Supposedly the Japanese video description says no unannounced fighter will be showcased in the video.

How on earth are they gonna spend 45 minutes on just Terry and a batch of Mii costumes?

Like even Ryu's command inputs and Hero's spells didn't take all that long to go over.

@DarthNocturnal Sakurai's about to spend 20 minutes going over the history of SNK and KoF/Fatal Fury, isn't he?

No announcements regarding unrevealed fighters is officially confirmed. Suggests 6.0 may be larger than the previous ones, what comes to mind are stages and modes. Maybe the missing retro stages like Melee's Mute City return?

Well, as long as the content announced is good then it should be fine.

Also, we can safely confirm that the 5th character is being saved for The Game Awards.

@Grumblevolcano They already said Home Run Contest was the last new mode being added back in the Banjo showcase.

This is just speculation but perhaps we could see new Echo Fighters as DLC. That way they can please some of the fanbase while we wait for the The Game Awards to reveal the 5th character.

For Echoes I could see:

1. Dixie Kong (Diddy's echo)
2. Funky Kong (DK's echo)
3. Ninten (Ness's echo)
4. Black Shadow (C. Falcon's echo) (sorry if that's not his true name)
5. Cranky Kong as a semi-echo of Diddy.

The reason why I put mostly DK characters is because this month Donkey Kong Country's 25 anniversary and I think Nintendo would like to have at least something for Donkey Kong, since Retro Studios is busy with Metroid Prime 4 and this franchise sells well enough to warrant some mention in his 25th anniversary.

That's one of the few ways I see the presentation last 45 minutes. There could be other ways though, but I'm at a loss as to how else it will last this long if there won't be a new character or a new mode.

Even with Mii costumes and new and returning DLC Stages, I can't see that taking too long. Something has to fill that time and the most reasonable way seems to be with DLC Echoes.

@Diddy64 I don't think they'd release any echoes as paid DLC based on Sakurai's words. Either we'd see
1. An echo for a new character released in the same pack, at the same price as a normal character. (Jill and Leon or Roxas and Sora for example)
or
2. An echo released as free DLC as "thanks to all the fans for supporting" or something.

Also, yes, his name is Black Shadow. He'd actually probably have made a better echo of Smash 4 Ganondorf than Captain Falcon, but alas that is not an option. Dixie seems the most likely if we get anyone first party though, she's one of the biggest Nintendo characters missing from an existing series.

Diddy64

@link3710 That would be even better. Thanks for confirming me of Black Shadow's name. It has been a while since I last saw his name that I thought that I spell it wrong. Now that you mention him as an echo of Smash 4 Ganon, it would certainly fit better as that.

I do agree that Dixie would be the most likely if we get free DLC. I would be more than happy with just her. Although I will also be ok if Sakurai announce other surprise/update.

I might have posted this before, but I think the route I would go would be:

Additional New Fighter Pass at $25 (my five personal choices were Doom Slayer, Rex & Pyra, Geno, Rayman and Waluigi) (depending on who the fifth character is in the first pass, replace Geno with Crash or Spyro)
Echo Fighter Pass at $15 (Dixie Kong, Black Shadow, Medusa, Impa and Shadow)

Those obviously include Waluigi and Shadow being promoted from Assist Trophies to fighters.

Maybe as part of a free update, add a couple of new Pokemon from Sword/Shield and new assist trophies (Guardians from BOTW, Shantae, the Rabbids if Rayman makes the cut, or bring back some previous ones that were cut).

And the final free update I would love to see would be an All Star Boss Rush, with all of the bosses in the series from Master Hand to Porky to Rayquaza to Master Core to Darkhon.

In addition to the news the Smash stream gave, Richter and Dark Samus amiibo launches 17th January 2020 (same day as TMS).

@DarkSim01 I highly doubt we'll get any new 3rd party companies in the second pass, given the business circumstances around it. I'd wager we'll get stuff like Bandana Dee, an SS Pokemon, another Mario character that's not Waluigi (King Boo, Pauline) or a BotW based Zelda character, Dixie or Cranky Kong, and Rex & Pyra/Mythra or an ARMS rep.

@link3710 Understand the complexity. But I think that Smash Bros becoming the highest selling fighting game of all time will get some attention from developers and some of them will want to see their characters get more attention.

Doomslayer would be used to help boost the sales of Doom Eternal when it releases, pending release date and time of announcement for Smash
Geno is already a shared property, a fan favorite and a personal favorite of Sakurai.
Rayman already has a presence in the game as a spirit, so I highly doubt Ubisoft would put up much of a fight of his addition.
Same argument goes for Shadow, given he's an assist trophy would could easily make the transition to echo fighter with minimal work.

Crash and Spyro, being Activision properties, having no presence in the game yet and not having an upcoming release to serve as a promotion for would be much more of an uphill battle.

@DarkSim01 I mean, agreed for Doomslayer. Out of all 3rd party candidates, he seems incredibly likely. Anything involving Square Enix is rough territory though, making me worry about Geno. Rayman is... I have no idea. He's cameoed in two Smash games in a row, so clearly Sakurai is aware of his popularity. The main question is if he's been unable to get him as a character or hasn't tried. Shadow is certainly possible if we get echoes (alongside Jeanne and Protoman, with Big Boss and Ms. Pac-Man as possible but less likely). I still think we'll see mostly 1st party though.

iKhan

Yeah no, Doomslayer is pretty unlikely IMO. Notice how all the 3rd party characters have been from Japanese companies up until now? It also seems that Nintendo is pretty detached from the PC gaming world, so thats another point against Doom.

I'd say the most likely 3rd party character is easily Monster Hunter given the existence of Rathalos in the game.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

@iKhan Banjo says hi. Also I'd say that's actually a major point in favor of Doom Slayer. Smash has become a celebration of gaming history as a whole. Adding in Doom Slayer kills two birds with one stone by paying homage to both the FPS genre and PC gaming as a whole, both of which haven't been covered yet.

@iKhan Doom may have PC roots, but name a major PC based series with stronger Nintendo ties. It's even had the Nintendo exclusive Doom 64, not to mention every major game in the series is now on Switch, and most were on Nintendo consoles in the past save 3. If any series would break that barrier, Doom's probably top of the list.

link3710

DarkSim01

Agreed with @link3710 on Doomslayer. Doom has eclipsed being just a "PC game." Bethesda is one of most highly regarded publishers out there right now, pushing nothing but quality titles and iD Software has some iconic franchises under their belt as well. Doomslayer is THE FPS icon, even above Master Chief (in my opinion at least) and SSBU is an homage to all of gaming. If anyone deserves to be there, especially from a genre that hasn't been represented yet, it's him. And Nintendo has a great relationship, as mentioned above, with Doom 64 and the recent release of all of the classic titles, Doom 2016 on Switch and the upcoming Doom Eternal.

@link3710 As for your idea on the echo fighters... I'm not a fan of Jeanne, simply because she is already represented in a costume of Bayonetta. Proto Man I could see, but given that they just recently released a new Mii Costume of him, I doubt he'd get the push. (Geno on the other hand is just a rehash of an older Mii Costume, so it's a little different in my opinion.) And for people like Ms. Pac Man, I'd prefer a free update of alternate skins for some fighters who would be EXACT copies, like Alph for Olimar, the female Villager, the Koopalings, etc. Ms. Pac Man would be perfect for that. Just slap a bow on Pac Man, 4 different colors, record the announcer saying "Ms." and you're set.

DarkSim01

DarkSim01

Add to the alternate list:
Ms. Pac Man
Ninten
Dry Bowser
(Mega Man) X
Octoling
