Following a positively-received launch on all platforms, Dead Cells developer Motion Twin is now looking towards the game's future. Even though most of its staff are currently on a well-deserved break after three years of solid development, two of the game's team members took time out to explain some of the post-release content currently under construction.
The upcoming patch (scheduled to go into beta late October/ early November) will focus on balancing, polishing the overall experience and bug fixing, as well as adding in a new custom mode. This mode is designed to give players greater control over each of their runs. Here's the full description below:
The Custom Mode is designed to give you a new layer of control over the game, really giving you the ability to make “your” Dead Cells. For instance, one of the most requested feature was to be able to ban some weapons from the loot table once unlocked, or choose your starting gear. Many other modifications of the standard gameplay will also be possible.
After this, the team then plans to begin work on its first free DLC. This will focus on entirely new playable content. Currently, there's no exact date for when this will arrive. The development team then plans to sort out the game's future content - which it is still unsure about. The latest post even asked the community what it had in mind:
What do you guys think about paid DLC? Would you prefer regular light updates or more packaged, themed ones? More playable content in the vein of what’s already existing or exploring new ways to play the game through different modes? Everything is on the table...
Have you been playing Dead Cells on your Switch? Are you looking forward to future updates? What do you want the developers to focus on now that the game is out? Let us know in the comments.

My relationship with this game started a bit rough, as I didn't like it that much, but after spending more time in the world of Dead Cells it became something I do for at least half an hour each day.
This game is fast, fluid and responsive!
I like the game a lot but man I wish that game ran better.
@krvstkvlt ikr, it's my lunch break game haha. I never play it outside of lunch break, but during lunch break I go nuts in it for a good 30-45 minutes daily.
I haven't been able to put the game down, just hope that patch fixes some of the stuttering issues I have from time to time but it doesn't detract from the overall experience.
Add Mario and Yoshi into the game?
Love this game. Anything DLC wise I’m up for

I don't care what the new content is really, just getting more Dead Cells is fine by me... Maybe get rid of the Firebrands weapons though (god I hate those things)
More permanent runes, movement runes in particular.
Maybe one that lets you add different attributes to some actions?
Like a slide-kick instead of a roll when you double-tap the roll button, which could be used against specific enemies and to get through low tunnels that rolling can't, as well as used as a general attack to combo into hits with the rest of your gear?
Oh, on the gear side, more amulets and stuff?
There's plenty of weapons but the selection of stuff for the Prisoners collar gear slot is so pitifully small...
Also, it would be nice if gear, or at least collar slot gear, dropped from enemies more often.
Also... and I think this is the most important...
A secondary use for cells.
Once we've unlocked everything, cells kind of lose their purpose, and it would be nice if there was a way to make them continuously useful throughout the game.
Maybe a shop in levels at random, once you've unlocked a certain amount of the total pieces of gear in the game, that only takes cells in trade for really high level gear? Maybe even colorless slash legendary stuff?
Could make runs more interesting for those who are already through with the game as far as unlocking things goes...
I’m excited to be getting this on Monday as an anniversary gift.
Great to hear the developers will continue to support the game with new content and enhancements.
Bring the Frying pan as a weapon from the cartoon advert
I've yet to beat it. Made it to the boss during my last run, but he kicked my a** ^^ Haven't played it for the last couple of weeks due to Hollow Knight and Spider-Man, but I'm definitely planning to come to back as I really enjoyed. I think I'll wait for the patch though, as the performance was a bit rough in places and I have plenty of other things to play in the meantime. Also really looking forward to the DLC ... which btw is something I would actually be okay paying for from sound of it. Still, I won't complain about a free lunch neither ^^
I'm waiting for the updates and free DLC to get added first but I will definitely buy this game soon. It looks great.
What a game and more content on the way is very welcome.
Dead cells needs more save spots similar to Neon Chrome!
The one advantage of indie games which only receive a physical release later is that all of the followup goodies can be in the cart.
Love this game, but I think it really needs more unique enemy types and also I would like less platforming areas (spikes) because the controls just suck for this
I love the platforming areas cause that’s my bread and butter! Helps keep the game diverse and the player on their toes...plus like I said when there’s a challenge room I’m like Oh goody more cells!! More levels for sure...why not...how could I say no to my favorite game of 2018 getting an expansion??
I ordered the special edition of this game that the site posted awhile back in August. I'm excited for this to come in! I'm at the end of Hollow Knight, so this seems like a good time to jump into the game.
I put this game down after beating the Concierge. It was kind of fun, but having to beat that boss on every run got tiresome for me.
I may pick the game up again when this update comes out, maybe being able to choose my starting gear might make things a little less frustrating.
I got to a point with the game where I unlocked most of the upgrades that seemed worthwhile (potions, random starting weapon etc), but I felt like I hit a wall where I wasn't really working toward anything potentially helpful with each run any more. There were some upgrades I could still throw cells into, but they needed so many that I felt like maybe I was missing something in terms of how I was ever supposed to achieve them without a hundred more runs. By that point I was a little tired of running through the same 3-4 areas from the beginning.
I probably just suck at the genre, but the novelty wore off before I was able to beat the game.
I really loved the visuals and feel of the game, but I just don't think the genre is one to my taste. If they made a full on Metroidvania game using Dead Cell's style, I'd be very interested.
Yeah a way to remove some items would be awesome! A thing every Roguelite game is missing.
I would want a payed update the most. And in it i want more of everything. And maybe a not that the bosses are locked to a level. So its a bit random what boss u come up against. Ofc u need a lot more bosses then. Could be cool if we could like fuse weapons together. And it shouldn't just be the random stats with get out of the new weapon but maybe the unik onces too ^^
More base upgrades wouldn't hurt either
Most of all no matter if it gets to be a paid or not i want to be able to take more then just 3 mutations.
I don't want any updates, I want my life back! This game is crack!
Custom mode sounds great. I would like the ability to choose my weapons instead of them being random. Frost Blast is so amazing, I almost feel bad for using it! It may even be a bit broken.
@LeonBelmontX Yeah, he takes and deals so much damage, and some of his attacks later on are really hard to dodge. Even when I think I'm doing really well he still destroys me.
@Rika_Yoshitake IGN would like to welcome you into their ranks.
Have they fixed the frame skip issues while in portable mode? Been holding off on purchasing this because I heard they had some issues at launch.
One of my favorite indies of all time
The ability to go back among previously explored areas in your run.
