@StephanDLW Interesting is what I was going for, so thanks! While I agree that a ton of fans would be upset by some removals (I even removed some of my favorites, Villager, Chrom, Dark Samus, Young Link, Snake), I doubt it would really hurt sales. This game is so popular, the vast majority of fans would still buy it.

I really think Ultimate is basically going to be the culmination of Smash up to this point, the Sakurai era, and we will have one of two things in the future: constant updates to Ultimate, making it the last Smash game ever or a "reboot" of sorts like I mentioned above, with a new creative director at the helm. If we get the latter option, I think you'll see a lot of the "excess" characters removed and a new generation of characters join.

Sakurai's love for Smash brought him to work on it for the last 8 years. And he announced that Ultimate will continue to grow bigger after the Fighters Pass.

This game is exceptionally big already. With a game of this caliber I can see it being ported over to the next gen, only having more fighters, modes, stages, instead of having a new director doing things from scratch and very differently.

One one hand people are satisfied with Smash Ultimate, on the other hand they want more from it.

At least 1 Tetris block is coming to Smash as a spirit.

I'm gonna organize some frequently mentioned (and some personally wanted) newcomers into likelihood tiers for the final character of the challenger pack (only characters meeting Sakurai's established rules)

A tier (No surprise whatsoever if these characters make it in)
Rayman
Crash Bandicoot
Steve (Minecraft)
Dante
Monster Hunter
Ryu Hayabusa
Heihachi (Tekken)

B tier
Lloyd Irving (Tales of)
Nightmare (Soulcalibur)
Kasumi (Dead or Alive)

C tier
Sora
Quote (Cave Story)

D tier (I'd be as shocked as I was with Cloud and Banjo in smash)
Doomguy (There is a very obvious bias towards Japanese third party characters and console third party characters. As much as I agree he's an important character in gaming history, Nintendo doesn't really seem to be trying to honor PC gaming)
Geralt
Ezio
Klonoa

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

@iKhan I've changed my mind on the chance of Doomguy in Smash, my logic before was Doomguy in Smash being the reason the Switch version of DOOM Eternal was going to be released the same day as the other platforms though that is no longer the case (we have a Dark Souls Remastered situation where Switch version comes later).

@DarthNocturnal Not what I was getting at. Rather a deal between Nintendo and Bethesda guaranteeing DOOM Eternal launches on Switch the same day as the other platforms in return for Doomguy in Smash of which it's no longer launching same day so there's no such deal.

I'll throw some more at that list. Spyro is probably a B, though personally I'd want him over Crash. Capcom's got another Bs as well, with any of the RE characters possible (though it'd probably be Jill or Leon, and I'm leaning towards Jill as most likely). Ammy's probably a C, but not completely out of the running. I'd place Tracer as an A honestly, she might be more likely than Crash for an A-B rep, though she wouldn't be in the running until Season 2. And if we get another unapologetically Japanese pick like Terry next season, I'd say it's Jibanyan, placing him around a B.

That deal doesn't really make sense honestly... sounds like a good way for both parties to shoot themselves in the foot, if it all comes down to a simultaneous release. Especially with the time involved with developing a character, and how delay-prone game development can be.

I would think fighter inclusion would be absolute once the deal is inked, bar maybe major controversy (see; any Blizzard character).

Blizzard: You said we had a deal!

Nintendo: I am altering the deal. Pray I do not alter it any further

According to Marlongaming, Terry will come in November 5. Don't know if it's true though.

@DarthNocturnal Honestly, the news that Overwatch 2 is coming to Switch too makes me wonder if there really was a deal with Tracer getting in as the final member of the original batch. If so, way too late for Nintendo to back out now.

I'm thinking if we see another DLC character announced before the end of this year, it'll be at the Game Awards just like Joker last year.

Legal threats that have gone nowhere: 1

Diddy64

@Toy_Link Now that you said it, I think that's the most likely case. The only way for that to be different, is if Nintendo has something else like a video of Zelda BotW 2 or one of those unexpected reveals that they come up from nowhere.

@Diddy64 Even if they did, don't forget TGA 2017 saw Champion's Pack, Bayonetta 1+2, and Bayonetta 3 announcements. Obviously that was as packed as it was to help get the Switch major attention in it's first year, but point is that multiple reveals are an option, so even that won't likely stop having a Smash character announced.

@link3710 True. I had forgotten about TGA 2017. I'll be sure to keep in mind that possibility.

Terry could actually give us an insight to whether the next Direct is this year or next year. Piranha Plant's moveset was shown in the November 2018 Smash Direct so didn't need a video of its own, meanwhile the next 2 characters (Joker and DQ Hero) were nowhere near general Directs when their video was released:

February Direct - 13th February
Joker - 16th April
E3 - 11th June
DQ Hero - 30th July
September Direct - 4th September
Banjo - 4th September

So if Terry does come on his own like Joker and DQ Hero, it seems very likely that the next Direct is in January/February with character 5 revealed at The Game Awards. Meanwhile if Terry's video is at the end of a Direct like Banjo, it's likely that the Direct would reveal character 5 and the release date for Terry rather than a separate release date announcement.

All right! I'm looking forward to it!

@Grumblevolcano Considering it's 45 minutes long I think we're going to see the 5th fighter revealed and probably distribution details for the future DLC (ie confirmation of Fighters Pass 2).

As for who I think the 5th fighter is.... It's time to rip and tear!!!

Diddy64

@Grumblevolcano With it being this long (45 min.), it's not far fetched to think they will have character 5 announced, right?

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

Grumblevolcano

@IceClimbers @Diddy64 Yeah some combination of significant new mode, fighter 5 and/or DLC details for after the Fighters Pass seems a reasonable guess.
