My hope for Smash Bros is that Sakurai doesn't die.

Which is another reason I want them to pull a Splatoon. I would genuinely prefer a 30 or so roster at launch with regular updates afterwards to get to post-DLC Smash 4 levels and beyond in the future, for example. Instead of overwhelming people with more and more content that I'm certain most players never get to (HEY KIDS WHO WANTS TO PLAY WII U CLASSIC MODE 50 TIMES vomits)

And tbh, I want every major online multiplayer focused game to pull a Splatoon for how it does content. Rapid fire updates throughout a long period of time for free would motivate me to play more online multiplayer games than just overwhelming me at launch (or for certain publishers, underwhelm me at launch and expect people to either pay for a season pass or exploit some people's gambling addictions)

@kkslider5552000 Looking at all the silly characters mentioned in the top 10 new Smash characters thread, I think we've pretty much hit the bottom of the barrel in terms of good (and plausible) characters anyway. Reduce the roster to 30-40 with a couple of new characters included and if they want to, update the game with a dozen or so new characters. There's no point in having 60 or 70 characters.

I'd also like it if most of the new characters are of recent games. So the Inklings make sense. But characters like Crystal? There's a good reason why they're dropped.

The Nintendo Switch Super Smash Bros. will need strong 3rd party characters to compete with its predecessors - here are six that would do the trick
How does Sakurai up the ante from announcing Snake, Mega Man, Pac-Man, and Ryu from previous E3s?

[removed]

The only one of those characters I'd possibly entertain as a suitable, realistic and deserving fit would be Rayman. It's true though, what 3rd party character will have the hype levels of previous reveals?

@Octane I'm not asking anybody to visit the site. They can take it or leave it. I didn't want to spoil the list. If I was asking someone to visit my site or something, you'd maybe have a point.

I tend to only stick to the headline and link generally, maybe the odd image, as I've been told off(not just on this site) for previously copying and pasting articles as it means there's no point in clicking on the link and it is kind of plagiarism.

And my question is a general one, it doesn't have to be about the above story, "what 3rd party character will have the hype levels of previous reveals?"

RE: Potentially stripping back the roster

I dunno - I think that one of the great things about Smash is that it serves as something of an advert for a wider catalogue of games. I remember playing the original game on the N64 and discovering Ness for the first time - I didn't know who he was and wasn't familiar with EarthBound/Mother - but came to really like him as a character, so decided to check out the game he came from...and, to my absolute delight, uncovered a real gem - all thanks to Smash! ..that really stands out as one of my favourite gaming memories really - and I'd love to think that I could fall in love with another Smash character and unearth another gem of a game off the back of it!

However, I do take the point that the full roster looks kind of over-cluttered these days...

Untitled

Perhaps, as a solution, they could retain all of the characters (and maybe even add some more) - but have a couple of different 'quick play' modes; one with the 'clutter hell' selection screen (above), the other with a stripped-back selection of 20-or-so randomly selected characters? (which would not only look cleaner, but also force players to use other characters as their 'main' might not be available?)

...or maybe they could just condense a few of them down in to single tiles - do Link/Toon Link, Samus/Zero Suit Samus (etc) really need separate icons? (...they could still have different move sets - but just be grouped together under one tile instead)

If they were to strip the game back, they'd have to find some kind of 'middle ground' - otherwise, I fear that if they were to remove any fan favourites from the game (basically any character!) the internet would go in to raging meltdown!

Untitled

(...and as fun as that would be - I don't think that Nintendo would want the inevitable backlash that'd follow!)

Do the same as I've suggested with Mario Kart, then. Category 'folders' for certain characters. Since this is Smash, the obvious way to do that is by series - at least for the main ones. There could even be a retro folder for characters like Duck Hunt, Game and Watch, and Ness/Lucas. That would mean changing up how the character select screen is displayed, but I'm sure such changes could be implemented easy enough.

