever seeing any art or characters where other male Hylians are some muscle bulging guys. You get some stocky types like the carpenters, but they don't look like warriors either. Plus the Hylians/Shiekah aren't the most robust of races unlike say the Gerudo or the Gorons. Now if he had reincarnated normally and would likely be 10 then yeah I could see how people fawning over him would be very, very weird. Paya's reaction isn't so bad if you think that she likely heard tales of Link from her grandmother, and if Impa's position is hereditary she was groomed to assist him and since it doesn't seem like she inherited Impa's badarse gene (based upon her commentary) and she is stuck in a podunk town with a race of people that are in service to Hylia, The Royal Family and the Hero (seemingly in that order) I'm sure she fluffed him up in her mind a bit and now she is his teen heart throb or some such. Also attraction makes some women blush and stammer (raises hand) I'm 31 and I still turn into a blushing idiot around a woman I'm attracted to. (Thank Hylia I'm funny) So that isn't too hard to understand. That is even before you get to the Japanese Yamato Nadeshiko stereotype.
As for the Gerudo I'm beyond disturbed about the obsession with finding a husband, given that since their inception the Gerudo have been shown to be an independent (save one lone dude every generation) resourceful tribe of artisans, engineers, warriors and merchants. Being thirsty for a guy doesn't get that sort of civilization built. I understand continuing on the species and all that but hearing the kids talk about it just made me really sad. Little girls want to be more than a wife when they grow up (I know that wasn't my main interest at all--and I didn't find out half the world has an issue with a girl wanting to be a wife to another girl until I hit my early teens.) Also it feels like Paradise Lost to me, but that is because the idea of living in a culture that is female centric shouldn't be so obsessed with guys beyond breeding. However I'm also a homosexual (lesbian keeps getting co-opted by non lesbians so I don't use it in text so I'm not mistaken for a tumblr idiot) and I don't understand heterosexual attraction anyway, so I chalk my reaction up to that and leave it alone. But yeah the thirst going on in this game has been very disturbing for me. I am surprised someone else here felt similar, even if not for the same reasons.
TLDR: Zelda is pretty cool actually and has a realistic reaction to a crapsack fate she can't escape, I still hate voice acting, Link is a living legend so it makes some sense the reactions to him by those in the know, Paya is a Yamato Nadeshiko and I agree that the Gerudo are inexplicably too thirsty. I also talk too much this close to quitting time.

@Monkey_Balls Previous experience and I'd looted Hyrule Castle so I have overpowered weapons. I'm thinking about getting another set of the Soldier Armor and keeping it at low level so the game is harder again. Breezing through Silver Lynels now. I only have 48 shrines...so I have a lot of game to play and I don't want the combat to lose its bite.

Ya, I hope the cave will be neat and a little more extensive then what TP had to offer, I would really like to be able to fight a endless horde until you die, use what is dropped or found, and have select locations or something because fighting in the same area over time can get dull, as for the challenges and new map area thingy, going to assume it's side quests and god knows what else, but either way, hopefully soon in a direct or E3, we will get some BOTW news.
I just realized how genius it is that the Coliseum Ruins' entrance faces away from the Great Plateau. So when you first jump off the Great Plateau, it's not inviting you, and it's obvious that it's not supposed to be the first area you go to, but it's there if you really want to know what it feels like to face the hardest enemies right away.
@Nicolaison That is kinda neat, but I honestly didn't even find it until much later. I feel like the game pushes you pretty clearly to the Dueling Peaks and Zora's Domain based on the hints you get before leaving. The design to that set up was pretty interesting though because it never felt linear, even though the surrounding area more or less forces you to go that route based on how difficult most of the other areas are initially.
To add to that, every story moment feels almost serendipitous, and never like you had to go anywhere. Heck, your first meeting with the Zora prince almost feels accidental.
@TNGYM Lynels remind me more of Rajangs, personally. Maybe it's the shape of their horns, the way they both look when they charge straight at you, their mouth weapons, resistances to elemental damage, swinging combos, descriptions of their throbbing inner organs (and descriptions in general, "creature that is rarely sighted and seldom survived")... heck, the one "mandatory" Lynel encounter in Zora's Domain is even known for using shock attacks. Main difference is that Lynels trade some of the speed for durability (relatively speaking).
Part of me wishes they'd actually use their shields as, well... shields, instead of just an awkward extra sword.
LMAO!!!
The Rajang was actually the other monster i was actually debating about comparing! They are both pretty feirce, and use lightning! And those horns definately bear a resemblance.
Although i think the Rajang is more challenging.... I think in the end it was the air of personality they exude that affected my choice. The zinogre is proud and dignified which Is a feeling i get from the Lynels... When a Zinogre nails me, I dont even get mad, im like "Your blow struck true proud warrior! Come let us wage mighty war, let us carve the proof of our existence upon the world with the awesome might of our fevered pitch! Recieve the truth of my axe, and rejoice, for all who will look upon the land of our battle will know we fought, and therefore we were!"
And with the Rajang its more like "Oh you damn dirty cheapo monkey. You secondvrate Goku you- Oh, you think thats funny? Oh im a funny guy? THATS IT! Youre goin down!"
I'd say they're like Teostra. Especially the way they move and charge at you, the way they spray that swirling wind around them and then ignite it into a huge combustible AoE attack that very closely resembles Teostra's explosions. Also the horns and mane. If lynels had wings, they'd be Teostra through and through

I just saw on the Amiibo section of Nintendo's website that almost every Amiibo is compatible with BOTW now. Anyone know what the non-Zelda ones do? I guess I can try when I play tonight. Although I just picked up Xenoblade X, Kirby Rainbow, and Chibi Robo with Amiibo for $10 or less each. Might have to try them out too.
Ya, all it is is random food like raw meat, mushrooms, and flowers, nothing too special, if you need a list of what the amiibo does, check this out http://imgur.com/a/QWNvr
