Game Profile

A New Country for Old Friends

Controlled by a group of evil Tikis, the animals in Donkey Kong Island have raided Donkey Kong's Banana Hoard and stolen his stash of bananas – and he understandably wants them back. Retro Studios brings Donkey Kong back in a new side-scrolling adventure with familiar characters and new levels that reignite the passion players had for the Super NES original.

  • Retro Studios faithfully restores everything that made the original series great, from barrel cannons to mine carts, and then builds on those elements with stunning graphics and new layers of depth to the world and game play. The game offers the traditional side-scrolling experience everyone loved, but with levels created in fully rendered 3-D environments.
  • Diddy Kong joins the quest. With his trusty backpack, he can produce a jet pack or Peanut Pop Guns to give Donkey Kong more abilities.
  • For the first time ever, the franchise features the ability for two people to play together at the same time (additional accessories required and are sold separately) - one as Donkey Kong, one as Diddy Kong. Players can navigate the levels separately or as one unit. Diddy Kong can ride on Donkey Kong's back and hop off whenever he pleases, allowing novice players to ride on Donkey Kong's back through more challenging areas of the game.
  • Hidden items, puzzle pieces and other surprises are found all through the jungle. Spell out K-O-N-G by the end of each level to earn an extra bonus.
  • Motion controls give players a real feeling of control. Players move Donkey Kong using the Control Stick on the Nunchuk controller and can shake the Wii Remote controller to make Donkey Kong slap the ground.
  • Vibrant colors, beautiful graphics and fun characters draw players in. Even people who have never played a Donkey Kong game before can pick up a controller and start collecting loads of bananas.
  • Every level offers new fun and new challenges. Sometimes Donkey Kong is running through the jungle, sometimes his action takes place on a tropical beach and other times he must become a master of timing as he jumps chasms in a mine cart.

We really need a new Donkey Kong game that's not based on gimmicky peripherals (Bongo drums). The entire GameCube generation went by without a single platform game that didn't rely gimmicky Bongo Drums (Jungle Beat). And you could say that the lackluster racing game and subsequent rerelease of Jungle Beat on Wii emulated those same gameplay mechanics.

DK King of Swing was an excellent charming DS platform romp, but it's time for DK to return to the big screen. If it's anything like Warioland: Shake it!, then it'll definitely be good

It's not as visually pleasing as other Wii titles shown this E3 but damn, a new DKC!

One of my favorite SNES game! Who better than Retro to revive it...well maybe Rare but they haven't been too hot lately.

Yellowkoopa said:

At first i thought it would be another stupid DK game, but I saw the rest of the trailer at E3 and thought this one would be great.

OverlordMao said:

I put my pre-order down just yesterday, I am SO excited for this one. Ever since me and my buddy bought DKC1&2 for the VC, we've been all about Donkey Kong Country. However, JUST when I beat DKC2, I heard about DKCR and just couldn't contain my excitement. I'm gonna hazard a 9/10 score guess for when it comes out.

TheKingOfTown said:

Wouldn't anyone be more excited about a new DK 3D platformer? Y'know, a game more like DK64. THAT would make me excited!

PSICOffee said:

I bet king k. rool is behind all of it. I hope they at least have kremlings as enemies. Other classic enemies too.

That tagline "A New Country for Old Friends" is so good I wish I'd thought of it.

There's no question, that out of the (seems like) millions of games with "epic" in it.... this game would be the most deserving of that title. Day 1, no questions. I'm going to play the first threee 100% through to get ready for this.

lex0plex said:

this game looks awesome! my gf is a big fan of the original, but it sucked cause alternating co-op is boring so I never played with her. This looks so much much fun for 2 player co-op! she's going to totally kick my ass though...

and the graphics look absolutely EPIC

OverlordMao said:

I hope there's a competitive co-op mode like in the originals, but if not, regular co-op (without switching) is very much appreciated

SkullMan said:

I passed on every game of DK's that involved some dumb controller aka bongos. I want an old school platformer/side scroller. Thank the lord they are returning the to DKC formula that worked so well. DK deserves much better and he's getting it.

There better be swimming levels in it...or it won't capture the same magic.

Neko_Ichigofan said:

This game looks like its quite a bit different than the old DKC games
which IMO is good since I don't like feeling that been here done that feeling I got with New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

November 21st I know where I will be...glued to my TV, with wiimote and banana in hand.

HanuKwanzMasBif said:

@dan674 I actually heard that the pixel count was supposed to be higher than Other M. It might not match up with Brawl's, but still, it'll be something good. Go DK!

darthmix said:

Kinda surprised by how excited I am for this.

It probably helps that Retro is the one doing it.

Punny said:

This game is amazing! Retro really out-did themselves with this game! This game is beautiful, has nostalgic music, and has gameplay that tops the original Donkey Kong Country games! Plus, it's the challenging game I needed after playing some easier games. Definately pick this one up!

JGMR said:

It's already out over here. Actually, i've got myself a copy today.

amh said:

Cleared it in one week. Its a real awesome game. Although i think it shold have more challenging levels.

razzystar678 said:

I had a really good time playing Donkey Kong Country Returns! The levels were hard, but everything else was perfect. The music, the colors, game-play...I had a vision back in 1994, of this game being the improved Donkey Kong Country of the future.
