Hi Everyone, I am pretty new to this site and I'm not really sure where I should be posting this, so I apologise if it is in the wrong area.
Anyway, I have recently become a fan of VC and WiiWare and as a result, I'm running out of free blocks. I have done a little searching but haven't been able to find answers on what the maximum size for a sd card is. Does anyone have any idea? Furthermore, can anyone recommend a good size sd card, I'm not sure what will be too big or too small. I plan on getting about 4000-6000 points worth of product over the next month.
I have a Sandisk 2GB SD card and it holds plenty of games with VC and Wii Ware combined I have over 100 games with almost 9000 blocks left. The 2GB SD card was pretty cheap too. Anyway I have seen SD cards as high as 4GB
Tony, you sure yours is a 2GB card? I've got one of those and it has around 8,000 blocks when empty, so I don't see how yours can have 9,000 blocks left when you've got so many games.
The largest SD card you can use for your Wii is a 32GB SDHC card, though in reality you'll be able to store more than enough with a 2GB SD card. If you're big on WiiWare, though, best to have a 4GB SD card to be on the safe side. I assume a 4GB card will give you around 16,000 blocks, but I can't say for certain.
A 2GB SD Card is an affordable memory card that can hold over 16,000 blocks. But the Wii can accept SDHC cards to as much as 32GB of memory, which would cost around $90 to get for the 32GB, but 2-8GB would be sufficent in my opinion.

Yes its 2GB because I had to redownload everything from my 1GB to my 2GB. Also a great point to bring up is if you play mostly VC games a 2GB will be more than enough but if you buy almost every Wii Ware title you could fill up a 2GB since many Wii Ware titles can be 250- 300 blocks in size.
I've got a 2GB in my Japanese Wii which is starting it's 6th page and I've got loads of free blocks. There's a 4GB in my UK Wii that I doubt I'll ever fill and a 2GB mini-SD in an adapter that came from my old phone for the NA Wii which I will also probably never fill!
really that is good to know because someday i plan to go mad crazy on vc and wiiware downloads now i just have to wait till theres a cheap a$$ deal on those sd cards then.
The limit for Wiiware and VC games is 40mb, and most VC games are less than this so a 2GB card should be more than enough, I would say there is no need to get a SD card larger than this if you are using it solely for Wiiware/VC downloads.
The drawback to cards over 2 GB is that older disc games which have the capability to save stuff to SD cards (for example, Animal Crossing saving photos to SD) can only save to 2 GB or smaller cards. Why? Because of how Nintendo designed the system software. Old software continues to use the old interfaces. And the old interfaces don't support cards over 2 GB. Brain dead? I think so. Hopefully they'll rethink their design for the next console.
More only becomes necessary if you get into a lot of homebrew.
Or if you buy a ton of DLC for games like Guitar Hero or Rock Band. But if you have enough dough to buy a zillion tracks, you've got enough dough to buy more than one SD card.
I have a 16gb one I got at Walmart for $39.99. I have aproximately the following number of games in it: 30 Wiiware, 35 VC and 1 VC Arcade. I also have the Smash Hits Imported Songs, 15 GH WT DLC songs and the 20 Free DLC songs for Rockband 2.
You get about15,000 blocks for every 2 GBs of Memory, so I had 120,000 blocks of memory upon purchase and right now I have 80,000 free blocks which SHOULD be enough for the rest of my purchases. As has been said, the problem with using SDHC (High Capacity) cards is that older games will not recognize them so you can't playback music from the in games such as Excite Trucks and Endless Ocean.
Other than that, 16 GB for $39.99 is the way to go.
