A port wouldn't make sense, Smash 4 was good, but after a while it became clear it was quite flawed (I only played For Glory, because that is the only way to play)
Too defensive (roll, shield, grab). At least half the players in For Glory won't attack you, but wait until you do.
No rankings
Final Destination was a bad idea for For Glory, needs more variation so it doesn't favor ground characters
No combos
Some really annoying characters (Cloud, Sonic)
Too many characters with swords
Can't see if somebody changes his character between matches
No character customization online
Besides, Smash is a system seller with a very strong community. I'm pretty sure this will be a new game.
@AlternateButtons Well 3DS was unplayable online the lag was so bad. I never played Wii U obviously, but I've seen several streams where that version was lagging severely or entering patches of heavy latency. It seems like one of those games that slows to a crawl if all of the players don't have a perfect connection.
I don't get the sword criticism though. Only Link, the Fire Emblem characters, and a few other RPG characters had swords, not even 1/3 of the roster. If you want to play an unarmed fighter, pick a Pokemon or Mario character — that much seems easy.
@Meowpheel@Haru17 I have the Wii U version. Its online is excellent, but I mainly play in For Glory mode (1v1). I almost never get any lag, only very infrequently. My friend tells me the 3DS version is terrible online in general so that's an area the two versions differ in.
Hoping the Switch version at least has that level. Considering there's paid online now I'd argue it has to at least be BETTER than that.
@EvilLucario To be fair that's just one person's experience, and I might be misremembering what he said. I can attest to the Wii U version online being excellent and playable (unlike the mess that Brawl online was), but I only played 1v1 For Glory so maybe that's why.
From what I hear the problem is that on smash 4, the online is only as good as the weakest connection involved.
So obviously when playing with 3 other people the chances of getting a stinker are three times higher. Maybe even more when you consider that for fun would be much more inviting for more kinds of people.
@BigKing There are plenty of combos in Smash 4, part of the reason Bayonetta is so controversial at the moment is her ridiculously long combos. This is just something unique to Smash, damage percent and weight values mean the same combos don't work in all situations.
And no fighting game online lets you see the character your opponent is using until you start the match with them, otherwise you risk devolving into a counterpick standoff.
From what I've played and seen of SSB4, the online lag issue was far from 'every frame counts.' But anyway, I was just replying to someone. Splitscreen is the only aspect of multiplayer functionality that really matters to me in a competitive game. I probably won't even be paying for Switch online this year if all they have is 1.5 versions of Smash 4 and Splatoon.
In any case, let's hope Nintendo shows some gameplay before E3 or releases a demo so we can tell whether it's using forWiiU as a framework or not. Maybe they'll actually give Temple a face lift this time.
Temple is probably my favorite stage, I remember playing Melee and Brawl on that map a ton in my youth. I don't really care about whatever complaints there may be, no one's forcing you to play on it. The stage sure could use some new background geometry though, and the flat moss textures aren't exactly fooling anyone.
I'll be honest, I didn't get the GCN adapter for Wii U and I didn't get into that one remotely as much as the other Smash Bros games. It's hard to not see the correlation in that tbh. I've probably put more time into playing Smash Bros on a GCN controller than I've put into the entire Zelda and Metroid series combined.
It's better than like all of the 3DS stages that are flat or horizontal floating platform stages, many of which have ancient pixel art or annoying borders.

You prove my point by naming Bayonetta, because that's the only character with some combos. And it's broken. Oh and Greninja.
And actually, I think it was Brawl that had a flashing white indicator that the other player was switching characters. You couldn't see which character he picked, but you could see that he was moving his chip around.
To he honest I prefer any stage on the 3ds to Temple.
Temple is 80% useless stalling areas and 20% annoying stalling areas.
I'd rather have a stage where the match will end quickly instead of watching the last two players run away from each other or bouncing for ten minutes.
The WiiU game then got the great idea of including even larger stages nobody actually wants to play in. Not even Temple fans.