The reason I, and many others I'm sure, hope it's a port is simply because I can't expect a new game to put out the same amount of content that Wii U did. Starting from scratch again seems like a missed opportunity considering much of the DLC went unplayed by people who were waiting for some sort of complete bundle. A port would solve many issues where a new game just seems like creating expectations that will inevitably be disappointing to many people if they can't match the sheer output that the last games did.

I feel like Cloud, Bayonetta, and Ryu didn't get enough of a chance to shine as a part of the cast, so I hope they come back either way. I'm definitely not expecting (or even want) more characters overall, though. At some point it just becomes too much.

Folders would look a bit tacky. Imagine 8 players opening and closing folders, blocking the view for others.

If your character roster needs folders, you know you've got a problem.

I agree that there are some insanely goofy ideas for additional characters out there. I did my list and tried to keep it with characters that would at the very least have unique movesets.

I've also heard the idea of reducing the roster and "trimming the fat." There are a number of characters that may be favorites of some, but could ultimately be removed and the game losing nothing but a skin. And some that are just... unnecessary, and would be better off as an assist trophy.

I wouldn't be heartbroken to see these characters removed:
Bowser Jr.
Corrin
Dark Pit
Dr. Mario
Falco
Greninja
Ike
Jigglypuff
Lucas
Lucina
Mewtwo
Mr. Game and Watch (this one might hurt me a little)
Olimar
Palutena
R.O.B.
Robin
Rosalina & Luma
Sheik
Shulk
Toon Link
Villager
Wii Fit Trainer

And with 3rd party issues, we could expect to see Ryu and Cloud go.

I don't think that having folders is that bad an idea! ..it'd be nice to at least have a few different 'character selection screen format' options in the settings menu so that players could chose their favoured style (at least that way people could de-clutter the select screen if they wished)

I suppose they could perhaps trim the roster a little bit, but cutting it in half would go down like a lead balloon! Particularly as the series itself barely changes from game-to-game - it'd just make the Switch version feel 'half baked' - and the backlash would be hellish!

I mean, let's say for a second they combine the icons for Dr. Mario and Mario, Dark Pit and Pit, Zelda and Shiek, Samus and Zero Suit Samus, Link and Toon Link, and Lucina and Marth. That's six icons down, and not be too confusing in my opinion. Assuming we see a few cuts, (Cloud and Ryu seem very likely) we might end up with the same number of icons as there currently is.

I could see something like that.

@DarkSim01 I'd say keep Olimar and the Villager, just to have at least one character represent their franchise. They can definitely ditch a bunch of Fire Emblem characters and add new ones from the new game. Falco is pointless after years without a good Star Fox game, we still have Fox after all. Wii Fit Trainer can go, that era has passed. Switch out some of the Pokemon characters, same for Shulk. Replace him with Rex, or whatever he's called. Sheik and booty Samus can go as well, we still have Zelda and regular ol' Samus. But yeah, I generally agree, you can get rid of a lot of characters, because a lot are only kept in the games for the sake of keeping them in.

And I'd like to see some characters that were recently introduced, like the Inklings (confirmed obv)., but also an ARMS characters for example. Snipperclips? If they can make it work, go for it. Maybe Captain Toad as well? He has his own game on Wii U, 3DS and Switch, so why not?

Octane

Eel

If Captain Falcon gets to stay then Jigglypuff does too.

At least one of them still appears in other games.

@link3710 Yeah, I think that would be the most palatable solution really - if they cut the roster, they'd have to make major improvements elsewhere - and it's difficult to imagine how they'd achieve that in such a settled and relatively unchanged franchise...but, at the same time, an overly cluttered screen wouldn't be ideal (especially in handheld mode) - so perhaps that'd be the best way of going about it

@Octane Snipperclips could be awesome! They could 'snip' different characters in different ways - maybe by trimming Mario's moustache? ..or giving Link a different hairstyle with each 'cut'? ..oh man, the more I think about it, the more I want it!
