Wow, they gave it a 7! I wasn't too crazy about this game when I first saw it but maybe it's actually worth a try. I think that I'll wait for the Nintendo Life review just to be sure.

I'd like to know more about it too. From what I've seen it looks like a poor man's Darwinia...

Well Nlife gave it a 6. A little buggy but this game looks like it could really appeal to me.

MONSTECA CORRAL gets better and better. I really feel the 26 months of work you've put into it. It's very polished.
The graphics are quirky and they fit very well - remind me of Doshin the Giant.
They're very clean: even when the island is totally zoomed out it's not like in other games where it's a messy pulp at some specific point.
The presentation, the title screen, the tutorial and especially the level selection is just wonderful for a 500pts game. I like how every of the 20 stages is different from each other: The first stage is a sunny tropical island, the second stage already gives a different feeling, making it rather cold and foggy and rainy.. the third stage is a forest, the fourth is a mountain/swamp stage... there's so much variation. And the stage design is clever (if you go for all 6 missions in every stage). And yes, the world is vivid with all those weird robots that terraform the ground, and the floating bubbles everywhere, that giant astromaggot beast, the lazy stompies, and the flying bird thing and robocopters. And the framerate is very smooth. No slowdown yet. I love the calm and peaceful interactive music, very soothing. All in all the game has a very dense atmosphere. Now about the controls: The camera controls with the Nunchuk are perfect. The beasts control fast and fluid. Only jumping needs some practice, but that's not needed anyway. I already like this game. It's very qualitative. I really wonder about the low price. How can this be 500pts? I bought some similiar games for double the price, and they had worse graphics and music, were full of bugs, and had less content. This actually feels like a 1000pts game. I always look out for good strategy/simulation games on WiiWare and this game made me really happy after wasting money on rushed software like Lead the Meerkats, Sandy Beach and Robocalypse.

Edit: Another miracle is that this game is just a mere 124 blocks.

Thanks SKTTR it makes it all worthwhile. We have put so much work into the game. As far as we know it will never drop a frame and run at 60 fps all the time. It was one of the guiding principles of the design as is the low block usage. Also no loading times ...
A few people have said how can a 500 pt game be any good but we really want as many people as possible to play the game. Those Stompies need rescuing and someone has got to do it.

I was on the fence about getting this game but SKTTR's impressions have convinced me to give this game a try. I'm going to download it right now and I'll try to post some impressions of my own later on.

I completed all missions on the first 6 stages now and I'm willing to give this game a 9/10. I'm hooked.
I only move on to the next stage when I won all 6 missions/achievements/sidequests of a stage.

I encountered new beasts like the long-armed, long-legged brown abomination. It looks creepy. Each level brings something new. I just beat the factory on a hill stage. All the elements fit very well. Do the various builidings actually have different effects? I know the prisons are for monsters captured by robots, and it seems the landing pad is for the helirobot to fuel up. are there more special buildings?

I just realised that the monster flying on the bird is actually the player. The one who shouts out the commands. The one who controls the cursor.
There's love for detail in this game, that's for sure.

Well, for the first time now I can select specific monsters and part them up. I can only stress saying the controls are easy and responsive!!
Hold Plus and place the cursor over the monsters you want to select. Press Minus to switch between the two groups. Easy.
Controls are the most important factor in games, it makes or breaks a game, but in Monsteca Corral they work out very well.

I also like how you can stop camera movement (like in Super Mario 64) You can still give commands but the camera is in a fixed position.

@stompy: After surfing Onteca's website I found out that there's another Monsteca game out there on iPhone. It looks completely different than the WiiWare game. A 2D puzzle game? ...spinoff? ...prequel? I'm just very curious about the Monsteca franchise now. Any plans for this coming to WiiWare too? Usually I hate iPhone ports (they're mostly bad) but under these circumstances I'd like to try your other games too (but I'm not interested in buying iPhone hardware) And what are your future plans for WiiWare? Can we expect more original unique quality games from Onteca in the future?

Enough talking. Back to play stage 7 and then some sleep.

This game looked great from the start, I was very shocked at the 500 point Price Tag, I think you could of sold it for 1500, It would be worth it!

SKTTR - thanks for giving us your perspective on this game. Did you have any trouble getting the maggot to take away the stompies at the end of the level? The NL reviewer mentioned having some frustrating experiences with the maggot.

chiwii

SKTTR

@chiwii: No, no problems.

At the end of a level the Astromaggot slowly comes out of the earth (a big blue circling light shows where it emerges). So get near it.
All you have to do is placing your Stompies underneath it, so the silkropes that are hanging underneath the maggot are in reach for the Stompies.
Run back and forth a bit, so every Stompie finds a place to cling on.
If you have trouble, move the cam with the Nunchuck a little to get a straight perspective and zoom-in - makes it easier.

The maggot then slowly floats a little higher and leaves the island and travels with all Stompies on it to the next island (next stage).
If for some reason (too slow) you can't get all your Stompies cling on the Astromaggot, you still have a chance to cling onto it when it's high in the air:
Jumping. (The best way of doing a jump is holding the Wiimote upwards and swing it down. This is the normal forward high jump - but the in-game tutorial explains it all.) It's second nature once you get the hang of it.

As long as the Astromaggot hasn't left the island (playing area) you can grab on to it with jumps.

Thanks for the info SKTTR! I'm really considering getting this one.

The game looks neat. I would like to try it but don't know f I would want to throw 500 points at it.
