That patent does indeed say that but, as I understand it, that's not how DLSS works. DLSS still requires the higher resolution assets because DLSS is not really upscaling the image itself.

What DLSS does, and the images in that patent show this, is ask the game engine to only render the first of every 4 pixels. Then the next frame it asks it to render the second of every 4 pixels. And so on. By the fourth frame it has the full image. But that alone? It's just straight up checkerboard rendering, which is what the PS4 did, DLSS goes further and the AI magic is in how it combines it

So you have these four pixels, one frame apart in time. Where do they go? Well, you can track where objects moved in the scene based on information the engine gives you. And you then feed that information about where objects moved and the state of the previous pixels into the black box. And out the other side comes an image that has combined those things

But if you're thinking about how the above works you'll realise that you still need those higher resolution assets. Because you're still rendering each frame with that level of detail. It's just you're not rendering all of the pixels in every frame

FWIW, I generally think DLSS on Switch 2 will mostly be used to push games up to 1080p/1440p rather than try and get to 4K. I think 4K will happen in some cases but as a guess I would think it's mostly going to be something that certain games just hit natively

I assume they will want to keep the main UI extremely fast, but they will have a lot more ram to play with so hopefully we will get something more (apart from improving the eShop which I assume is a priority).

Even though the Switch 2 is reported to use the same base OS as the Switch, it doesn’t mean the UI will also be the same. It might be redesigned.

I found some Switch 2 HOME Menu UI concepts on Reddit and Twitter which look like they keep the simplicity of the Switch UI but also show backgrounds from different games.

Hopefully one of those 2 becomes the Switch 2’s UI (I somehow lean more towards the one from Twitter. Close to PS4/PS5 but looks more lively than the original Switch’s UI).

I also like how they put game backgrounds as themes there, which should be a feature on Switch 2. Maybe we’ll also get some sort of Theme Shop to not only get the themes we want, but also choosing the music we want to have playing in the HOME Menu. In fact, if they bring themes to Switch 2, they should also allow us to get some with My Nintendo Platinum Points.

I think next week is going to be something Switch 1 related, maybe a Switch 1 Direct or a trailer for XCX comparable to this one for XC1:

So expect the usual “There will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during this presentation” for this Direct.

Maybe something related to the Switch 2 will come later this month.

There are a whole bunch of wild theories for it floating around. I think it's just for charging

Wait. If it ends up becoming another charging port, there would be 2. If you connect a USB-C cable to one of them first and then connect one to the other, will it end up damaging the battery or will one of the ports be disabled?

@MrCarlos46
USB charging is smart enough to know when the battery is full or almost full. The device can communicate with the charger. The same would be true if you had two charging ports

As a side note, there was a Nintendo patent floating around regarding being able to share JoyCon battery charge for the main device. So it's possible, especially with the JoyCon being physically larger this time around, we may end up seeing something like that

Along the same lines there has been some confusion with the new motherboard leak. There's a chip on the motherboard that's used as a USB Hub. It makes sense to have one in the dock, because there are multiple USB ports, but on the main unit? A bit strange given there are only two ports one of which is fully accounted for and the other being a single port. There's speculation that the tech behind the JoyCon has been enhanced and that this time around they are, electrically, just wired USB controllers. If so that could potentially make it easier to develop non-standard JoyCon

It’s because I thought of a scenario where while charging the Switch 2 out of the dock, someone wanted to make it charge faster, and they think they can accomplish it by plugging another USB-C cable in. But what happens as soon as they do it, the battery then starts heating up as it can’t handle all the power being brought by both cables at the same time, potentially exploding and damaging the Switch 2.

Unless they implement a system so only one port is actively charging if both ports have a charger connected.

This was why I came up with possible accessories for the top USB-C port.

Although if they end up pushing the Switch 2’s release date to September, it may be to also coincide with Super Mario’s 40th anniversary, so if they make the new 3D Mario or Mario Kart come out in September, would only make sense for the Switch 2 and the other launch titles to also come out at that time.

@MrCarlos46 Don’t know if it would be wise for Nintendo to hold out until September to release the Switch 2, especially given how big GTA VI is going to be. It’s gonna take a huge amount of spotlight away from anything anyone else does.

I don't think Nintendo cares about the exact date too much; the 30th anniversary celebration went from April to December. I suspect they will count new 3D Mario as part of the 40th anniversary no matter when it comes out.

@FragRed I think GTA6 is getting delayed considering no news in 2024 and Nintendo takes advantage of the delay.

The 35th anniversary celebration went on from September to March, partly because of the pandemic.

If the 40th anniversary celebration starts in the second half of 2025, assuming the Switch 2 comes out by the end of the first half of 2025 (likely in Q2 2025), the new 3D Mario and maybe also new Mario Kart could be the kickstarter to the Mario 40th anniversary celebration.

@FragRed
I don't think it would be wise, either. This thing is coming out between March and June, guaranteed.

FragRed

@rallydefault I totally agree. Everyone likes to talk about how Nintendo don’t care about the competition etc etc, but they obviously do because they are a business. And more importantly, Nintendo are a business that relies heavily on selling hardware in order to sell their first party software so a game like GTA VI is absolutely something they take seriously.

Worth noting that the tweet you linked to is jumping to a whole bunch of conclusions. Centro isn't really a source, they're recyclers of other posts. I'm not sure there's enough in that photo to conclude it's 8nm

Meanwhile on Famiboards, it appeared to have been analyzed and someone concluded on the Switch 2 actually using Samsung 5nm, but we’re not sure on what it will actually use.

At this point with us still knowing nothing I'm thinking either Summer or Fall maybe in the latter part of that window. They've really been dragging their feet with this thing that I can't see it coming any earlier than that, and I don't see it taking so long that it slips into 2026.

@MrCarlos46 Of course yeah. So my predicted window is June to November specifically. December is obviously off the table because of the holidays.
