Donkey Kong Country - Box Art Brawl
Image: Nintendo Life

Hello and welcome back to your weekly round of Box Art Brawl!

Before we leave the courtroom behind and move on somewhere a bit warmer, let's take a look at last week's results. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, the original Ace Attorney game, stood in the BAB docks, but it was an easy win for North America, which took 53% of your votes. Japan wasn't too far behind with 33%, while European nostalgia put the white-background box with 14% of the votes.

This week, we're going back to a classic — the original Donkey Kong Country. Released in 1994 and developed by Rare, Donkey Kong Country set a new visual standard for the SNES at the time. It's aged beautifully today, and while we're always hankering for a new DK game, we've at least always got this to return to.

It's the west versus the east this week, as North America and Europe join forces against Japan. We think this'll be a tight one, but who knows!

Be sure to cast your votes in the poll below; but first, let's check out the box art designs themselves.

North America / Europe

Donkey Kong Country SNES - North America / Europe

If you owned a Super Nintendo, this probably brings back a lot of memories. Donkey Kong proudly at the front, bananas in hand. Kremlins in the background. Zingers buzzing around. Slippas slithering around. And Diddy Kong clinging onto Rambi. It also does a really effective job of evoking the in-game visuals and the dense platforming worlds you'll be playing through. Just a lovely shot of nostalgia.

Japan

Super Donkey Kong Super Famicom - Japan

The Japanese box art for Super Donkey Kong is going for a bit of a different feel. But here, all of Donkey Kong's friends are on show — Sqwuaks is down the bottom flapping his wings, and Expresso is leaning over DK's shoulder. A Necky joins the Zingers and a Slippa while we get to see a mountain alongside the jungle thicket. We love that DK and Diddy are together in this one, too. Another great bit of art for a fantastic game.
