@rallydefault Yeah, it's a fraud prevention thing.

It's something to do with credit card fraud being much harder to detect and pursue when it happens outside the issuing country; that's long been a thing but it must have been getting to the point where the chargebacks just weren't worth the extra business they got. You can still get around it with gift cards, at least.

@MrCarlos46 I think we can safely say that the talk of day one tariffs on all Chinese goods was hot air now that it's been over a week.
On the question of semiconductor production though, the US is in the middle of a program to expand it considerably - the CHIPS act passed by the previous administration - and that's probably not going to be very competitive without government subsidies and protectionism. Some tariffs on imported chips that could instead be made in the US might come to pass as a result.

Except the US doesn’t have the same skill as Taiwan in producing the same kind of chips. It would take years to not only build the plants but to also train them. TSMC would also be affected by the tariffs.

@MrCarlos46 TSMC are building some plants in the US and, due to a lack of local talent, they'll be bringing staff over from Taiwan to help run them. Samsung, who make the SoC for the Switch 2 are also expanding their operations there.

Anyway, we've finally got some tariffs now and... they're mostly on Mexico and Canada! Good luck to anyone in the business of international trade; they've got a few sleepless nights ahead this week.

@Matt_Barber Just unknown what will make Nintendo open up a final production line in the US and send in kits to build consoles there, basically doing the inverse of what PlayStation does (they run in the US and their final production line is in Japan), I kinda also wanna know more of how the final production line could work. Where could they even set one up?

@MrCarlos46 For Nintendo to move production to the US, I'd think that there would need to be an unambiguous signal that there would be significant tariffs on imported games consoles. It's not something that they'd do purely on speculation or emergency tariffs that may be short lived. Even the 10% tariff on Chinese goods sticks, it probably wouldn't move the needle in itself, especially when they can skirt around it by shipping mostly from Vietnam.

The reason for doing only final assembly would be that it'd require a minimum of specialist labor and equipment, and space in existing electronics factories could be adapted to the job in a relatively short time. Even so, if everyone in the consumer electronics industries tries to relocate at once, they'd be fighting over a relatively small amount of suitable facilities that are sitting idle.

@MrCarlos46 I'd think it unlikely that they'd move all production to Vietnam. China is still probably cheaper overall and most of the world isn't actively engaging in a trade war with the country.

It's mostly just a case of making sure that they've got enough capacity to service the US market. They may require a further expansion if the Switch 2 is enough of a hit, I suppose.

@Matt_Barber There are still more countries Nintendo can expand to, like more into Latin America, Central Eastern Europe, and even Asia.

This could also be the chance for Nintendo to support more languages in the UI and their games starting with the Switch 2, like Arabic, Danish, Polish, Czech, Romanian, Greek, Turkish, Slovak, Thai, Swedish, Indonesian, Hungarian, Vietnamese, etc.

Which reminds me, why hasn’t Nintendo opened an eShop for Turkey or Indonesia yet?

My biggest fear or suppose fear is People giving out misinformation and refusing to admit when they don't know. No one has even seen or test the Switch 2 yet - beyond Devs and Nintendo. We got so many experts knowing the Switch 2 inside and out from the trailer. As for NSO going up that's bound to happen.

@Rainz
Hmm, I have no idea how they're going to integrate mouse controllers into a S2 controller. I'd personally rather just use gyro motion pointer controls, as long as they finally include a reference(a Sensor bar, or just something else entirely.) like they did with Wii & Wii U. And ya, I mean...You'd think Nintendo would 1-UP the DualSense's Haptics with their new Super HD Rumble if that even comes to fruition.
