Topic: Citadale seems to plagiarise Castlevania?

Woah, the original creators of the game, Ezekiel Rage, made sure they take something from every Castlevania game possible. That's probably a lot of pixel art and sound effects to redesign. Good luck, NitrolicGames, KONAMI's probably on your back now!!

It is fitting that this discussion occurs today because we're having another discussion about eShop games on another page and you can really see the two sides of the moon. On one side there's a developer whose practices are legal, yet lazy and totally devoid of effort, and people insist on defending his right to produce those games. On this side, we have a product that's not entirely legal but at least shows some effort and some care to produce something good - and it gets scrutinized to check how many pounds of pixels have been lifted.

I know that supporting a game with not-entirely-original graphics means devaluing the games that do use original graphics but at this point who cares?! The eShop is filled with games that are not even good enough to be on a pocket calculator from the late '70s - as a user, I'd rather have a game entirely made of stolen graphics than a game where you are a square and you have to avoid other squares.

I mean, if the game sold as much as Flappy Birds I could see the problem, but as it stands I don't. And it looks like something I can see myself playing.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

@spizzamarozzi - Please, for the love of all that is holy, let it go! You're only embarassing yourself even more. It's like you live on another planet, where criticism is promotion, reviews exist to slander and censor, and now apparently theft is justified, yet making a mediocre game is a capital offense. Just chill out. It's not worth it. If you really think these games don't deserve attention, then don't give them attention. Make a mental note to ignore them, and possibly its developers if they've proven consistant, then move on.

And before you say anything: This game does deserve attention. Because it is breaking the law, and the only way its makers will be punished is if it filters through the proper channels. Evil lurks in the darkness, as they say...

@CanisWolfred dude it's incredibly rude to tell people who are pacifically explaining their point to "chill out", "step back", "move on" or "let it go" as if their opinions were worthless. What pedestal are you talking from anyway?! This is the second time in 48 hours. I have nothing against you personally but it's the second instance that I'm expressing my views against something and you are expressing your views against me. If you do it again within the next 24 hours I will be forced to call the videogame police.

You both! Love and kiss each other! On Wii U chat! Now!

I understand both your points, the art ethic side and the business ethic side!

If you want to point fingers at someone, let us three-finger-strike at Ezekiel Rage who obviously never told NitrolicGames that many of the audiovisual assets are ripped material owned by Konami.

Ezekiel Rage didn't ask Konami, but copied graphics and sounds from their legal property anyway, to make a game out of it to sell officially, and made a deal with a Wii U developer to port this over for release on a Nintendo console, where people still remember all the games the assets were ripped off. The plan hasn't worked out, and EarthboundBenjy is our whistleblower hero who gathered explicit information and evidence about this case!

I think such immature behaviour, tricking business partners by not giving out important information (and lacking skills and creativity in creating own pixel art graphics) speaks volumes about this "dev".

Now, what I would like to know is, if EzekielRage's and NitrolicGames' second collaboration "Rorrim" (which is coming to Wii U eShop this week) has similar problems.

No, the only problem Rorrim has (besides its stupid name) is that it's a rediculously generic puzzle-action game, the same kind that's been done to death since the Atari 2600 days...

In fact, that Ezekiel has a comic book anthology, a music collab video, some Death Metal music (I'm assuming, they sound like every Death Metal song ever, at least), as well as a bunch of other games of various genres....all of which run the gambit of genres, but never manage to stand out in any way. Everything comes across as paint by numbers, that the idea of him literally stealing assets does not surprise me at all now that I have context. For a while, I was beginning to wonder whether or not he was actually human, or just an automated media production machine with its own web portal...but the reality may be far more sad...

Well if they need to take it down, it will only benefit the creator.... You know, people running to the store to buy the doomed game.

Then they can "fix" the graphics and make a triumphant return.

Maybe its part of their business plan.

You sound like those conservatives I always hear going on about "false-flag operations." Not that your that, but the concept reminds me of that. A "false-flag release date," haha.

Anyway, this game looks so incredibly slow that I'm not sure any phoenix will rise from its ashes.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

@Haru17 I don't think you know what a "false-flag operation" means. Not that it matters, this is just another "The Producers"-level scam, where they make money by producing something with as little effort as possible, and try to make bank before its condemned. @CanisWolfred I don't think anyone who uses the term knows what it means, though I understand it enough to know that it's mostly used in the realm of conspiracy theorists. Point is, no one actually makes the big, elaborate plans people ascribe to them. It's just happenstance, especially in pop culture.

Well, I can't argue there.

I'll say something on topic. I still haven't gotten around to playing Citadale, but I was browsing the Miiverse community for this game, and somebody posted this screenshot:

Yeah, that graphic is from Circle of the Moon. I can't be bothered to post a screenshot right now, but I recognised it immediately as the Death Mantis found in the Underground Gallery, if anyone cares to look it up.

Oh never mind, I'll look it up for you.
here's the Castlevania Wikia page for the mantis: http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Death_Mantis

Just saying, contrary to what the publisher said earlier in the thread, it's not just a few graphics. It's pretty much everything.

Is it true this game also plagiarises the wonderful song "Citadel" by The Rolling Stones from the album Their Satanic Majesties Request, an LP which incidentally plagiarises The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band?!

I think this bit
Untitled

was actually taken from the song's lyrics "In the streets are many walls".
I can see more than one wall in that street, which is bloody suspicious if you ask me.

How does the fact that Konami is awful affect all of this? Is this better than if it was stolen from an IP owned by a less awful company?

I've genuinely been thinking about this.

I mean, that does help for me but at the same time, it is unlikely they would consider themselves above stealing from elsewhere too. I mean, he is not Robin Hood, stealing from the rich to give to the poor. It's some indie dev that stole from the video games he is inspired by in order to make some money.

...so do I have to put "allegedly" into my post? I don't know how this work.

hmmm...
