@DarkSim01 I'd say keep Olimar and the Villager, just to have at least one character represent their franchise. They can definitely ditch a bunch of Fire Emblem characters and add new ones from the new game. Falco is pointless after years without a good Star Fox game, we still have Fox after all. Wii Fit Trainer can go, that era has passed. Switch out some of the Pokemon characters, same for Shulk. Replace him with Rex, or whatever he's called. Sheik and booty Samus can go as well, we still have Zelda and regular ol' Samus. But yeah, I generally agree, you can get rid of a lot of characters, because a lot are only kept in the games for the sake of keeping them in.
And I'd like to see some characters that were recently introduced, like the Inklings (confirmed obv)., but also an ARMS characters for example. Snipperclips? If they can make it work, go for it. Maybe Captain Toad as well? He has his own game on Wii U, 3DS and Switch, so why not?
I like Villager, just because it's funny to beat my brother with him and make him angry. But I could easily see him and Olimar be moved to the assist trophy appearance. I could also see Captain Toad and Snipperclips as assist trophies as well. They deserve an appearance, but not as a playable fighter.
@Meowpheel Jigglypuff's air speed was buffed from 64 to Melee, but it was really the engine that made her good in that game, Rest only being part of it. Much easier to edgeguard with unforgiving ledge mechanics and restricted air dodges, along with the mostly mediocre recoveries of the top tiers. Since then she hasn't really gotten real nerfs outside of Rest, it's the physics of later games that make her flaws more apparent.
Two funny trends I've noticed in terms buffs/nerfs: Falcon Punch gets worse every game, while Luigi's dash attack gets better every time.
And on the topic of Mario characters; if one wanted to represent Odyssey outside of a stage, why not give Mario a similar plethora of costumes? It's a more feasible option than Cappy, if you ask me.
@DarthNocturnal Rosalina is a great character for representing the Galaxy part of Mario, she even had her own theme to hammer it in.
@DarthNocturnal But I really like the flame motif he's been given over the course of Smash, it makes him feel more distinct from his own games along with the attitude to match. And the Cape is the only move that has the real turnaround effect in the game; other customs in Smash 4 were pale imitations at best.
...You know, we probably wouldn't have to have this debate on moves if customs were more fleshed out/better implemented.
@AlternateButtons Both Megaman and Street Fighter are getting game compilations on the Switch, to say nothing of Megaman 11. I wonder if Capcom will try to capitalize on the surge of popularity a certain franchise has gotten lately?
Ultimately I feel like people go too overboard with third-party suggestions. None really seem all that cool to get. I mean, some suggest Undertale and Cave Story characters and while I like/love those two games respectively, I don't think they're Smash worthy. Others suggest like Geralt from The Witcher which really makes me raise an eyebrow. I could be wrong though and Sakurai could see them as Smash worthy, but that's my feelings on the matter.
Probably the only third-party characters in the past that came close to "not being Smash worthy" I guess is Bayonetta and Snake, but with the whole recent Nintendo exclusivity with Bayonetta 2 (and 3) she still fits fine enough. Snake clashed hard with everyone else, but he was also among the most prolific games in the early games and appeared on Nintendo consoles already with NES Metal Gear, Ghost Babel on GBC, and Twin Snakes on GCN.
So for new characters, I'll be conservative and not expect much third-party characters. First-party, on the other hand:
I think we'll get another Xenoblade representation. It'll either be Rex + Pyra/Mythra, or it'll be Pyra/Mythra on her own as that expectation-defying character like Robin was to Chrom. If we're lucky, we'll get a second one but I don't see that as likely. Sakurai really liked Xenoblade 2 when he played it, so I'm gonna cross my fingers that the series gets the representation it deserves (though not to the extent of Fire Emblem, that was a mistake and it shouldn't happen to Xenoblade too)
ARMS might get a representation too. Whoever they choose is anyone's guess, but I'm guessing Spring Man with a Ribbon Girl skin available.
Splatoon was already confirmed
We'll most likely get a Generation 7 Pokemon too. Idk who though, there's 50 of them to choose. Generation 8 is very, very unlikely.
We might see the Fire Emblem 16 Lord be playable like how Roy was playable in Melee before their games were released (I think? I heard about that somewhere). That said, I don't see this as likely.
New third-party characters are such a wildcard you just can't predict anyone. You may get the "safe" ones like Sonic and Mega Man, but you also get the wacky ones like Snake or Cloud. So I'll just wait for the reveals.
Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill
I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!
Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.
This doesn’t really have anything to do with this game,as the Switch now supports it, but in the future in the GameCube controller will have to die. That controller has been actively used for Smash for over a decade, and I kind of want it to die. I NEVER liked it, as it just never felt quite right. I’ll use it for Melee, as that’s the only option, but for Brawl, I use Wii-chuck combo and for Smash 4, I never had a Wii U so even if I was playing with someone who did I just used my 3DS. It’s a weird opinion, but hey, what can I do?
@TheTetrisGuy As long as Smash games are released, the GameCube controller will never die. Nintendo will always find some way to support it so the fanbase is happy because they know the backlash would be Federation Force levels otherwise.
I think we have enough Pokemon. There's just too many, and think how relevant Greninja is now compared to 2014. Not very. 8th gen will end up the same way.
Characters from Switch exclusive third-party titles - like the Rabbids/Snipperclips, for example - are probably the most likely to appear in Smash...
I do, personally, like the obscure/long-forgotten ones though ..as I mentioned earlier, Smash 64 was the game that introduced me to Ness (and, off the back of it, Mother/EarthBound) - and I'd love it if they could find some other character from another little gem of a game that I'd never heard of so I could have that 'Ness moment' again!
Can't deny that it'd be fun to have some crazy entries - like Luke Skywalker/Darth Vader - thrown in...but I won't hold my breath!
@Haru17 Although, Pokemon is in a strange position. If we remove Greninja we have a grand total of one non-generation I Pokemon. I understand that generation I is iconic and all, but the generation I bias in so much stuff lately bothers me and many others. Yet I don't like the idea of Mewtwo, Charizard, Jigglypuff, etc., not returning because they are unique Smash characters and seeing unique characters removed always bothers me.
With Charizard and Greninja we have actually have a pattern of starters. It could be - probably even is - purely coincidental. However, it does open up the door for a third Grass starter to complete a starter trio theme. It would be a great way to implement another non-generation I Pokemon into the mix, like Decidueye.
If we can have six Fire Emblem characters, I think we can afford another character for one of Nintendo's largest franchises ever. I mean, in SSB4 FE and Pokemon are equal in character representation. That's very strange.
@DarthNocturnal Isaac's absence as an AT from SSB4 is one of the biggest oddities to me.
When it was revealed that he wasn't an AT, I thought it was a good sign for him in what we thought would be extra characters due to a false leak, or DLC. Sadly, that wasn't the case either way. I don't know what to think anymore. He's such a great character to be made playable, Sakurai could have so much fun with him... But the Golden Sun franchise looks like it is dead. =(
