That’s fair, I think. Gurumin was literally the last game I bought for the PSP, before I mothballed it for about a decade. Never finished it. I didn’t hate the game, but I just fell off it. Just like I kept falling off platforms due to the awkward perspective and that special move. I remember the game fairly fondly - but it did feel a bit of a “children’s first ARPG”.
I really liked Trails in the Sky FC, though, after playing it last year. The gameplay itself is nothing special, but I really enjoyed the characters. Estelle is a great protagonist, and one or two of the side characters are full of personality.
As for the 3DS, I’m now about 10hrs into SMT IV:A. And I love it.
@Ralizah I had the exact same feelings towards Gurumin when I played it a few years ago. I found the Nintendolife review to be extremely generous, as well as many other reviews I've seen. All of the game's components ranged from mediocre to poor for me. There are much better action RPGs out there, even on the 3DS.
@Krull Most JRPG fans I've talked to enjoy Trails FC, so I'll admit my opinion is probably an unpopular one within our niche. With that said, I found the cast to be forgettable, the plot development glacial, the gameplay clunky and dated, and the incest-bait central romance rubbed me the wrong way. Still not sure if I'm going to play SC or not, as I've heard stuff actually happens in that one. I might just move on to Zero no Kiseki and see if that one resonates with me more.
And yeah, SMT IV: Apocalypse is fab.
@Cynas Yeah, it really doesn't do any one thing particularly well, does it? I can't imagine people even paying attention to it at all if it didn't have one of the oldest names in Japanese video game development behind it.
I do think it'd probably be a slightly better time on PC vs. 3DS or PSP, but even then, it's nothing I'd recommend to anyone.
I'm a late adopter of the 3ds(2017 I believe?)..with that said, I really didnt buy many games for it as switch has been my primary console. Ive mostly used it for some vc, and a few 1st party games. Between first party and 3rd party games, im looking for some must owns on the 3ds. Mostly action/adventure, arpg, jrpg and even platformers under the radar. Thanks in advance.
Guys since we're talking about 3DS do you think it's safe at this point to mod one? I've been considering it for a while but since the 3DS hasn't been discontinued officially yet i'm worried Nintendo may somehow be able to ban me or there's the possibility of an update that would ruin my fun. Should i wait or go ahead?

Better consider the unmodded machines no matter how hard to find Unmodded 3DS machines right now.
Here in Indonesia currently, almost 99% 3DS machines has been jailbroken by CFW Luma. 😱
But i have successfully bought All Original 3DS machines in 3 different regions (USA, Japan, PAL).
@NintendoByNature Not sure if you've gotten A Link Between Worlds already (I'm guessing yes judging by your avatar), but if not, I HIGHLY recommend it. One of the best Zelda games IMO. OoT and MM are great additions to your 3DS library too, they're even better than the N64 versions.
I also recommend Fantasy Life, it's one of the more under-the-radar games on the platform. Has a charming art style and I like how there's many different jobs you can take, as well. Never got into Monster Hunter, but you might like it. The one I've played was MH4U. Puzzle & Dragons is another one I'd recommend, it's basically a puzzle game combined with an RPG, if you're into that sort of thing. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is the best original M&L game on the 3DS IMO, so I recommend that too. I've also played a couple Fire Emblem games on it, specifically FE Awakening and FE Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Both are great games if you're into strategy RPGs. I've also played Rhythm Thief and I enjoyed it, but I didn't get too far into it. Look into it and see if that's your forte.
@Zeldafan79 I'm guessing it's not safe at the moment. Maybe wait until the online multiplayer servers and eShop get shut down, just to be on the safe side.

Favorite game: Super Mario 3D World
AKA MarioVillager92. Ask if you want to be Switch friends with me, but I want to get to know you first. Thanks! ❤️
I finally redeemed a My Nintendo discount and downloaded Mario & Luigi: Dream Team last night. It's very rare that I go the digital route with retail 3DS games, but it was definitely cheaper than what online stores are wanting (new or used) for the physical cartridge. Plus, the discount expires after this month. The question is when I'll get around to playing it. XD
@NintendoByNature Let's see....I'll list the must-haves out of my own collection (that I've played) based on those criteria (Though I'm almost sure you have the Zelda games covered lol):
Ocarina of Time 3D
Majora's Mask 3D
A Link Between Worlds
Super Mario 3D Land
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Luigi's Mansion
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Bravely Default
Bravely Second
Dragon Quest VIII (long, but worth it)
Ever Oasis
Metroid: Samus Returns
Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology (Haven't played yet, but people seem to love it)
Though I haven't played these yet, I'm told the Mario & Luigi series is decent.
If you're into SRPGs, you also can't go wrong with any of the 3DS Fire Emblem games.
@MarioLover92@Tyranexx thanks you two. I have a bulk of those but some I don't, so I appreciate it. Looks like I'll have to gradually gain the following..
-fantasy life
-The fire emblem games
-DKCR
-LM1
-the bravely games
-the dragon quest games
-ever oasis
I recently grabbed mario and Luigi DT with the platinum rewards too lol
Out of the FE games, I admittedly haven't played Fire Emblem Echoes quite yet but have heard it's decent; it is a black sheep of sorts as it's a remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden and does a few things differently compared to the rest of the series. For an introductory game if you haven't played FE, I highly recommend starting with Awakening; it's the game that got me into the series. Both Fates games are fun in different ways, though their plots are a bit...eh. Haven't played the Revelation DLC/third game.
10-4 on both Bravely games; the battle and job systems are insanely fun, the 3D effect is used well, and there are some interesting twists to the plots. Play them in order as BS is a direct sequel.
I own but didn't mention DQ VII, partially because I haven't played it yet. It's known to be a long haul, but the 3DS version is more streamlined than the PS1 original. Many DQ fans seem to love it.
Not sure if you're into Kirby, but Kirby: Planet Robobot is recommended by fans. Not one I've played yet either, though I'm debating about starting it soon.
Currently playing: Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake (Switch), Hades (Switch)
@NintendoByNature I forgot to also mention that Ever Oasis is a game by Grezzo (studio who handled the N64 3DS Zelda remakes). It's a sort of action/adventure game with town/resource management thrown in. I consider it a hidden gem. There's a demo if you're on the fence; that's what sold me lol.
You definitely have your work cut out for ya.
Currently playing: Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake (Switch), Hades (Switch)
@NintendoByNature There's definitely enough to keep someone playing for awhile; quests, building and managing your oasis, various dungeons, party members to train up...etc. There are a few minor things that hold it back from GOTY material, but IMO it has great series potential.
Currently playing: Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake (Switch), Hades (Switch)
@NintendoByNature If you don't own Poochy and Yoshi's Woolly World already, I highly recommend it.
Also look into Etrian Odyssey IV and Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse.
Also, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars.
And, while it doesn't line up with your criteria, the six mainline Ace Attorney games are must plays. The first three can be purchased via NDS on cartridge, or you can digitally download an inexpensive collection of the first three games on 3DS with upgrades. It goes for $14.99 or so during Capcom's frequent sales.
@Ralizah sweeeeeeet. Thanks for the recs. Loved crafted world so ill definitely check out woolly. Also ill check out etrian. Smt is something I'm considering with the 5 trailer recently. It'll all be brand new to me though.
Ill give the ace attorney game a look. Theyre on swirth as well right?
