Although the Wii U version was not forthcoming, the 3DS iteration of the popular 2D mining game Terraria - recently confirmed as coming to Nintendo platforms - was fully playable at this year's Gamecom.
We've put quite a lot of time into the PC version and it took a little while to get used to the controls on the 3DS port. This is common to any transition to new hardware but before long we were happily oblivious to the form factor of the device and could simply get on with enjoying the game.
The game offers both button and touch screen control, although to fully get the accuracy of the other versions the touch screen is really the way to go. Having a second screen on the 3DS was a real help as it could be used to display your inventory, a map or a zoomed-in view for more accurate building.
As you can see in the video here, we stuck with the stick and button controls to begin with, which worked fine. However, we did struggle to place platforms and items accurately. The touch screen zoomed-in method resolved this.
Not playable at the show was a multiplayer mode. This enables 4-8 players to journey together into new worlds. The 3DS version offers local WiFi play supported for up to 4 friends, while the Wii U can accommodate 8-player online or 4-player split-screen using Wii Remotes.
The game felt polished and seemed to be fully featured. It includes all of the PC version updates with over 1,300 crafting recipes, 150 enemies and 15 bosses to battle. Important for newcomers is that there is also a comprehensive tutorial mode.
Terraria hasn't got a firm date yet on either 3DS or Wii U, except the promise from publisher 505 Games that it will launch in early 2016.

Impressive, so it manages a zoomed-out mode with button controls for exploration and action, and a zoomed-in 1:1 mode for touch controls and building.
Definitely looking forward to this.
Me want
Never really gotten the appeal of these kinds of games. I do like the fact that it's got multiplayer in both versions, but I'm gonna be skipping this.
Hmmm, not really nuts about this. I played the PC version to death though, so that might have something to do with it.
A "mining game"? Come on, of all the things to do in Terraria mining is done only because you simply need the resources, there's so much stuff not involving mining I don't think you can really justify calling it that. And the controls look a bit difficult, so I don't think I'll be picking this one up, especially seeing as I already have it for PC.
Great news I plan on buying the wii u and 3ds version.
Is this going to be on New 3DS only? Or the original as well? I guess I'll probably just stick to the Wii U version if it's N3DS only.
@sWiTcHeRoO
Not sure yet, but I would wager N3DS only given the developer's statement about the 3DS being very weak.
Terraria for 3DS will not be up to 1.3, it's not even 1.2. Very excited for this version, even though it's ... well. Limited. There's no online mode(!) and it uses a fixed world size. So you can't choose between Small, Medium, or Large. Other than support for the C-Stick, the devs don't seem to have any intentions of 'upgrading' the game for New 3DS, either. Which sucks.
I only care about this on the Wii U, playing this on a tiny screen would be so annoying.
@Calllack
The same could be said about minecraft....
Shame, no online for 3DS. WiiU it is, then.
I'll be picking it up on the 3DS; can't wait.
Why is the Eye of Chutlu and The Twins awaken during the day?
@Moon
Where did you learn that the 3DS version won't be as current as the PC release?
The article says that "It includes all of the PC version updates with over 1,300 crafting recipes, 150 enemies and 15 bosses to battle."
I haven't had a chance to watch the video yet.
@FaustoM
The box art never was accurate, it also shows giant bats and fire imps, that don't spawn on the surface like that.
@RupeeClock Yeah I'd imagine. Plus the fact that they're playing on a N3DS cements that.
I have a Wii U at least, so I can get it there, but I would've liked the portability.
Will it feature the systems trademark stereoscopic 3D, do we know?
@RupeeClock Terraria's official forums. They've a channel set up for the Nintendo versions, and one of the devs is answering questions. The game might have some items from 1.2 & 1.3, but it doesn't mean it's up to date.
I hope the controls are not awkward. I loved the PC version of Terraria and would love to have it on the go. I actually have the smart phone version but that version uses touch controls only which I have never been a fan of and I don't have a vita yet.
@Spectra_Twilight
That's interesting, Terraria strikes me as a game that would need the full processing power of the N3DS to be playable.
It's not a game I would really compare to Minecraft much. They are very different, and each have their own strengths/flaws. Since both are amazing I would always recommend that people try out both.
With that said, I do love Terraria, and I'm currently playing through the 1.3 patch on PC. I can't honestly see any reason to really get the 3DS or Wii U versions at this point. I was thinking the 3DS one for some portability, but if it ends up being considerably inferior to the PC version I'd probably not be able to look past that while playing it.
@Spectra_Twilight - Unfortunately, policies like that ensure people skip Nintendo consoles for being 'kiddy'. Preventing a game from having online capabilities at all because some kind of age system can't be implemented? It's pathetic, and I hate to see it holding back good games on the platform.
Looking forward to it. My first Terraria experience was on iOS, as it was the cheapest one. I kind of liked it, but it got more tedious as you progressed. The controls look nice, the touch screen controls will probably be what I use. Might get both versions, probably not at the same time, and not for certain.
Logged about 40 hours of Terraria on steam. It's a solid game, plus the 1.3 update some nice add-ons. I don't know if I will pick it up for N3DS, but there is always the possibility. Looks like this version will be nice though for on the go.
I'd really like this for the 3ds. I know the controls are obviously better on the PC, but having this game on the go will be great.
@Spectra_Twilight Ooh! Really nice to hear, then. I don't really care that 3DS Terraria won't have online, I don't mind it as a bite-sized on-the-go option to kill my boredom (especially when I've been needing a game like that).
I'll leave the Wii U version for more serious grinding and possible online gameplay.
looks good.
Just wanted to ask what @AcesHigh73 did, will it have 3D? thanks
If the game has the 1.3 update, I will get the wii U version for sure.
@Spectra_Twilight The other previous gen console versions worlds are good in size, so hopefully the world size on the 3ds will be similar (if the 3ds has the processing power).
If there's no 3D, I won't buy it...
I've been super hyped for this game coming to the 3DS for so long and now I'm seeing rumors and post about it not having a 3D effect.
It's the only (but also a quite big) reason for me to buy again!
