@BabyYoda71 @JaxonH i went the other route and was second guessing myself the entire time. I actually wound up being happy I went that way after the dust settled. And then there's another decision shortly after that I'm happy I went with once events unfolded shortly after. Love the big choices in this game.

They're so good, aren't they?

I love how many branching paths there are. Branch into 2 distinct paths, with multiple choices within each path, then it ultimately collapses back into the singular main path. Few chapters later it branches again, and collapses back. Then it branches one final time for 4 different possible endings.

I LOVE choice in SRPGs. Fire Emblem Fates did it (that game had problems but I still loved the 3 branching paths), Fire Emblem Three Houses did it (with 3 main paths, one of which then branched again half ways through into 2 distinct paths, and then another path via DLC, though that was less a branching path and more a separate story). And now Triangle Strategy does it.

But while FE has offered one distinct choice that branches the rest of the game (aside from Black Eagles which also branched) Triangle Strategy interweaves choice all throughout the story, up to the very end. And, unlike Fire Emblem, there's no guarantee your choice will be the chosen path taken. It's on you to persuade your party to vote in line with your desired path, and you very well may fail in doing so.

I love that. It's just so well done!

@JaxonH hah yep. All good stuff. 3 houses is a such a good one. I still need to go back and do the other campaigns as soon as I have some free time. It's perhaps one of my top 10 games of all time.

Triangle is starting to creep up into that FE love I have. It's the right balance between complexity, and easy to grasp. The gameplay really shines and I do love the branching pathways based on decisions.

I'm really hoping this does well enough to look into sequels, even if it's a completely different story just like the FE series does. SRPGs are starting to become a favorite genre of mine.

Same.

But I'm most attracted to a very specific subset of srpg. Games where you have political turmoil, interesting characters and story, mages, healers, etc.

Of course, I did love Mario Rabbids a ton, and that doesn't exactly fit the profile. Same for XCOM 2, Civilization VI, Valkyria Chronicles, and even Advance Wars was starting to pique my interest.

But the srpgs like Fire Emblem and Triangle Strategy are just muah! Perfecto!

@JaxonH have you tried South Park: Fractured But Whole? It was actually the first SRPG I played, then it opened up the doors for Mario + Rabbids and so on. It's surprisingly fun and worthy of a shot. It's on sale atm too.

@JaxonH Yeah… I had to think about it for a while, but since Roland voted to sacrifice himself I chose that. I failed to change the opinion of anyone, just convinced Anna.

Nice to hear Fire Emblem Fates has a similar structure… it’s one of the games I’m planning on getting on 3DS before it shuts down. I have 9 games on it and Wii U I want and they’re all RPGs. Still haven’t tried Three Houses, I decided to get this one first.

Something I’ve been liking about this game that’s not really a big deal is that Serenoa isn’t the “quiet hero” trope that’s in most RPGs… it doesn’t matter that much, but it just annoys me your character never talks in Zelda and Genshin and Undertale… I’m just happy to play as an extrovert like me, without it ruining anything - you still make the big decisions, he just says things that don’t change anything. (:

Another small detail I thought was brilliant was, in the middle of Chapter 4 I think, when dramatic things started happening, the music that played on the Map changed - it was very major and upkey in the beginning, but became more dark and dramatic. I just thought it was really cool.

If you're looking into 3DS strategy games, I also recommend Fire Emblem Awakening, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia and Stella Glow. Which, Stella Glow was an Atlus published title that saw little fanfare. But it was actually pretty good.

@NintendoByNature
I own it and the DLC, but barely played it. Same for Stick of Truth.

Is it really a strategy game though? I thought it was more turn based RPG?

@JaxonH stick of truth is more of a JRPG style game as where Fractured is grid based super hero themed srpg. I played it a few years ago, but there's definitely some strategy involved from what I recall. Fire it up and check it out for a few. It wouldn't hurt.

@NintendoByNature
I remember it now! I played a few hours when it released. Yes, it uses a grid system in the sequel, so it is basically a turn based strategy game!

Having to diligently ration my micro SD space for my main 1TB card, I kept Stick of Truth installed but archived Fractured But Whole, and put it on micro SD #3 (I have two spare 1TB cards that tuck into a 3D printed cartridge with micro SD slots to store them).

The file size was pretty big, close to 20GB iirc. But if it's a lot better than the first, I may install it on the main SD again. I'd just heard the first was a bit better. But, as time goes on, I'm becoming less interested in turn based RPG and becoming more interested in turn based SRPG. The added dimension of depth from location (and orientation, in some cases such as Triangle Strategy) keeps combat from feeling too boring and monotonous.

@JaxonH yea, I'm kinda getting the same way. While I can play a regular turned based rpg, it feels a little more engaging when you're moving pieces around a board to get the right angle. Definitely give it another look. I actually liked it a whole lot more than the first ( which was still a great game btw). It's only like 15 or so hours from what I recall, so you can knock it out in a week if you get engaged.

I think it's already doing well enough for them to be thinking about making another one, if they hadn't already thought about that, @NintendoByNature ....

While that's true, I look at Octopath Traveler which sold 2m+ and that game didn't get a sequel. In which case, I have to conclude its very unlikely Triabgle Strategy will at 1m (assuming it hits 1m).

I'd love nothing more than to see a follow up, but they seem to be more interested in making new games each time.

Then again, Octopath Traveler doesn't lend itself well to a sequel, but they are remaking Live A Live, which it's based on. Perhaps they'll also remake Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, which Triangle Strategy is based on. Or at the very least, Final Fantasy Tactics.

That's as much as I dare to hope for.

Well, they were doing Octopath for mobile or something, iirc, @JaxonH .... We'll see, it's early days for TS sales yet! & maybe they are working on some sort of follow up to OT, too? Certainly looking forward to Live A Live, though, so I'm pretty happy with their output, overall

@JaxonH I have all the 3DS Fire Emblem ones on my list (I’ve never tried the series, so I’m planning on starting with Awakening just to make sure I like it), but I’ve never heard of Stella Glow. I’ll look at it (:

Another review dropped, and I enjoyed this one as they clearly made the connection to Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

All I have to say is WTF about the last chapter. I guessed something similar but not quite this and I am getting murdered. Just WTF. I would like to stab Lyla in her sleep right now.

Edit: ok I died twice but I got through it. I will likely start a new game to get all the characters but I don’t think I will alter the route. As it mostly aligned with my own values. Minus one chapter.
